  1. If 3 clubs came up, not sure where the riders would come from. It was difficult for some teams to get a competitive side this season. If Somerset came up, Swindon would lose likely riders as they are Somerset assets & with 3 clubs coming up, less riders to double up!

Which of the Swindon riders were owned by Somerset?

  2. There's been talk of a a whole host of sides potentially moving up to the EL, if only half of them are true, it does leave the PL looking rather vulnerable with concerns (of varying degrees) over the viability of other clubs being added into the mix.

Are there any NL teams likely to make the move up to PL?

  3. Depends if Britain keep the top riders.

The talk is now they are using PL assessed averages for next season (seems a bit weird) then riders like Doyle and Iversen clearly won't fit or be in the plans just like the other GP riders or the like.

I believe the top riders like Doyle will still be 'allowed' to ride in the UK, it would just be on very high averages, something like 14.00.

  4. It was very poor taste, no doubt. The worst of it all, is that it was 100% totally pointless.

There have been other situations in the past; Loram/Screen as mentioned before, but the one that sticks out for me is Vojens '96 - again involving the yanks! Without that interference, I am convinced Nielsen would have been world champion.

Whilst you could never ever condone such actions, there was a world title at stake.

But Hancock was well, words fail me.

I don't know the ins and outs of the rule book, but would love it if there was an option of docking points being added in the future to try and prevent such instances happening again. It may just make a few of these guys think.

  5. So if we use converted averages we will have this crazy scenario. Bates averaged 4.76 for Coventry while Sarjeant averaged 3.81 in the EL. Converting PL averages Sarjeant would have a higher average than Bates for the 2017 EL season. How can that be right?

There are some riders who perform better in PL opposed to EL (Sarjeant, Nielsen), and others who perform better in EL as opposed to PL (Bates, Newman). There are always going to be quirks.

If you want to create a fair average/grading list, you'd probably have to take both leagues into account.

It's just amusing how so many people jump on Newman's back simply because he rides for Poole, but hardly anything gets said about Bates who is doing practically the same for Coventry. Double standards anyone?

  6.

    Thanks for that.

So the abbreviated accounts for Stoke Speedway (Crewsline Ltd) will be equally uninformative?

There don't seem to be any great stashes of money anywhere...........argh!

Stashes of money in regards to clubs or as a sport as a whole?

There is money in the sport, just not a lot in running a speedway club!

  7. prem league was a very good product when points limit was 45

the only difference to the cost is the fees teams agree with there riders

if the points limit is 36 good riders on 5point averages will demand more money than if the points limit was 45

riders on high averages will have to ride for less as there will be plenty wont get a team place so the higher riders will be compeating for team places

45.00 was back when BPs counted towards averages. Even though 45.00 (with BPs) is higher than 40.00 (without BPs) the difference is not as vast as it sounds.

  8. I did look by directors' names as well. If you search for Chris Van Straaten it shows he is a director of Cradley, Redcar and what appears to be his families Steel stockholding business. Absolutely no mention of Wolves. So Wolves may trade a sole trader or partnership (both highly unlikely) and therefore do not have to file accounts at Companies House. Alternatively as MrMungo says they could trade as ABC Limited and have directors not known to speedway circles. This makes it very difficult to trace.

The aforementioned "Families Steel stockholding business" has "93199 - Other Sport Activities" listed as the nature of the business, which is interesting....

  9.

So what about the clubs that don't appear in this helpful list?

Is there no legal requirement for them to file accounts or are they operating on some kind of sole trader basis?

I would be really interested to find out a bit more about the mysterious world of speedway finance.

    :o

All clubs will have to file Accounts, but their trading name is not always obvious.

Plymouth, for example, trade(d) as Peninsula Promotions Ltd, which isn't exaclty the first name you would expect.

Others may form a similar pattern.

The information is out there though, just may take a bit of time to find it in some cases.

  10. Unfortunately you cannot tell who is making a profit or not as published limited company accounts can be submitted to Companies House in an abbreviated format that does not require a profit and loss account to be submitted. However the abbreviated accounts do contain a balance sheet that does contain relevant information.

When reading a balance sheet the net worth which is Total asset minus Total liabilities is the indicator of the solvency of the company. If the net worth is a negative value then the company is technically insolvent. However it may still continue to trade under the behest of its creditors.

I have looked through Companies House records and have found information on the following speedway clubs:

    Date Company Accounts Net Setup Date Worth £ Belle Vue Mar-12 Mar-15 (£38,631) Berwick Dec-08 Dec-15 (£151,266) Birmingham Mar-15 Dec-15 £37,166 BMR (Rye) Mar-14 Dec-15 £100 Coventry Nov-11 Nov-15 (£25,591) Eastbourne (old) Dec-37 Dec-15 £676,608 Eastbourne (new) Jan-15 Jan-16 No a/cs yet Edinburgh Jan-86 Dec-14 (£172,962) Glasgow Sep-12 Nov-15 (£152,016) Cradley Nov-12 Nov-15 (£23,063) Ipswich Mar-89 Feb-16 £1,510 IOW (old) Dec-97 Feb-15 (£105,595) IOW (new) Jun-16 Jun-17 No a/cs yet Kent Jan-13 Jan-15 £996 Kings Lynn (old) Mar-15 Mar-15 £78,896 Kings Lynn (new) Feb-16 Feb-17 No a/cs yet Leicester Aug-09 Oct-14 £565,000 Poole May-02 Feb-16 £101,625 Somerset Feb-11 Feb-15 (£44,821) Swindon Sep-13 Nov-15 (£23,227) Redcar Dec-05 Feb-16

    (£140,437)

My last post does not read easily, but you can see that in the main UK speedway is being financially propped up by the promoters personally, or by a company they are involved in outside of the sport.

There is however one UK company that is doing rather well out of speedway and due to its size has to publish full accounts. Its Turnover for year ending December 2015 was £7,850,975, net profit before tax was £1,492,161 and the Net Worth was £5,652,682.

Any guesses which company this is?

  11. Someone like a Matt forde who runs it as his business not a play thing, you might not like pooles way of working but I'd have him at my club in a heart beat and he would make a success of it .i wonder if he would be interested in a feeder club for Poole you never no somewhere where he could keep an eye on his assets.

That was an option earlier on in the year until Plymouth was saved back in April.

  12. Exactly why i havnt wanted him at Plymouth for the last 3 years. Too inconsistent and hasnt improved in PL the last 2 years. I wouldnt suggest that he is being paid to drop points but he doesnt ride with the same passion and determination for plymouth as he does for poole. Saw him at wimborne road for the wolves play off meeting and he rode out of his skin but dont see the same sort of fight at the SBA and it drives me mad that he rarely looks for his team partner in either league!

I would suggest that is because he is riding for his local club at Poole. There are some riders who just perform that bit better, able to find that extra 5%, when riding for their local club.

There has certainly never been a lack of effort as far as his efforts for Plymouth are concerned; not from what I have seen at least.

It's worth remembering that Newman has never been a number 1 in the PL. I think his highest average has been around 7. It just so happens he's able to find his best form for Poole. If it was any other club in the country, most people wouldn't give a rat's ass!

  13. Most people I know who voted out including myself wanted to stay into a reformed Europe. Like the BSPA, Europe stated it was our way of the high way so guess what....?

Those of you who are bashing the leave campaign and saying immigration isn't an issue obviously lives in some back water like Ipswich (yes you cookie) where it hasn't had an effect yet, as some of us are forced to live in little Romania were very fed up.

    Ipswich voted to leave.
