Danny Bird in 1998? He lead form the tapes but Mark Simmonds tried to pass him, they locked up and went into the fence, Bird flew (no pun intended) over the fence, Simmonds and 2 bikes were sprawled across the track and the Exeter rider had to lay the bike down to avoid them and Scott Swain managed to swerve his way through 3 bikes and 2 rider. Nasty crash. Nastiest crash I have seen at Newport is Nick Simmons crashing through the 2nd bend fence in a CL double header against Buxton (we had just won the CL title and we were lossing in the KoC first leg), Danny Slater was on track unconsious, one Buxton rider was down there with them somewhere and the other Buxton rider had slid off further around but was able to jump up and run after the bike that was trapped in the fence but still running and stop it. It wa sone of them moment where nobody said a word, everyone was just staring at the ple of bikes and bodies. Nick was lying with half his body on the track, half outside the track and had managed to dislodge a few fence panel (takes some doing at Newport, never bene done since). Danny Slater was taken away in an ambulance and I think he retired from speedway then (he may have done another meeting or two, he still grass tracks though) to join the police force. Nick was down for a long time but did go to hospital, he was released with nothing more than a torn finger nail!!!! For such a spectacular (if thats the right word) that reulted in 2 rider being left on the track for about 50 minutes the injuries were incredably tame.

Danish National Team vs UK National Team
SCB replied to garf's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Speedway Star says Morten IS riding. -
I thought it was Justin Elkins - Ben Powell I'm having to bite my tongue here or I could be quite nasty

Pay peanuts, get monkeys! No disrespect the the Russians who are there, it's just the SWC it's self does not pay enough for the riders to make money so there no chance of the qualifiers making the riders any money!

Seen a program about her on the tele, she damaged her back in a crash.
-
Does he have a sister who rides? Rachel or somethig similar to that?

Not only is the lesser riders getting easier rides compared to the big boys making it flawed, so is the fact that the clever riders (Hans Nielsen was one of the best) knew when to accept 2nd and didn't always go for the win. That more of a flaw with the system that the idea of averages though IMO, riders should not be allowed to settle for 2nd. Still intresting though, would be more intresting to know how many GP's each rider rode in to get them averages. Has anyone ever done anything similar with World Final results? (where it is represtentative, all rider meet each other and the guy with the highest average DOES become World Champion) I tried it with a few riders and Ivan Mauger had an awesome average, 11+ (using 4 rides).

But I'm sure even a spell checker would point out them errors :s

WTC Squads
SCB replied to howe and stead foreva's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I believe Wato is in the Australian squad but I don't know who else is. -
Slightly flawed. Some rider have a lot mroe rides than other in the easier early heats. Doesn't make it fair.

Graham Reeve said so on yahoo last year. No, Team GB have nothing to do with European Champinships either (that how france, Italy, Solvenia and Germany get to finals). Who the hell would support a junior World under 21 team championship? :s The WTC(or SWC) is a worth while competition. BTW, in football, who was last World junior Champions? I bet nobody knows without having to look ont he net, nobody cares!
-
Team GB are not entering this joke of a competition as they don't wnat to have riders riding eslewhere and being unavailable for league meetings. So he'll be at Workington while this competition taks place. Hopefully the BSPA will block the use of guests and R/R for riders riding in this competition. Let the lesser countries compete, France, Germany, Slovenia etc but GB, Sweden and Denmark have nothing to prove and I image Australia will struggle to get a decent team together anyway. Woodward, Wethers, Parsons, Schlein and Ezergailis is hardly scary!
-
I think an s slipped in there Garf Just like I slipped in an r. JT, Team GB are not sending team, I don't think any of the main countries are.

It's not until next year is it? Plus who's in it? France, Latvia, Russia, Solvernia, Mongolia and Saudi Arabia?!

He also rode for IoW in the PL for a while. I remeber him scoring 11 rom 4 at Newport. He went home to Australia for a year to save up and buys some bikes and never come back. Which was a shame.

Re-Run heats
SCB replied to charlietheplasterer's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
As Nicholls and his bike were sprawled across the track he'd have been in the re-run with AJ and who ever it was that won the heat. It HAS to be re-run if a rider falls and causes another rider to fall or lay the bike down so there no chancing your arm, it's a sure fire way to get your self another chance! Similary, if you're in third and the rider in 4th is close to you, go into the bend and let him knock you off, though thats harder that laying it down. I guess the referee could exclude the rider who laid the bike down for unnessearilly laying the bike down so it might be a risk, but the rider has nothing to lose. -
Actually, the tapes where not there as Puk had just rode through them

commentators not really there?
SCB replied to keepturningleft's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Sometimes he gets things wrong for not being there but saying Oh and rider X has justed passed Rider A when we can all see it's rider Y passing rider A, Millard has no excuses then. He's done quite well tonight though on the Swindon vs Peterborough meeting. -
Actually, it's american flat track they show. It usually on men and motors so kepe an eye out, worth watching. They showed a programme about the making of On any Sunday a few weeks back and had interviews with Ivan Mauger (I think). They also had ice speedway and showed lots of clips of all the other motor cycle disaplines they did not show in the final film. Would you beleive they lost the speedway footage so could not show you much of that!!! Again, it was on Men and Motors, so it's sure to be repeated, keep and eye it it's worth watching. On the Speedway on Men and Motors theme, Ouch! That had to hurt has had a few speedway crashes on there, last time I watched in there top 5 crashes of the season, 2nd place was a speedway crash. I have seen the episode with Frank Smarts Farewell twice now.

Re-Run heats
SCB replied to charlietheplasterer's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I'm waiting for the day when some rider uses his head to get another chance. In the first semi last night I was screamig at the tele for Puk to lay the bike down on the run upto the line to "avoid" Scott Nicholls and get a re-run as all the riders would not have passed the line. It's only a matter of time before someone falls on the 4th bend and someone lays the bike down to avoid him rather than riding over the line in 4rd. Or am I the only cynical one who would use this loop-hole if ever given a chance? Cheating? Nah, just a loop-hole that I'm sure Matt Ford would use -
Nicki Pedersen Spits Out His Dummy Again
SCB replied to REAPER's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Surely how hard Pedersen hit Crump is irrelevant, if you look at it another way and say Hancock should have been excluded when he almost wiped out Nicholls?! -
What about Scott then!!
SCB replied to GeneralMelchett's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Oh yeah, I had money on Scott to win, so I was suporting him
