  1. I am really getting fed up with people posting jokes here-like for example. Man at suppertime sitting watching TV, hears wife calling out from kitchen"Darling what would you like for supper tonight , lamb, chicken or beef?". He responds "Thank you dear I'd like a nice piece of lamb because I am going out to speedway later" Wife calls out from kitchen "F**k you, you're getting soup. I was talking to the cat!!"

I'm sorry - I really DID have to laugh at that one.:lol::lol:

  2. Don't know how you can mention High Chaparral without mentioning one of the sexiest women on tv at the time.Big Johns wife and Manolito's sister. She was a cracker. She wasn't in too many scenes, but i always waited for those bits :approve:

And Alias Smith and Jones was also superb tv

She certainly was a good looking Lady - I agree. :approve:

Anyone remember 'Gunslinger' with Tony Young or 'Branded' with Chuck Connors. Wish some Channel would run repeats of these all shows mentioned on here. 'Gunsmoke' and 'Wagon Train' with Ward Bond and Johnny Horton were classics. :approve::approve:

  3. Who wouldn’t. :P:D

Here is one for you lot: An actor that appeared in Western films and that was actually in real life one of America's most highly decorated soldiers. No, not that type cast actor - Marion Morrison, that never saw any kind of real action apart from learning a script.

A real life hero, not the comic book type....

Audie Murphy. He certainly did have a distinguished Service career.

    Awards:

He is authorized the Medal of Honor; Distinguished Service Cross; Silver Star with First Oak Leaf Cluster; Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device and First Oak Leaf Cluster; Purple Heart with Second Oak Leaf Cluster; Legion of Merit; Good Conduct Medal; Distinguished Unit Emblem with First Oak Leaf Cluster; American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one silver service star, three bronze service stars and one bronze service arrowhead; World War II Victory Medal; Combat Infantry Badge; Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar; Expert Badge with Bayonet Bar; French Fourragere in Colors of the Croix de Guerre; French Legion of Honor, Grade of Chevalier; French Croix de Guerre with silver star, and the Belgian Croix de Guerre 1940 with Palm.

And Rebel the Dog - I think. :approve:

  6. Ian

Just a little warning, which you must count to 10 about BUT

I came on thinking this was something to do with Speedway Years Gone By!

Be ready for it to be moved for GENERAL SECTION (non speedway).

Im sure it wont be personal but it may reach a wider audience.

    Now - breathe 2,3,4.

    Cheers Sandie :lol::lol:

Sorry if I have put this in the wrong place everybody. Put it down to age.:rolleyes:

    PS. I'm breathing.

  7. After reading the Thread on What's my Line it got my memory banks working. Takes a lot these days believe me.

It made me wonder if anyone out there remembers the good old days on the Telly with 'Rawhide', 'Wagon Train' and the 'Cisco Kid' etc...................... :):)

    I mourn their passing.

OR - am I just SAD?

  8. ...except that it wasn't Bob Danvers Walker. It was someone called Alec, as I remember.

You are right Ian - Original "gonger": Alec Dane. Original "announcer" - Bob Danvers Walker. :approve::approve::approve:

Oi'll give you "FOIVE" for being right. :approve:

  9. I remember Take Your Pick cos my Dad was in the audience for a show.......................

And correct me if I am wrong but did a Speedway rider appear on They Think Its All Over and if so who was it????????????? Kelvin Tatum rings a bell but it might have been later than his retirement...................

    RP

My goodness 'Take your Pick' with Michael Miles - AND - Bob Danvers Walker with the 'Yes/No interlude with his gong. :approve:

  10. Thanx for the info Andy-I well recall Ted Moult from growing up in UK-remember 6.5 Special with Wee Willie Harris, Don Lang and his Frantic Five. Also Lord Rockingham's X1-strangely enough I googled (I wish) the organist-Cherry Wainer-still alive and lives in Las Vegas-you can see her perform on a youtube clip.

Pete Murray and Josephine Douglas - Ahhhhh yes - those WERE the days!! my friend. (Mary Hopkin):approve:

  11. Well, I can remember What's My Line? very well. It was essential Sunday night viewing. It ran from 1951 to 1963 and was hosted by Eamonn Andrews. The leading panellists were Gilbert Harding, David Nixon, Lady Isobel Barnett and Barbara Kelly.

There were a number of comparatively unsuccessful revivals in the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Having said all that, I don't remember a speedway rider on it, which is not to say there wasn't. The most famous occupation featured was, of course, the saggar maker's bottom knocker.

YES - Norbold - you are right. Compulsive viewing - brought a tear to my eye thinking back to the somewhat - in my view - better days of Television.

Thank you for that my friend. :):):)

  12. Am I missing something here . The posting was "World Champions That Never Were" I conclude that means Speedway riders that were never World Champions.

So why is the site littered with past world champions.

All Forums have Threads that go off Topic sometimes. I appreciate what you say - but - I am finding this Thread VERY informative, interesting AND also very entertaining. :approve:

I know it has veered away from the original Title - but - for something that is this good - I am happy with the way it is going. :approve:

I don't agree with everything that is said mind.

  13. Ian I am pleased the race jacket that I loaned to the Museum is on display and that you enjoyed seeing it. The race jacket was worn by Bobby Garrad in the VHM event and is signed by him on the back.

See my tribute to Vic Harding on the Canvey Island website with a great action photo of Vic riding for Sunderland in 1974; feel free to leave comments.

    http://www.canveyisland.org/page_id__429_path__0p22p.aspx

Must try to get back to the Speedway Museum and see how it has come on!

Brian - that REALLY is a fantastic photograph. Vic was a super lad who did not deserve what fate handed out. I can still remember talking to him at a pre-Season get together. One of the main things I DO remember is that he ALWAYS had time to talk to Supporters. A lovely Lad sadly missed. R.I.P. + Vic

  14. VERY, VERY GOOD POST falkirkbandit. :approve:

I think a lot of Supporters can relate to a lot of this also. Once Speedway gets in your blood - it is certainly there to stay. I have loved this Sport for over forty years. I know others who have loved it even longer. I will probably go to my grave loving it still. :approve::approve:

Thank you for sharing Howdy's comments with us falkirkbandit. :approve:

  15. But if you are a Mike Parker fan you might not want to read it though

As a Sunderland 'Saints' Supporter - I am NOT impressed with either Parker or Bridgett. Couple of Chancers as far as I am concerned.

They closed Sunderland to strengthen Newcastle and Wolverhampton reasons given were lack of Support and bad weather. 8,500 penultimate Meeting (source: Sunderland Echo) AND we never had a 'rain off'. If they had wanted to close us - I think we should have been told the truth.

Am I bitter??? DAMN RIGHT I AM!! They introduced me to Speedway - I caught the bug - and then they snatched it away from me after only EIGHT Meetings.:mad::mad:

It was to be seven years before Speedway returned to Sunderland under Allied Presentations. After we were sold by Allied Presentations we were kicked from one Promotor to another - crowds dropped and we eventually closed again due to lack of support (true this time). Not surprising though. We had been run in to the ground

Myself and a lot of others worked on the Track and paid to get in. No-one can say we didn't try to keep it going.

YES - we have a lot to be thankful for from Speedway Promotors here in Sunderland - I DON'T THINK!!

  16. I'm not so sure. OK, the guy deserves a title, but would that no simply encourage him to retire at the top? Do we really want another Penhall situation where we don't have a world champion competing?

I thought they said on the Telly on Saturday Night that Tomas Gollob had said he planned to ride for another three years. Someone like him wouldn't pack it in yet - he loves it too much.

  17. I had considered posting something about how much of a fool you really are but it is sufficient to merely highlight your last post and you have done it for me

I think this has gone far enough on here. I UNDERSTOOD when I joined this Forum that you could attack the Post but NOT the Poster.

I like to read this Forum for enjoyment - not seeing people called names. Sometimes I agree with Parsloes1928 other times I don't - BUT - he has his views and he is ENTITLED to them - whether you like it or not.

Let's get back to what we ALL want and that is enjoy ourselves discussing Speedway and having a bit of banter. I don't think calling someone a fool is appropriate.

  18. Sky are business people, not sports fanatics. They would happily show snails racing up the garden path if it attracted 10s or even hundreds of thousands to watch it. High viewing figures mean premium advertising space.

While the viewing figures for the GPs remain high, and they are, along with the perfect formula for TV with lots of natural ad breaks then the GPs will remain on Sky.

The red button debate is of course complete nonsense, it is simply a matter of pressing a button it makes no difference at all. If people are taping the event then clearly they are not bothered about watching live so simply tape a later showing of the event

NOT if you have VIRGIN it isn't.:blink:
