Vote For Your Top 10 1970s Race Jackets/Bibs

Recommended Posts

And now for a bit more sensitive topic.

Please vote for your favourite top 10 speedway race jackets.

I will compile a top 30 and put a video on YouTube of these jackets. All race jackets/bib from the 1970s may be chosen but please do try to specify a year as some did change race jackets regularly during the 1970s.

The vote closes at midnight on 31 May 2020.

As I started going speedway in 1976 my list would be.

1 Wimbledon (1975-76) my team first race jacket that I saw racing (1976)

2 Bristol (1977-78)

3 Teeside (1976-77)

4 White City (1976) (red)

5 Scunthorpe (1976)

6 Wimbledon (1977) (chevron)

7 Belle Vue (1970-76 and 1978-79)

8 Hackney (1973-79)

9 Halifax (1975-78)

10 Paisley (1975-76)

Where a race jacket is not significantly different from previous season by a Gulf badge or number being present or not in some cases these race bibs will be grouped together, as the main element of the race jacket (emblem/s) has not changed.

Difficult one this...and not allowed to nominate my own personal favourite which would be either Oxford (1972) or White City (1976) therefore...

Belle Vue (1972), Wimbledon (1976), Poole (1972), Exeter (1973), Wolves (1972)

Cradley (1970- 72)

West Ham (same years)

Halifax (ditto)

Belle Vue (as above)

Wembley (70/71)

Have to agree with Cradley, Belle Vue, and Wembley.

I also loved Paisley and the original Canterbury.

I been thinking about not being allowed to list your own team so I'm going to change the post to allow your own team.

If I can get a top 30 list and I can find a colou image I will create a top 30 kis on YouTube voting is open until the end of May 2020.

Many thanks for your votes Steve

Belle Vue 1972 and 1976 are the same so I have added these to mine. I have shared your points for White City (1976) (red) and Oxford (1972).

I have just added to race jackets to Wimbledon video that can now be found on YouTube at

Hmmmm ... yellow star on a red background.

Very Vietnam.

The five points of the Vietnam star supposedly represents five sections of their society.

What does the Wimbledon star represent?

Good question...and at the risk of stirring up a hornet's nest I guess the Confederate Flag would raise issues now...back in 1972 as a kid it looked so good and I personally never looked beyond the image. It was part of the Cowboys 'n' Indians culture that my generation grew up with watching westerns and dressing up!

Were Oxford the rebels once?  Trying to remember. Didn’t one team have a confederate emblem?

Indeed. I was actually wondering the point of the thread. Is it looking for specific jackets that were only or first used in the 70s ? As a lot of the choices seem to not really fall into the category

Wembley or West Ham for instance are no different in the 70s to what they were in the 40s as is  Belle Vue......

DC2 Oxford were he rebels before moving to White City in 1976.

I have no-idea why Wimbledon colours re red with a yellow star. Hopefully someone on here will be able to inform us.

So far got some race jackets the last to do for now is Wolves 1972.

Bristol 1977 & 1978 are also the same.

Yes Oxford had a change of image in 1972 with Dave Lanning at the helm and the nickname followed the team to White City.
