  1. I'm very glad to hear that the Kings Arms are keen to help.

The housing which occupies the Norwich Firs Stadium area has some roads named after riders I understand.

When the only option on a warm summer evening is to visit a supermarket, a housing estate a carpet warehouse or join the teenage population binge drinking in a Club the planners in this country will realise the mistakes that they have made.

I must say that the book of which Mr Potts was a co-Author is one of the very best ever produced about a Speedway Club and very reasonably priced too.

    Malcolm Vasey

I totally agree about the Book Malcolm - it is an EXCELLENT buy. :approve::approve:

I agree too about the 'Kings Arms' they should be applauded. At least THEY have some sense of History. :approve::approve:

Used to love watching 'Crumpie', John Jackson, Gary Flood and Dai Evans at Sunderland. Happy Memories!!!

  2. He certainly hasnt gone to Spain, he is in hertfordshire, but he has not kep any footage other tahn a few world finals and no he wont release them!

I have loads of old screen sport stuff and am spending hours and hours copying them onto dvd before the tapes go ka-put

Is there anything out there involving Sunderland Rob - we have a limited amount of footage - but not a lot.

  3. Courtesy of Crewe TV Blogspot :

"The blog has received news from Mark Potts, one of the authors of When They Were Kings - The Crewe Speedway Story about their plans to create a lasting memory of the speedway team that entertained the town between 1969 and 1975. Mark and others have been in talks with Savills (the company that manages the Grand Junction Retail Park off Earle Street) about the erection of a small plaque on the Allied Carpets building which is built on the pits bend of the old Earle Street stadium. The idea is that the constructor of the track, Colin Tucker, would fly over from New Zealand to unveil the plaque in September later this year. But guess what? The hierarchy at Savills have refused the application and, according to Mark, they have stated that they "don't want their building messed around with." As you can imagine, the lads are not happy and won't be leaving it there! They are already looking at an alternative"

This is shocking - This could have been a GREAT opportunity for Allied Carpets/Savills (not be buying any carpets from them in the future) to get some publicity along with the Speedway. What harm can there be in wanting a small Memorial of times past.

Very best of luck 'Kings' Supporters - hope you are successful in your endeavours. :approve:

  4. Just purchased this book by Rod Haynes which is a good read and includes things I had almost forgotten over the years since. It brought back plenty of things from the seventies when I was a pre teenager. I would recomend it to any old Scunthorpe supporters.

If it was written by Rod Haynes it should be good - I enjoyed his EXCELLENT contributions to BackTrack. :approve::approve::approve:

  5. There appears to be a Youtube jinx on me.

Repeated attempts to register, and then upload the the Briggo mpeg have all ended in failure.

I don't know what the situation is regarding giving out email addresses or phone No.s is on the forum, but IanMartin, I would be quite happy to email an mp3 of the recording to an email address or post a cd.

CD received - Thanx very much. :):):)

    Sent you a PM.

    Hi Keepturningleft

Thank you for your very kind reply - I have sent you a PM. :):):)

  7. In his new book ‘Wembley and Beyond’, Briggo, recalls his appearance on Desert Island Discs.

Barry correctly remembered choosing a song by Ella Fitzgerald, but not one by Elvis.

Well, if Briggo is reading this, I can inform him that his exact choice of discs on the programme was as follows.

    Ravel’s Bolero

And I Love Him(Her) Esther Philips

You ‘Oughta Be In Pictures Ray Conniff & Billy Butterfield

    Manhattan Ella Fitzgerald

    In The Mood Glenn Miller

Strangers In The Night Frank Sinatra

    Laura’s Theme Dr Zhivago

Now Is The Hour ??? Islanders

How do I know all this? Well, as a young speedway mad lad in 1967, I recorded the show onto our ‘state of the art’ Philips tape recorder with a microphone placed in front of our wireless.

The recording has survived over the years as I have repeatedly transferred it onto whatever the latest new recording gizmo was at the time.

If there is any interest, I could upload the recording onto YouTube, if my no longer young lad brain can work out how to do it.

I must admit, as a Briggo Fan, I would love to hear that programme. :approve::approve::approve:

  8. Ron, this is a speedway discussion forum. Therefore we're free to discuss Andy Galvin's situation, which is a topic relating to a former rider. If members of his family are not comfortable with this, then they don't have to come onto this forum - nobody has forced them. It's called free speech. It's as simple as that.

    All the best

    Rob

I disagree in this case Rob. I am a great advocate of 'Freedom of Speech' myself - BUT - thought and consideration should be part of the RIGHT to say what you wish as well. With 'Freedom of Speech' comes the RESPONSIBILITY to try to ensure that no-one is hurt by your remarks. In this case, as I understand it, Andy has not even been Tried yet - whatever happened to the old adage of INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty.

Just my thoughts on this issue..........................

  9. As a Kings Lynn fan it would be interesting to hear a little bit more what Malcolm Simmons thought about Maury Littlechild, he was very popular amongst riders and promoters, but we have never heard much more than he was a good bloke, be interesting to hear a little more. Also Cyril Crane, Malcolm didnt appear to get along with him very well, neither did Dave Jessup it seems, did Simmo ever go to one of Cyril's infamous party's ? What was Cyril really like ?

Kings Lynn were well supported in the seventies, but where were the biggest crowds ? Poole, Belle Vue, were Newport's the worst ?

What was it like when the machinery changed, be interesting to hear Malcolms thought's on JAP,Jawa,Weslake, Godden and GM, he probably rode them all.

Give him time, give him time. I am sure that Malcolm will be covering loads of things in future issues. :approve::approve:

  10. This really is a 'SUPER' Thread - I am learning loads more than I ever knew about European Speedway. I am filled with admiration for some of you guys with your records and everything. Thank you for sharing - it's GREAT. :approve::approve::approve:

  11. Why do you people buy a magazine you so clearly hate ?

For my part i think that all of Retro publications are extremely well written and presented, and are largely unbiased.

I just received a large bundle of books, magazines and DVD's all hastily dispatched for me to Canada at a very reasonable rate.

I cannot speak highly enough of the excellent service i have always received from the people at Backtrack.

They have allowed me to to revisit so many happy experiences from my youth, with interviews and articles from all of the tracks and personalties of the period. Thanks Tony, keep up the good work it is widely appreciated by many people all around the world and around the corner.

I could NOT agree more. I have every issue safely stowed away. I look forward with GREAT anticipation to when the next one is due out and wait for it dropping through my Letter Box. This goes for BOTH BackTrack and Classic by the way. I have relived so many memories through these Magazines it is unreal. Tony and Suzie - PLEASE keep up the good work, standard of production and care for your Customers. Thank you for that. As an aside - the BSPA could learn a lot from yourselves about dealing with the public.

Regarding the Bruce Penhall Articles - I must say that I have not been impressed with him. I thought his first piece was very lightweight and in his second he comes across, to me, as a very bitter man.

Malcolm Simmons however is worth the Cover Price alone for his Articles - I also hope that Rod Haynes reappears - his comments were always worth reading too.

If I had to choose between reading Penhall or Haynes - I would go for Haynes EVERY time.

  12. Nigel

So glad you're taking it in the way it was meant. By the way, I would have liked my name to be Nigel - anything's better than Cedrick!

I get some good laughs on this Forum - thank you for that.:lol::lol: (Sorry about the Smilies)

  13. Don't know if any forumlanders ever go to the bookshops in Hay-on-Wye but its amazing what they have there-I always try to get there when am in UK. Anybody read Enid Blyton stories-new biography of her says she was a real dragon-nasty to her daughters-lots of affairs, had a lesbian affair and played tennis naked-not all at the same time though!!- she's really gone up in my estimation -what a gal. Just so I don't get criticised for going off topic by not mentioning speedway in this post -I will add the following-does anybody know whether Enid was a speedway fan???????

I hope Enid Blyton didn't try naked Speedway. Could be painful.:wink:
