f-s-p 832 Posted August 24, 2011 (edited) I note Lebedev nearly blew in for Ketti again (but not quite.).with a tapes & Fall! He nearly did, again. I heard today that he was so angry with himself after saturday's fall when he really did cost Keittiöpiste the meeting, that he stopped talking to everyone and just sat quiet... When he fell while challenging Nemo yesterday, he quickly got up, jumped over the fence and gave hell to his toolbox and other gear. But he is really fast and as I understand he only turns 17 this November. I spoke to him after the meeting with the help of his mechanic and he seemed a good bloke (or the mechanic gave his own version of it all ). I wished him all the best and he seemed to appreciate my efforts. The track at Pori was exactly what I like for a Finnish meeting. Rock hard in the beginning with material gathering to the outer third of the track on bends after 6 or so heats. Not dusty at all as all the spray was wet enough to be down on the track before the riders were back at it again on the next lap. There were some really good battles, but the best was Jari Mäkinen's clean pass over Kauko Nieminen in heat 14. He got under him exiting turn 4 and dived again entering turn one and pushed him away. It was great, shame I had to duck when they rode past me, otherwise I'd be R/R for the rest of the season myself. Hyvinkää next saturday with great expectations... Table: Keittiöpiste +223 / 30 Sand Blowers +225 / 29 Kotkat +217 / 25 Paholaiset +79 / 14 If Keittiöpiste wins over Sand Blowers, they are champions. If Sand Blowers win over Keittiöpiste, they are champions by larger amount of heat points. Edited August 24, 2011 by f-s-p
f-s-p 832 Posted August 27, 2011 (edited) Sand Blowers from Hyvinkää are the SM-liiga champions of 2011. It was really close with SB needing a 4-2 from the final heat of the season against their championship rival Keittiöpiste. A 3-3 draw would have given the title to Keittiöpiste. Messing gated and Mäkinen was left at the back in the first corner. Teemu Lahti kept second for a lap while Aki-Pekka Mustonen tried REALLY hard to keep Mäkinen at the back. He did not succeed though and when Lahti had a near tumble Mäkinen thanked and flew by... The track had improved immensely from July. It still had to be graded every three heats, but it was much better than last time. f-s-p 832 Posted September 3, 2011 (edited) Nemo continues his reign as the Finnish champion. He won the rerun of the final before Juha Hautamäki and Tero Aarnio. First try saw Jari Mäkinen excluded after he was passing Tero Aarnio on the backstraight for third. Controversial is an appropriate term for the decision, since I thought Aarnio turned left on him in the middle of the straight. Mäkinen had already gated and was in control entering the first bend, but hit a rut and lifted allowing everyone pass him. In the semi Mäkinen was first before Hautamäki, Teemu Lahti and Mika Loppi. Final top3 for the history books from the final heat details in bold. EDIT: The incident between Aarnio and Mäkinen in Youtube by . This is shot fom maybe 30 meters away towards the second bend from the ref's tower. I'm the black spot in the middle of first bend and saw it from behind. Can almost understand the call by the ref after watching the tape, but having seen it from a "better" angle I do feel the call made was wrong. f-s-p 832 Posted October 10, 2011 It seems that the season in Finland has been wrapped up. Kuusankoski, Seinäjoki, Varkaus (back in business) and Hyvinkää have all held their final practise sessions and closed for the season so to speak. I was at Hyvinkää last saturday and had a spin myself after a few years break. I've only done about 40 laps alltogether since 2002 and this was the 4th of 5th time out. It was OK, alltough it must have looked more like cycle speedway than speedway. Did not fall this time, so that was an improvement from last time. I thought I had it sliding, but everytime bottled it and turned the gas off. Thanks to that I'm here writing this and not at the hospital. I thought the season was pretty good. The league was again excellent with a last heat decider for the title. Crowds were up 30 % from last year. Especially Kuusankoski deserves a mention for keeping Timo Lahti, Tero Aarnio and Andre Lebedev in their team despite them actually being foreigners this season. I'll post a short wrap up later, but there will be no results anymore from Finland appearing. The yearly track racing conferences will be held at Tampere on October 29th. Thats when we'll know more about next year and how it'll shape up.
f-s-p 832 Posted November 6, 2011 The Finnish AGM was held a week ago here at Tampere. On top of the agenda were a few rule changes for the SM-liiga, how to open the Kaupunki Cup for possibly all riders and fine tuning a couple of other rules. Last season was the first year I've been in charge of doing the rules and creating the fixture list over here, so I expected some feedback. Especially since during the season I had been getting plenty of stick, but this time everyone was pretty much quiet and kept to their own. I've been a regular in these meetings (missed only 2 of 16 since 2004) lately and to my amazement we had the team building for next years SM-liiga sorted in 30 minutes. SM-liiga rules are: - teams must declare their intention to take part and the riders by December 20th 2011. - Combined average for the team must not exceed 30,00 when entering the league. - Riders will take their place in the team according to their averages as the highest on 1 and so on. - Averages will be updated once half of the meetings are ridden. - a new (extra) heat will start the meeting with every teams reserve rider in it. - R/R stays in place - Foreign U17's will now come on an assessed 7,00 average. (Who's in line on 2012?) Kaupunki Cup was opened to all Finnish riders. The intention of the Cup has been to give riders a crack of racing without anyone lapping them, but it was now opened for everyone. It's both good and bad, only time will tell. The really good ones will more or less likely be out riding abroad, but for riders like Mika Loppi (tight budget) and Niko Siltaniemi (was out for the whole 2011 due to injury) it will make the world of good. Also the organizing club is now allowed to run an extra team in their home match. Further increasing the chance of letting new riders take a spin without having the whole season on their shoulders. Teams must enlist for the Cup until the end of January 2012. I already have one teams list of riders ready. Like mentioned, Niko Siltaniemi was back on the bike a month ago. He had a few spins at Hyvinkää and did OK. No reason not to expect great things of him again next season. SM-liiga was again really tightly contested right till the end. We saw an increase of 30 % in the total crowd in the SM-liiga and 10 % in the KC. It'll be interesting to see how the Finnish format will work in next years league. It had two really good years with average control, now that the rider's on 3 and 4 can be a bit better, we'll see. A new idea of an East vs West meeting was introduced at the AGM. It's sort of stolen from the Finnish baseball, where it's the biggest event of their season. There was also a very interesting sideshow planned to be introduced during the Finnish league and the have it's final at the E vs. W meeting. I think it's an excellent idea, hopefully we can get it going next season. Microspeedway (toddlers on 50cc bikes) is also running in Finland. Vaasa is the benchmark at the moment for anyone interested, since they have around 20 kids riding weekly in their practise sessions. They have 1-3 kids in various cities elsewhere, but Vaasa has been a huge success compared. Also we saw the first Finnish veteran days in speedway, when Harry Lahti (Vaasa) and Risto Flink (Lahti) got their heads together and made it happen. There were 3-4 riding days held and I think they had around 15 different riders taking part. Lahti was very optimistic about the future of these kind of meetings and expects new riders to come along next year. Finnish news for 2011 is now dealt with on my behalf. I'll post iceracing info on the ice racing thread. This thread was on over 80 views per post before this one. Alltough I sort of played it to get it that high, I hope it shows that people are taking more notice of us. With riders like Timo Lahti coming through, You really need to as well... See you!
