Stormin' Norman takes title

South Australia's Jason Norman (nephew of ex-Peterborough Panther Scott) who won the Aussie Junior Pairs with Oxford's Sam Martin last year, is the new Australian Solo Junior Champion.

 

The youngster romped to an impressive victory tonight winning the sudden death final after topping the scorechart after the conventional 20 heats.

 

A really impressive display from all riders taking part I've got to say and several more names noted in my "little silver book" in my capacity as Oxford's Junior team manager etc so, if you want details of any of 'em.....er tough! LOL

you'll have to come out here yourself to talent spot!

 

Seriously though it was an excellent evening's racing - well done to all the riders - witnessed by a good-sized crowd and all credit to the Poole Family (especially Mick) and all connected with the Central Coast Junior Motorcycle Club for putting on such a great night. Looking forward to tomorrow's (er sorry later today's as it's now 2.15am!) Junior Pairs Championship.

Gotta say it was also good to see so many Senior Aussie riders (e.g. Johnno, Crumpie (who did the presentations) Leigh, Rory etc etc) at the meeting supporting the young up and coming kids.

Yo Brynner, Has Jason a brother who currently rides seniors around Gillman etc?. Another product from that nursery of breeding future champions SIDEWINDERS.Yeah Poolie and Mick Holder etc all have put in countless hours over the previous years into the Somersby track and junior club and finally over the past 24 months things have really picked up junior wise in this state...............Great Stuff.

One of the best speedway meetings you could ever have the priviledge

of watching. Congratulations to Mick Poole who, together with his

club and workers for putting on a first class meeting.

 

All placegetters were very impressive Darcy Ward from Qld stood out

in my opinion. He rode very well in all his heats and continued in

the A final against some very strong competition. Much deserved 2nd

place.

 

Great to see Sam Masters immediately congratulate the winner after

Sam had some undeserved bad luck with a DNF in one of his heats.

Report from GLENN RUSSELL

 

Last Night I attended the Oz U/16 championships at the Somersby Track on

the N.S.W. Championships.

 

Once again a very well run and well attended meeting at the home of the

Central Coast Motor Cycle Club.

 

Mick Poole, Mick Holder, David Smith and their numerous helpers did a

fantastic job and put on really great show and the riders certainly did

their bit with some terrific speedway. It is also very noticeable with

juniors how quickly they get out of the pits and onto the track. At times

there was very little time for myself and co-commentator Peter Baker to get

the correct information to the supporters before the next race started.

 

The meeting itself was won by brilliant young South Aussie Jason Norman who

led the qualifying scores with 14 points from his 5 rides, and made good

use of the favorable gate 1 to comfortably win the final from stylish

Queenslander Darcy Ward and local favorite Sam Masters. The unfortunate

last place in the final was Mildura's Ryan Sedgeman who was the second top

qualifier with 13 points, but a slow gate in the final left him with a lot

to do. Sedgeman had earlier been the only rider to lower Norman's colors

with a victory in heat 6.

 

Masters was looking the goods in the early half of the meeting, but a

disastrous engine blow up in heat 16 left him with a lot to do. He then

survived a tough heat 17 when he came up against Norman and Justin

Sedgeman, but a second place was enough to squeeze him into the final, when

a 3rd or last would have been disastrous.

 

Jan commented earlier that one rider will have to learn that losing is part

of the game and it's best to take out your frustrations in the pits and not

on the track. It's a tough sport.

 

While I would agree with that I would also like to add that one or two

parents need to understand it is the competitors and not them that are the

main event, and the officials running the meeting deserve more respect than

they get at times.

 

It was also terrific to see a number of senior riders in attendance

watching the action, in particular 2004 World Champion Jason Crump who was

in the pits encouraging those who had experienced some misfortune on the

track. Jason also assisted with the presentation and was as relaxed as I

have ever seen him. He commented favorably on the racing and the effort the

riders had put in, and looked back in time to his own career in juniors

when he learnt the craft that ultimately had taken him to the top.

 

Jason also donated some T Shirts for the placegetters and some signed and

framed photos which were handed to some of the support riders as an

encouragement award.

 

It is great to see a current world champion putting something back into the

sport at the junior level and I am sure those who were present last night

would certainly agree with me that Jason deserves and gets our respect for

his efforts at the meeting.
