From a view of a perspective new fan riding for Peterborough Glasgow, and then being used by both play off sides Ipswich in the semi and Sheffield in the final against Ipswich doesnt exactly mirror a serious sport, even though we are used to it. With all Man Utds injuries perhaps we could use Van Dyke as a guest for Martinez:)

Totally agree speedway fans are used to it, but does it hinder selling it to a new audience?

Yes it is difficult and if a team loses its top rider theres no other option to the guest system as we dont have a squad system. Where it does look silly is the situation where Harris rode for Ipswich to help them get into the final and now finds himself Riding for Sheffield against them, thats an example i think why the sport is not seen as credible in the eyes of some.

It's easy to do. If the UK had its own staduims and top riders it would be packed each week and no one would care get if Chris Harris was guesting for Sheff in the final.
Its difficult to compare different sports, stock cars for example have the best fastest drivers starting from the rear of the grid, something speedway dabbled with in the sixties handicapping the top riders. Throughout the sports history there have always been cinderella clubs who were never going to be contending. Things like the guest rule most people are critical of it, but if a club loses a number one how else do they replace that scoring power? Fans will always have different opinions about certain aspects of the sport. We could do with some injection of positivity like the return of clubs like Swindon, Coventry, and hopefully Wolves can return.

why we have to go through this at the end of every season i don't understand, if you don't like the rules don't enter the competition, if you do enter it, don't complain about the rules at the end
We all understand the rules im not complaining this season and good luck to Ipswich, but we can all have different opinions soon there wont be many left to enter the Premiership anyway.

6 hours ago, orion said:Not at all..Any one with anyone with any common sense would understand that the Play Offs make the crowds bigger during the season. As it keeps the season alive longer for more sides . thes season would have been over by June otherwise and the staduims would have been empty this has to be explain every year to people for some reason Non speedway fans.? Loads of sports used the same format to decide the champions so pretty easy to understand. What you don't understand is that football is awash with money and have so much prize money and things to play for like champions league etc.So they have the luxury of not having to decide the champions by play offs etc
I totally understand all the pros and cons, but as the regular league matches are run with crowds far less than the play off meetings it could be a case of what you lose on the swings you gain on the roundabouts, unless you dont make the play offs so dont have those two or four beneficial meetings at the end of the season. I think i get the gist that football is awash with money but eventually that will create its own problems as we saw with the fans revolt that scuppered the super league, that will eventually come in by way of the restructure of the champions league, which many fans groups are against. Football is now a business more than a sport except for the lower levels where the money is more scarce. Ice hockey is another sport that decides its champons by the way of play offs but also recognises the efforts of the table toppers too. Whatever the format there are always going to be teams with nothing to play for and their seasons will be over half way through, Kings Lynn suffered this year no doubt so will the Luton Towns. The sad fact is clubs continue to fall by the wayside in alarming numbers, we really need to attract those non speedway fans, first we need a sport that is credible, so much of the sport isnt any more when you throw in other aspects not least making the rules up as you go along.

Very true but does this contribute to woeful attendences throughout the regular season and good crowds for a coupe of play off matches for four teams? The season itself is now nothing but a large qualifying round. Bit different to football where at the end of the season the champions and relegated teams are sorted and they have play off for the final promotion place. Can still get a team finishing third in the championship losing promotion to a team that finished quite a few points below them but the important positions of champions and relegation are straight forward. Play offs are just a money spinner, after they were brought in to re structure the football league that became apparent to the authorities. I know people who dont attend meetings throughout the season but just watch the play off meetings whoever is in them. The rule is the rule and thats the same for every club, explaining to a non speedway fan how a team 10 points behind the table toppers can be crowned champions wont encourage them to see speedway as a serious sport. Last season for me yes we won the play offs but it just seemed a bit hollow as we wer,nt the best team over the season. And with a league of half a dozen or seven its even more ridiculous. But as you say everyone understands how it works. Poland is different as the fans there are fanatical and they have all the worlds best riding there, still dont agree with a 6th placed team being crowned champions though. We all have different opinions though.

Looks like Sheffield will make the final again, so I will sit on the fence and just enjoy what I hope is a final just as good and intense as last season. How ironic would it be if R Lambert who helped Belle Vue win it in 2022 against Sheffield , then helped Sheffield in 2023.
Would certainly be no compaints from Qwlerton this time

Totally agree, and yes Hull was a terrible track, i remember going there for one meeting and Belle Vue refused to ride and walked out, the home riders rode round on their own for a walk over, but as you say no one wants to see any track close.

3 hours ago, noggin said:Belle Vue had a crap track for years.
Kirky Lane was ok when first moved in but went downhill from then on, including the state of the grandstand, the top riders got round it well enough even avoiding the bricks on the 4th bend. It did its job saving the club though.

One question could there be any possibility of Wolves running at Birmingham in the short term whilst looking for a site to develop?

2 hours ago, Wolfie456 said:Yes they have conveniently forgot about that place and how they rode inside a dog track and bore us now with this holier than though attitude to everyone else.
Think thats unfair tbh most of the posts on here about our track have come from fans of other clubs

You have to give credit where its due, going down by 4 on the night and 22 on aggregate did for us but you have to give Ipswich credit.

3 hours ago, Aries said:You have to tip your hat to Jason Doyle whether you like him or not. As Hawkins said last night, he’s struggled for set ups and speed in every visit there this year, and didn’t look as quick as others last night either and looked a bit vulnerable even when in front. But when the pressure was on he just wasn’t going to be denied was he? Pure guts, effort and determination not to be beaten when it really mattered. When Kurtz and Bewely briefly hit the front around there like they did here, think we all felt that was that. When they get in front they normally disappear in to the distance but Doyle was having none of it! Very intelligent riding too, cutting across and stopping the runs from the Ace’s pair at just the right times. Superb.
Doyle really showed his experience in that last heat, disappointing for us but you have to hold your hands up he rode a great race, no surpise really hes a class act.

3 hours ago, foreverblue said:I agree entirely with your comments, the racing last night was terrific and heat 15 amazing although you may have a different viewpoint as it was disappointing from a Belle Vue perspective.
We have always had very diverse tracks in this country from the larger faster tracks like Peterborough and Kings Lynn to the smaller tracks like Monmore. As I have said many times there are many that have always criticised Monmore but it will be missed and last night looked very entertaining, personally it is a track I always enjoyed visiting when Poole were in the top league and I don't really see the point of slagging off certain tracks, Leicester have had their detractors in the past and so have my own team Poole.
Totally correct, in the seventies when we had 18 teams in the league it was always said to be world champion you had to ride in the UK due to the variations of track. We had Hyde road, Monmore, Somerton park, for example, the latter was often like a ploughed field but riders could handle it, Wimbledon another small track, no one was critical of any track in those days. As for your own team ive been down to Poole many times and never really seen a bad meeting to be fair.

Not seen any gloating from BV fans on here tonight, a lot of the track comments do actually come from fans of other teams. Whats more concerning considering the state of the sport is at the rate its going will we have enough teams to have any sort of meaningful league next season? No point having a new stadium if theres no opposition. Kirky lane wasnt good but did its job it was better than no speedway, i never really understood the critisism of Monmore from fans around the country. Its now going to be missed isnt it? Hope they can quickly get a new home along with Peterborough.

Congratulations to the Witches, 18 was a big ask and then falling 22 behind made it an impossible task that we nearly pulled off. Pity yet another injury hit us at play off time but the performance at Ipswich and the first four heats tonight did for us. Overall Ipswich did the job and i hope they go onto win it, Doyley and Emil really are two top quality riders enjoy watching them both. Good racing and a good advert for the sport. Good Luck Witches

I'd be looking at him for next year. In my opinion he's in the Tungate, Bjerre and Lydsey mould so likely to score well.
Riding when not fit just hinders the team but Norick has been hit and miss this season.

Some were saying we should have rode with two juniors last season

I dont think this is over, we were 22 points down after four heats in our second leg and took it to the last heat, Riss Rew and the witches reserves could find the going tough at Owlerton, Emil, Doyley, and King are going to need some backing. If reports Doyle is having check ups and could miss the second leg are true that could be pivotal, hope hes ok. Sheffield will certainly be a far tougher proposition and could pull this back if unlike us they get off to a good start.
