  1. They might be a bit little more expensive than standard parts unless your talking Taitanium then that's a different league again but they are definitely a lot stronger better built/made then standard parts and if serviced at the proper intervals they will last as long as any standard part but the top riders will change these parts every other service whether it needs it or not I would never use a piston for more than 2 years that would be around 4 services one at the start of the season and one around 50ish heats mid season a rod should last for years or until it honed to the max size of pin and if you can get the set up right at most tracks your engine will perform without too much stress on it when we go to Armadale on a Friday the home riders engines are pretty quiet flat because the track is pretty much the same every meeting every week butcookies bike always sounded so flat but no one could touch him around there infact he gets the set up pretty spot on every meeting after his first ride just listen to his bike compared to other riders on track if you ever go to watch him then listen to other riders engines screaming there ** off who's engines is working right
  2. what is the difference between a standard engine and a tuned engine that is a good way to start they all have the same internals although several different types off flywheels ,rod, piston valves springs ignition carb the tuner puts them together his way it is really the tuner that puts the right combination together and does the best for his rider
  3. Think if standard engines came in it would be like watching F1 VERY BOREING these days first out the gate or the one with the fastest bike would win most times no passing only way I see to try change is put rev limiter on ignition and maybe a smaller carb body and put a bit more dirt on the tracks
  4. Pretty sure some Riders would just love to turn up and put a standard engine into their roller at no cost to them what's so ever ride the guts out of it because if it blows up they wouldn't care and go home maybe no points money because the engine was unless lacked power where it counts, A top rider will blow standard engine up in no time as it will be ridden to the max not many riders ride there own engines to the max I am pretty sure at the start of last year Richard Lawson went throught a spate of blowing a few engines up too he found out it was his new carb that was the problem flooding and when methanol. Gets into your oil it turns to water seizes pretty quick , speedway is a cheap sport compared to some motorsports it's like anything that's mechanical look after it and it will last a lot longer
  5. cant see any club buying 16 new engines even buying 16 you would never get 2 engines that work the same employing mechanics paying for services as they would all have to be done at the same time to much money for clubs to fork out as all the riders are self employed so its really up to them to buy them and to keep their engines well maintained most do if they are scoring points and making money most riders will keep their engines and buy new rolling chassis each year that,s also where riders loss a lot of money durning the season when they crash sometimes its not their fault and wreck it they can be straightened but sometimes they have to be binned a set of forks and a diamond could set you back £500plus and its not even your fault
  6. I and another ex pl rider spannered for pl heat leader last year and if the rider had a bad first race he would race into pits saying bikes not working right and to change the jet shorten bike and knock back the timing a bit ex rider would tell me to take link out the rear chain and he would kid on he was doing The rest the when he went out next heat and win it by half a straight the ex rider knew where he was going wrong most things that go wrong are blamed on the bike when it's in the rider head As for a standard where do you start there are several types engine offset baby offset standard several types of flywheels heavy big small eccentric same as con rods different lengths ,loads of different types of Pistons loads of cams different weight valve springs that is where a good tuner who works with his riders makes his money putting the right things to suit the rider
  7. all services are different and depends who does it , if it's the same tuner he will know what has been changed at the last service and the one before that ect as some things wear But still look ok as PJR said most failures are bad maintainance and running there engines longer than they should rather than get it serviced or wait till it blows up before fixing when we started we ran a engine for a full year and I could never put how many laps we did on it before we sent it away now we would never do more than 50 hts as he is riding it harder faster our tuner knows our engines now having looked after them for 2/3 years so knows what needs changed when we send them back and he keeps everything logged most services are around £250 mark £150 labour the rest is parts for a standard service but the last one i got done was £590 as I put a new piston and valves/Spring main bearings as these are the most common parts that fail only just because they have been in there since I got the engine and don't know how long they have been in there before I got it old parts still looked good but like everything else they have a life span better safe than Sorry
  8. What would you class as a standard engine thou there is more in the rider than any engine out there you could put Chris holder on a standard engine and his times would not differ that much maybe a second overall but to the top guys that's the difference between 1st and 2nd it's all about getting the right setup for each track get it wrong and on track it puts strain on the engine riders will always have there favorite engine that works on most tracks but always seem to try get something better to work on the day
  9. They would probably still have said no
  10. Good chance of a live sky match now between them but as they usually show on Monday nights can't see it being at Armadale as think they can only run Friday and Saturday
  11. Alan Dick and Colin Hamilton were both there at the final as both were in the pits before the meeting started Ian Adams was not present as he is barred
  12. Looking from a business side of this if Glasgow run this event and Edinburgh decided to run their match on the Saturday which is there alternative day you would think the diehard speedway fans would maybe stay up and go to Armadale and make a weekend of it both teams win
  13. Workington did not own there track and from what the bspa say they have only got a objection it will be up to them to give the final say
  14. Why build a new purpose built speedway stadium in Manchester and not use it home advantage is minimal I think in these top events and with it being a new track will take the home riders a while to get it right
  15. Some of these figures costs are way out, a service from a tuner that we use is normally around the £300 mark £150 labour the rest is parts which includes mains ,pin , and rings reseat valves new gaskets ect and thorough check of everything else which is pretty standard and he tells us to do around 50/55 hts before he wants it back so we keep a note of what we do and try to get it back to him When it's dew , most riders will do that but a lot will just estimate what they have done . not many NL riders will buy new engines they will buy from decent pl/elite riders who they trust and these riders normally give you paperwork with what it's had done last time like when it last had piston rod ect most major failures that I have seen are the piston breaking/turning and basically wrecking the complete top end which then costs excess of £1000++ got one away at the moment for service and tuner said that we should put a new piston as it must be over 2 seasons old (that's how long he has been looking after it and don't really know how long it's been in there ) but it still looks ok , ok it's £200 extra but for piece of mind I do it a spending a little extra saves in the long run in this sport I think but a lot of riders and some tuners will say if it looks ok just leave it and keep their money in their pocket false economy I think .t As for clubs buying engines that's got no chance lol even if you bought 7 standard new engines you would get a couple that were faster than others and a few that would be slower than the rest never get 2 the same
  16. So every engine that's out now could be obsolete unless they can be made to standardisation regs how many NL riders could afford to buy a couple new standard engines how many riders will cheat who will check engines if anybody follows PJR on Facebook he basically says bad maintainance causes most failures this is what he says good read Our engines are STD a very high STD and when looked after they last a long time. We use the best parts that go the distance. I was not sure about the use of titanium when the rules were changed 3 years ago but I can't believe how long these parts last and the amount of races you can do with no power loss. We have had guys doing > 80 races between services. Educating people to look after engines would be a lot more cost effective. The biggest killer of engines is DIRT, closely followed by over revving. This over revving normally HAPPENS IN THE PITS! why rev engines to > 14k on the warm up? corrosion of parts due to water ingress, when bikes are washed is another problem. These issues will affect any engine and are quite easily avoided. Engines being used in the UK should last forever. The tracks are small and we have no extreme ambient temperatures like you get in Poland. For an example of running costs we had one of our higher profile customers do 52 races on a engine from new before service. This included 2 18 point maximums in > 35 degrees heat in Poland, a GP win & rostrum place. The Total cost for the service was less than £400. You can't get better value than that.! Speedway is a simple, cheap motorsport.
  17. Yes it's the same track for speedway loads more pictures on the Stoke potters Facebook page think all the major work has been done with just the track to sort out
  18. Ben will travel up Saturday same as Danny ayres and will stay Saturday nights rather than have to drive up on the race days
  19. Pretty sure these 3 point reserves will have no problem stepping up to the PL even think there might even be a few taking some second string and a few heat leader scalps for sure
  20. His pl ave sorry would double to ride in NL But as he has not ridden in it he would be given an accessed average and if was over 6 he would not qualify to ride reserve
  21. Would depend what average He would be given if he was to ride in NL and double that would give him his pl average
  22. maybe Edinburgh were not willing to part with Any money signing on fee as they new they would drop whoever it was and bring in Mitchell when he got his visa Pretty sure that has been scrapped this year
  23. A bit off thread but Wonder if Mitchell Davy gets in at Edinburgh on a 3 ave and on a British passport will he now be eligible to ride NL and as he has not ever ridden in NL will he come in on a 3 and will he slot in at Stoke as last reserve???
  24. Team Spiller will not be racing till middle of the year as he is sitting exams back in Germany and will probably slot back into Eastbourne and can't see any pl team paying his flights back and forward from Germany
