The Speedway was a fair ground ride?
-
I may be totally wrong, but I seem to remember Martin Ashby scoring 2 maximums on one night, while guesting for Wimbledon. 1976 I think when the dons were short of a recognised number one due to Tommy Jansson's demise.

"Rolling, Rolling,Rolling, Though the streams are swollen, keep them doggies Rolliing, Rawhide". Gil Favor and Rowdy Yates(Clint Eastwood). Linda Cristal in High Chapparal Bonanza: Little Joe and Horse Cartwright. The Virginian: remember it being on TV, can't remember much else about storylines setting etc. Was! Rin Tin Tin, a western series seem to remember watching when very young he was an alsation, I was scared of big dogs then. Got to remember Champion the wonder horse if only for the title music song. Of course the best ever cowboy was Four Feather Fours, absolute classic TV. But my absolute favourite was Ivanhoe!.

Mine arrived on the doorstep on saturday, "whats that" I thought. "It's Uncle Len's book". I told the missis, You haven't got an Uncle called Len she replied. Women what do they know eh? I have so many books I haven't read yet, somehow think it may get pushed up the pile.

Leigh Adams Last Gp At Bydgoszcz
slickmick replied to racers and royals's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
The saying goes ; always the bridesmaid never the bride. It would have been lovely to have seen Leigh as number one in his last GP, but reality strikes. Fortunately not lost to the British Elite League hopefully of a couple of years plus. -

Blimey, only phoned up yesterday afternoon, and dvd drops on my doormat this morning. Now thats what I call customer service, well done all at retro.
-
He might or retro will, I seem to remember purchasing this dvd months ago, being told there was a delay in publishing and never hearing anything again? Sorry tmc, I didn't mean it to seem so serious, forgot to stick a smiley on the end. I realise I should contact your office about delay, I keep leaving your tel no. at home when I try to phone from work.

Check out Issue 12 of Backtrack,Jan-Feb 2006. Popular in poland, I can't think of many other riders who have a statue as thier memorial.

I was only a nipper when Eric Williams rode at New Cross, but he was my favourite rider, I remember badgering my Big Brother every week until I got the rosette I so coveted with his photo on it. I had that rosette years, don't know what happened to it. RIP Eric,

In his white boots and glasses, tartan on show when he could get away with it, He nearly made you forget he was Scottish because he was so generous in spirit and good humoured. (didn't he ride over Reg Luckhurst, Oops that wasn't one of the funny things he did) Speedway meetings when he was about were rarely boring, did I mention those white boots. Of course its the one and only, famous in his favourite haggis shop. Ladies and Gentlemen, Give it up for............... Bugger!!! forgotten his name

The only thing you could accuse Edward Jancarz(Wimbledon) of was unpredictable about when he was going to arrive at the start of each season. Once here you realised why he was called Steady Eddie. If you wanted thrills and spills Zenon Plech or Andy the whoosh(his name was lots of zys's) at Hackney.

Brad Oxley ; sadly never a titan except in height. But Dons fans loved him. John(cowboy) Cook; Looking over his shoulder, under his legs everywhere except where he was going, but strangely it worked for him. Bruce Penhall; also my most hated american, but grudgingly you had to admire his skill and professionalism, even if you hated his effectiveness in winning.

I know how big the new stadium is now, It's teeny tiny compared to the old stadium which was, Oh yeah, teeny tiny but on a large piece of land. thank you for your replies some of which have been useful. Not sure it helps in the race to the check out counter in busy periods. I do miss the old stadium, took the wife for a meal in the restuarant on a wedding anniversary once. I don't know how I got away with it either. Someone somewhere described it as a mini Wimbledon. I don't make them wrong, there are few tracks which could match either venue for customer satisfaction. But why oh why can we not get a track in London.

I agree Roger was my main man through all those years at wimbledon.

Can anyone settle an argument between the missis and I, with regards The old Crayford Speedway stadium. The site is now totally different to what it was then. The argument is basically, where in relation to the site as it is now. Was the old speedway stadium. The wife says it was where the new stadium is now. I say it was on the site of the Sainsburys store. I have this vague probably wrong idea that the new stadium was built before the old one demolished.

The Corner Pin at Wimbledon.

First meeting at the tender age of 6, was at New Cross. Not a clue who they were riding against. The only opponents I remember being Belle Vue and Norwich. Eric Williams was my favourite rider, and I thought Split Waterman's name was made up. Apart from being interested in the first lap, of maybe the first race and when Eric rode(first lap possibly). I had this big stadium(it was big to me ) to play in, Big Brother was watching the silly racing. Don't think we went after 1961, by that time Big Bro had learnt to drive and also found a new interest in GIRLS.extremely yukky to a seven year old, all that kissing, yuk

I went to Custom House, drove though the gates. Unfortunately they were towards the end constructing a housing estate, My brother and me delivering a three piece suite, in beige velvet, across unmade roads and pavements on a rainy evening trying to keep out of the puddles and muddy places. So thats one I would have loved to have seen speedway. But being a southern boy I always wanted to get to northern tracks. I managed to get to the Shay(okay the facillities were basic, but that banked track was something to behold). But I really really wish I had seen a meeting at Hyde Road. and witness the whole Belle vue thing, fairground etc:. There are still some I am determined to get to at some time in the future if they don't disappear first. Sheffield, Peterborough, Wolverhampton,Edinburgh and Glasgow to name but a few. Thinking about it I would really like to see a Elite or Premier league meeting at Wimbledon or Hackney.

Erik Gundersen Danish Speedway Superstar
slickmick replied to Jim Blanchard's topic in Years Gone By
Ole Olsen is surely the Great Dane the rest come after and though brilliant riders will not misplace Olsen. Great dane, grandfather, father and the inspiration of the insurgence of Danish speedway. -
Tony my big brother for dragging me along to see speedway (firstly at New Cross in the 60s) then at Wimbledon Crayford tuesday Wimbledon thursday Wednesdays was a 80s thing wasn't it, when plough lane became GRA h/o? Hackney friday at 8 Canterbury saturday(rarely as I used to work saturdays) Eastbourne Sunday afternoon The spring classic and internationale at wimbledon That daily mirror international series final at Wembley(my first speedway meeting at the twin towers) The hotdogs at same meeting the shock when I heard about Tommy Janssons death. Roger Johns (wimbledon) Barry Thomas (hackney/crayford/hackney) Bert(haggis) Harkins White boots and his kilts The geek with a motor bike who took my then girlfriend to white city(I didn't drive then) The future girlfriend now my Wife, I think I fell even deeper in love when she said she had been too 2 wembley world finals and used to support Canterbury crusaders, and she had a Triumph Herald(I still didn't drive then) Taking ages to smooth a Wimbledon speedway sun visor across the screen of the triumph(think we had one on the rear screen as well). The feeling of belonging the night we turned up slightly later then usual to find someone had saved our favourite seats for us. The night going home from Crayford in the pouring rain, when we found we had a flat tyre , and the night of the road on his kawasaki ,who changed the tyre for us, as he said he was better attired in his leathers then we were, good old Bernie, every where we went after that he seem to be there, and we never told him where we would be going. I could keep going for ages but it is beginning to become my life story.

I remember back in the dim distant times when DJ was still riding, he was a very good golfer. He even got to play on the BBC golf prog Peter Allis used to do, Think it was called something like, A round with Alliss.
