Any home team should be winning heats 13, 14 and 15, but the Brummies won 13 and took a 2-4 and 3-3 from the others. Alfie Bowtell beat local hero Ben Barker in 14, which I thought was a nailed on 5-1 for Plymouth!

For once you are right here ... the presenter at Perry Barr stands on the wrong side of the tapes with his nose in his programme. I once suggested that he should be sent to Wolves to see how Porky works the crowd, generating atmosphere. Or get Porky himself over here! I know a lot of people don't like him, but he is very effective; we need someone like that.

In the late 70s, my family went to an away match at Belle Vue. Having got to the end of the motorway, the heavens opened and rain drenched down. We thought that no way is the meeting going on in this, and turned round and came home. We later discovered that the rain had somehow avoided Belle Vue and the match had gone ahead anyway!

And Birmingham!
