  1. I just had the feeling with Tai that after winning the world title he felt compelled to ride in the EL to promote the sport as world champion, if he hadnt won the title i had the feeling he would have followed Holder and given the UK a miss, probably understandable when you look at the schedules of todays top riders. With Woffinden only scoring 4 points we really should have taken all the points but again Worrall and Cook were disappointing.

  2.

To put Morris back 15m would've been to invent a rule that isn't there, similarly to introduce a reserve, the exclusion of Morris did make the Final an anti-climax but the referee had to make a decision one way or the other, which he did and IMO rightly exclude Morris.

True there is no rule that is in place at the moment but given all the responses on this thread could an introduction of said rule come in to play in future seasons so to eliminate a problem that many people appear to have an issue with? We have seen far more ridiculous rules introduced over the years.

  3. I didnt see the meeting so cant comment on the rights and wrongs of the exclusion. Going with the football comparison we have seen instances where players have missed finals after a yellow card in the semis, Roy Keane missing the champions league final after recieving a yellow Against Juventus for example. But in that case the squad is utilised and a replacement player is brought into the team, albeit a lesser player. That isnt available in speedway and in the case of the pairs the final was over before tapes up. So given the referee cant overlook an exclusion just to give the fans a race would it not be possible for example to have put Morris off 15 meters? Or perhaps have a reserve rider who can be used in the case of exclusions to at least put four riders in a race and avert instances like Friday? Just a thought.

  4. Again a great event and a great atmosphere what was lacking though was good racing, for a showcase event the main ingredient failed to deliver, far too processional. Earlier in the week on talksport one of the presenters was commenting on the speedway gp and stated whats the point, whoever is in front going into the first bend will win, last night did nothing to disprove his arguement. I also thought the fan zone wasnt as good as in previous seasons, far too cramped up in the wood street. Gutted Tai didnt finish the night on top of the podium but the important thing is he finished the night leading by three points, hes looking good and hopefully he can nail back to back titles.

How is this a better comparison when all you are doing is agreeing with my point, which is at the moment Birmingham cannot continue speedway when there overheads outweigh the income. Where as if they had a 500 people turning up to watch speedway at facility like Buxton, then the Birmingham support could finance speedway.

Maybe Birmingham’s problem has been showing some ambition, since 2007 there's has hardly been a year when they haven’t been in the play off’s or made a cup final.

Belle Vue might have it right by never offering any sign of ambition. That way their fans get use to it and turn up regardless and all credit to their fans for doing so. But honestly how can you take a sport seriously when a team is allowed to finish bottom of the table 3 times in 6 seasons but is still allowed to stay in the Elite league of that sport.

As for Perry Barr, Ommer um was pretty close with what he had to say, Birmingham fans might not like that it, but that’s the way it is.

Because the brummies are not in a facility like buxton and are riding at el level instead of nl, so the comparison is irrelevant, a more true comparison is with clubs with similar overheads and similar outgoings at the el level, if Birmingham were nl then yes they could sustain it. As Birmingham has lost the sport for many years it says something that there is not enough public support for the sport to thrive, as for Belle Vue showing no ambition well apart from an unbroken continuous run of speedway going back to 1928 there is the new stadium to look forward to and a better future, if that means weve had to sacrifice the past half dozen seasons to cut our cloth accordingly then so be it, its a better road to take than to throw money at it for a quick fix of success that ends in the club possibly being lost forever. And despite our wooden spoons we are still here and that is a club that has had a long history of success over its long lifespan.

Birmingham has the support to support speedway look at Buxton how many fans do they get. What Birmingham doesn’t have is the support to carry massive overheads..

So perhaps Birmingham would be better off in the NL at a level they could afford, the Brummies aren't the only club with said overheads, we too race in a GRA stadium but have not got into this much of a financial mess, Theres been a lot in the speedway press from the Brummies promotion lamenting the lack of people coming through the turnstiles, that would indicate the city does not have the support in sufficient numbers, BV or Wolves would be a better comparison than buxton as those clubs pay rent and overheads in rented stadia and race at EL level

  7. sad to see any club fold but if after a gap of many years without speedway the city of Birmingham cant support a speedway team talk about a stadium at a different site is pointless really as without support the business would not be viable wherever it may be raced. I hope the brummies can be saved its hard to imagine our second city cant sustain the sport of speedway. tonights meeting does seem somewhat pointless but im going along as due to breaks in the league programme it feels more like the close season with the lack of action. that can also have an adverse effect as people find other things to do and get out of the habit of going. anyway good luck to Birmingham on their bid to survive.

  8. I feel Belle Vue have been the seasons under acheivers thus far. I would have had them nailed on for top 4 with the line-up they had on paper. I guess one or 2 riders have gone backwards instead of the predicted forwards.

That's a good summing up of the season so far, as regards to cook riding abroad he stated at the start of the season the cost of doing so was prohibitive for him. Remaining in the PL is detrimental to his career.

  9. Oh for when shed loads of sawdust was put down on went the overalls and the meeting was raced to its conclusion  Seriously though more and more people will keep their money in their pockets when theres the chance of rain, I myself travelled to all away meetings for years but now considering the costs involved fuel, entrance, food, drink etc don't take the risk, its a difficult one as we want to see racing not riders struggling to control a bike, and then theres the rider safety aspect, but decsisions do appear somewhat inconsistent these days BV v Poole last season for example. Then the powers that be wonder why the support is draining away.

  10. I always remember learning about Tommys sad accident, the Aces were down at Newport and i had got up early to travel and my dad told me there had been a serious accident concerning Tommy, what a shock that was, he was a superb rider, exciting to watch and for me he would probably have gone on to be a world champion, a great rider and a sad passing RIP Tommy Jansson.

  11. Why was Oliver Greenwood riding for Poole? How on earth did Cookie get away with them starts? In my opinion something needs to be done about some EL tracks it is not too far off impossible to pass.

    Zagar certainly shows how to

Win or lose it makes no odds to me I just like to see good speedway. It may or may not have cost Poole the points tonight but my real problem is I just dont like to see a young Brit who could go places getting in to bad habits. If he wants to make it on the international stage he needs to stay still at the start. Refs arent so lenient at international level. He probably needs to get out of the prem and get some rides on the continent as well.

Obviously you have no problems with all your clubs past dodgy dealings then? Seems good speedway goes out the window if your winning?

  12. Cant see any problem with any side having the priority over their own assets at reserve, hopefully when we get the move we will then be able to bring on some good promising local young riders that we ourselves can use, similar to all the talent that came through at Hyde Road, because we are not in that position at the moment dosent mean those that are shouldn't use the assets they've brought on.

  13. Best wishes to Ivan and his family, a few years ago when he attended the BV meeting at Gorton Monastary it appeared he was starting to suffer with this condition. The man is a legend, his professionalism and consistency was absolute top drawer. Today sports people make a big thing of the importance of psycology in attaining their goals, Ivan recognised this many many years ago and had many opponents beaten in the pits before a wheel was turned. Very shrewd and a fantastic influence to all those around him as his record with his various teams show. The early seventies BV team was a powerhouse unit and that was in no small part to Ivan Maugers influence, it was a privilege to have seen him in his prime.

  14. AND, as it happens, the last attendance at Odsal for a World Final was in fact less than 20,000.

Wembley World Final attendances were invariably put at 100,000 because that was the stadium's alleged capacity and it sounded good but few if any actually achieved that level and the one in 1981 was way below that. Different era, of course, and as BWitcher so rightly points out the number of people regularly attending speedway in the UK 30 years ago was significantly higher than today.

Without the GPs and Cardiff what major World Championship event do people think would take place in Britain now? Even if there was a one-off World Final the likelihood of it being staged here in anything more than every five or six years would be minimal.

Because the product was far better than it is today, even though 30 years ago not everything in the garden was rosy the sport held more appeal, even today people I work with can name Mauger, Briggs, Collins etc, ask them who is world champion today and no one knows and that with a british world champion. The sport needs to find a way of reconnecting with the wider public, silly rules like the double tac and joker have the opposite effect likening speedway more to its a knock out. We can debate forever but the one fact that is beyond discussion is the terraces around the tracks today very sparesly populated, TV was seen as the big breakthnrough its not happened, hopefully it will this season.

No meeting in Britain has ever attracted 6 figures. A few times into 90,000s

We can only go off figures quoted at the time and none of us know for sure the exact figures but one thing is certain Wembley for instance was never raced in a half full stadium well not the times I attended, even take 80,000 and nowadays the flagship event is under half that

  15. SO you are saying that those riders who boycott the UK do so because of the GPs? Nothing to do with the money on offer in Poland and, to a lesser extent, Sweden and elsewhere. Not that many riders simply do not wish to commute to the UK to race when there is plenty of alternative employment.

Riders like Bjerre, Iversen, Ward, Woffinden, and Zagar prove that if the mind is willing the GPs do not stand in the way of the top riders racing here.

Don't accept that the annual crowd at Cardiff is on a downward spiral and, frankly, the attendance is quite impressive given that it is probably about the same figure, if not higher, than the number of people who attend speedway in the UK on a regular basis.

That's five out of the sixteen GP riders, riders themselves have actually stated they would ride in the EL if it wasn't for the amount of league matches considering their schedule as regards to the GP so I would say it does have some effect, likewise the falling crowds for league meetings prove that television exposure is not having the desired effect on the sport that some thought it would, as for Cardiff released figures have shown a drop off on attendances from the first time the event was staged, for a one off meeting in a state of the art stadium with all the worlds top riders I don't think under 40,000 is impressive at all, a half full stadium when you take into consideration the attendance is made up of every team in the country be it EL,PL,NL, a far cry from when these kind of meetings were into six figures, apart from disrupting the bread and butter of league the GP hasn't really made that much impact at all with the wider general public, in fact the sport is losing support.
