That crash with Dryml , in the business is called a butt stretcher. Now those are one of the crashes racers hate the most outside of goin off the high side. Given the choice between the two, personally I would have rather been the other fella with no hands on the handlebars. (the song free ride comes to mind). Anyway, that butt stretchin crash takes the old breath away just watchin it. You can just feel the mans pain watchin him sittin there. Then, havin to get back on for the next race, sittin on that hard seat, all I can say is, these guys are tough, dont kid yer self.

Tears & Glory - The Winged Wheel Story"

Way to go Arnieg.. is there anything cooler than being a published author? I dont think so! Good luck.

dont think Gresh would have gotten the better of Billy. A draw at best, but unlikely.. Billy was tougher than most.

i got his autograph once or twice. anyway, he was good to watch, and sure could get the crowd fired up. i remember one time seein him run across the the center green during the races to use the bathroom in an emergency because he ate some english version of mexican food a few hours before. i think he got excluded under the two minute rule. great stuff.

gresh liked to fight with no helmet on. plus he was very adept at punching somebody sucessfully in the eyes even when wearing a helmet.. he had pretty good aim i reckon..

outside of bein a talented racer, he was a great enforcer for any team when the money was right. funny enough, hear tell he is really a nice fella if ya dont tick him off. and if ya do, ya had to knock him out if ya wanted him to stop beatin ya in to next week. i think he must be part australian..

Reading i believe. heard tell Briggo cold cocked Gresham but it went to the ground with Gresham on top befor it got broken up by about 20 people in the pits. Not takin anything away from Briggo, he was 20 years older and gave a good account of himself and makes us old fellas proud. a man not to be messed about. bet he is still as tough as ever. but.. i hear Gresh got the better of him by an inch..

howz about Steve Gresham and Briggo after Steve brought Tony Briggs down? i heard tell it looked like a cage fighting championship, with Steve gettin the edge in the end due to bein younger..

Shirra head butted (he was wearin his helmet,) Dave (who was not wearin his helmet) and knocked his front tooth or teeth out, which Dave, by all accounts, thought was funny. i mean, in this corner, weighin 9 stone, we have little polite Mitch Shirra.. in the other corner, standin ? weighing ?, Dave Kennett. now havin said that, which one is tougher.. ol short-stack for takin on such a big opponnet or big dave for thinkin it was funny that such a little fella could knock out his front teeth? you decide.

    Issue 25 Coming Soon

I think too here was a man who absolutely had a passion for the sport. He gave a lot years to the sport, and he certainly didnt do it for the money. Always had eally good equiptment and was good with the press and good for his sponsors. He came along when the sport was an extremely tough nut to crack. Look at the depth of the competition he faced trying to reach the top. Did he win a world final, no. but personally i think he should feel very proud of his career.

i think JD, at his peak was certainly a world class racer. he was 100% dedicated, and very patriotic. true he could be a bit hot and cold, but he was fast. remember too that in 77 he severely injured his arm on the safety fence at bristol (its a wonder he didnt cut it off.) as bad as it was others may have retired, but he came back. i think some comments on here are off the mark. he was good for speedway, the sport could use more personalities like him.
