Well Monkford didn't really invent it for use at New Cross as such.He invented it for use at Crystal Palace.Or for the benefit of speedway.But in 1932 i doubt he even thought speedway would be held at New Cross.So it is rather misleading.Not a very well thought out sentence shall we say?What did Mark Twain say about the difference between the right word and the almost right word...?

Well Jeff unlike you I don't have a pre-conceived personal agenda that I'm working to and/or a single, self opinionated point of view of people who at least try to improve speedway. They don't hide behind a keyboard critiquing it, they have the entrepreneurial spirit to aim higher. The tone and content of your reply was exactly what I suspected it would be ... but thought I'd put to the test! Thank you.

PS ... Having been involved in brand marketing and advertising for over 30 years I do have a wee bit of knowledge of what can affect TV ratings and despite the stand point you write from I have seen little evidence of a valid, impartial and credible argument from you on this "catastrophic further collapse"!
Sorry you feel that way George. If you add the telly audience to the attendances figures issued there looks to be a shortfall even allowing for all the mitigating factors you suggest.

Sorry Jeff I remain to be convinced. We are not comparing apples with apples. You cannot ignore the fact that the world cup was on at this time. That has an impact on viewing figures, not only from a perspective of direct competition i.e. simultaneous broadcasting, but time available to watch TV. In other words, "only X amount of sport allowed on the TV in our house today".There would be world cup parties and barbecues. A 5pm start means there is less latent viewers available as 5pm is a time when people could be returning from an afternoon out or getting a meal ready. An evening start means more people are available to watch. The weather in both years is also a factor have you considered this?
More factors need to be considered before a valid and impartial conclusion can be drawn.

Firstly, my article discussed many factors while the comment you quote from the BSF also has a context you're taking it out of &, er, to answer your query:
since the Cardiff SGP rounds in 2009 & 2010 both started at 5pm - the 79,000 shortfall this year is an apples with apples comparison (rather than an exceptional new explanatory circumstance I'd failed to mention as the other gentleman had noted).
Apparently some feel the 104,000 shortfall in 2009 was exceptional circumstance prompted by changing the start time from 7pm to 5pm rather than being any reflection upon the diminishing enthusiasm of the UK television audience (as recorded by BARB). This PoV ignores the trend towards falling audience figures for other SGP rounds (where the start times remained the same) in both 2009 & 2010

The biggest viewing figures for Sky Sports showing Premiership Football usually happen on "Super Sunday" - featuring Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal etc - where kick offs are 1.30 & 4pm

The Cardiff SGP is a sports programme (not, as in your example, a soap like Eastenders) - when Manchester play live on the telly whether it's 1.30, 4 or 8 they get big audiences
Either way, the SGP lost 79,000 viewers from 2009 to 2010 when both were staged at 5pm. So this "very important point" you claim undermines the various points of my article isn't a new (key) factor worth including or, more importantly, the explanation for the decline you seem to think it is

Never said it was solely responsible but it is a major factor on viewing figures ...the main thing is that the piece written fails to point out this very important point and for that reason makes it almost pointless .

I think this is a fair explanation of the difference in figures.
The explanation here is different albeit hard to understand. It also appears to suggest that almost all viewing figures for every speedway meeting ever televised by Sky isn't statistically significant.
Plus the post isn't info that appears on the BARB website
The published BARB figures are the only widely available viewing statistics (in the absence of more detailed info from the organisers)
Looking at the FAQs section of the BARB website (www.barb.co.uk) answers most methodology questions.
Refreshing the audience panel is a regular but standard occurence - if it invaildated statistical comparisons surely telvision companies would soon let BARB know?
