The tractor tyres are not the problem as they are easily moved. The issue is the grass you can see behind them as that is raised several feet above track level with a plate fence on the track side, and there is no inner kerb so the shale is right up to the plating.
-
How is that any different to the fence at Kings Lynn ? At least there is a grass banking to land on should a rider be unfortunate enough to clear the fence, unlike the concrete that Doyle landed on at Lynn a couple of years ago.

I'm not sure what stock car meetings you are referring to, but crowds are very variable depending on the formula and the event. Yes, the F1s get biggish crowds, especially for the more important meetings, but how many of them are locals? F1 stock cars is a 'travelling circus' with drivers and fans coming from all over the country. Many F1 fans will do most meetings in the season, irrespective of the location. Team sports such as speedway are very different and rely quite heavily on local support. How many speedway fans would travel from Lancashire or Yorkshire for a meeting at Kings Lynn ? Stock cars is my main hobby and I will generally watch 40ish meetings in a season from my Nottinghamshire base. My nearest track is an hour from home, and most are within 2 hours that I visit reguarly, but I will also visit Taunton once or twice a season at around 4 hours, and will usually do a St Day (Cornwall) or Cowdenbeath most years and these are around 6 hours away. Speedway fans won't travel like that generally, with the bulk of the crowd at most meetings being fans of the home team. -
As I said in my response to IainB, once agreed the Local Plan can't just be changed overnight by new Councillors. The 'decisions' for the plan and the CPO will be recorded and the Council staff will persue the agreed action. As far as I am aware, talks have already taken place between the Council and the consortium, and as long as the Local Plan passes the consultation process it will definitely be happening. The difficulties will potentially come from Brandon Esatates, not from the Council.
-
Highly unlikely. Local plans are long term strategy documents for development including infrastructure and land use, that often cover a period of up to 15-20 years. They are reviewed on a 5 yearly basis. The local plan is currently out for a 6 week public consultation which started in late January. It will then be submitted to the Secretary of State, along with all the responses, for review and final approval. Even if it is not signed off before the May elections, a new administration at the council will not be able to make changes to the plan at that point.

Does it cause a problem at Kings Lynn and Scunthorpe ? What about in the past at Sheffield, Coventry, Mildenhall, Swindon, Long Eaton, and many others ? The 2 sports need to work together to keep stadiums open, not fall out with each other. -
Personally, I think 2028 is ambitious. The local plan has to be agreed before any action can be taken, then there will be the long drawn out CPO process, which you know Brandon Estates will fight against. Then when all that is concluded there will be a lot of work to do on the site, particularly with regards to the grandstand which will have to be completely demolished, and that will be time consuming due to the asbestos contamination procedures. I would love to be proved wrong, but in all honesty I can't see the 'new Coventry' opening before the 2029 season.

The consortium looking to buy the stadium and bring it back is made up of 5 business men. 4 of them are very much stock car people, but the 5th - John Whalley - is a name I don't recognise from stock car circles. 2 of the stock car people are the partners involved in the Yorstox company, so I would imagine they would take on the stock car promotion if Coventry returned, but somebody would still be required to promote the speedway side of things. -

The majority of the stadium is grass bankings for spectators, but there is a large uncovered all seater grandstand on the back straight. Capacity won't be an issue, the track is holding the F1 Stock Car World Final this year which will see an attendance far bigger than any British Speedway Premiership match will achieve. -

Yes that's fair comment in terms of the electrics, but people on here are talking as if a new structure would be required. Stock cars use traffic lights for signalling to drivers, so there are multiple sets of lights all the way round the track which could be utilised for the 'race stop'. The existing box also has LED lighting built into it externally so that the whole box lights up in green, yellow, or red to signify current race conditions. -

DaveWayne replied to RoundTheBoards's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Yes, there is a box on the home straight where the steward, lap scorer, commentator, etc are housed, but people on this thread talking about what will need to be built keep including a ref's box so I assumed they were confident none of the existing infrastructure is suitable. 😉 -

DaveWayne replied to RoundTheBoards's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
That building is on the bend and quite a long way from the track. Would assume a ref's box would need to be overlooking the start line ? -
I am guessing that due to the distance from the pitch and the poor view, very few people stand on the corner/end terrace, so everyone is congregated in the grandstand or the terrace on the opposite side. Those areas would look full in any pictures, but there would be a lot of unused terracing on the Rooley Avenue end.

Not sure what you were watching but I think you need a trip to the opticians. 😉 There is no 'speedway' track in place. The scumbags dug up all the shale and kicked out the stock car promoters, despite the fact that without stock cars they would still be playing 'home' games outside Bradford and in the league below. -

Have I missed something ? What are the 'stock car announcements' you are referring to ? -

What you can't see on those photos is that the grassed area on the inside of the bends is raised several feet from the track, has steel plate on the track side of it, and there is no longer an inner kerb so the shale goes right up to the plating. -
The latest statement from the Bulls chairman is utter bull !! Yorstox have the F1 World Final this year - the biggest event on the stock car calendar. There is no way they would choose not to run it at the largest capacity stadium in the sport. One of the promoter's sons even raced at the 2025 WF meeting in September with the date and venue of the 2026 WF advertised on his aerofoil as being at Bradford. He is implying that they only lifted the shale when Yorstox told them they were not planning to run there in 2026. This is untrue as I know for a fact that the shale was lifted in December. The first Yorstox knew of it was when someone who attended a funeral wake at the stadium for an ex-driver sent them a photo. The F1 fixtures for 2026 were delayed in being published as Yorstox were suddenly left without a venue and they have had to arrange to hire other tracks in order to run their allotted meetings, including moving the WF to Northampton. Probably the only reason they haven't completed the changes to the pitch is because they knew that Yorstox had a lease and would take legal action against them.

Have you tried driving down the M1 on a week day afternoon ? It's far from fairly easy. I live near J28 and used to be able to do the 60 miles to Coventry in an hour for a Saturday stock car meeting. When I went to the occasional Friday night meetings it used to take me an hour just to get the 40 miles to J21, and it gets worse once you get below J19 and the M6. -

The stadium is owned by Spedeworth. -
I think you are getting a few crossed wires here. The first meeting back at Odsal was under covid restrictions with a crowd limit of 4,000. This sold out as we had been waiting nearly 25 years to get back there. Later that year the F1 World Final was held with a crowd of possibly 10k, but that was not the norm. As I said in my other post, F1 meetings would pull crowds of 3-5k on average. The other meetings that don't involve F1s have much smaller attendances. F1 drivers do not pay to enter, they actually receive start money and also each driver gets 3 additional mechanics/family in free. The other formulas 'pay to race' but these are the meetings with the smaller crowds.
-
It's such a big stadium that it's hard to estimate, but 10k is very ambitious. I would say the average attendance for an F1 meeting would be around 3-5k. Bigger meetings obviously drag a few more, maybe 6-7k, but the only time it might have reached 10k since the reopening would have been the 2021 World Final. Sadly for the promoters, it was their turn to host the WF again this season, but instead of having the opportunity for a big payday in the best stadium they have now had to hire Northampton for the weekend instead.

It's all about the money !! In 1997, both Stock Cars and Speedway were kicked out of Odsal by the Bulls as the Super League had recently come into existence and Sky were throwing money at it, so they no longer needed the rental income. Plans for a fully enclosed 'Superdome' were published, which obviously would have made motorsports unfeasible. From 2012 to 2017, the Bulls went into administration 3 times, also dropping out of the Super League in 2014, and the 3rd one ended in liquidation. The Bulls that exist now are a completely new entity formed in 2017. During that first period of administration the RFL had to step in and purchase the leasehold on the stadium to help keep the club afloat. At the end of the 2019 season, they were still struggling financially and could no longer afford the rent so they moved out to Dewsbury for 2 seasons, leaving the RFL with an empty stadium. During the winter of 2020, the last Stock Car promotion to run at Odsal (Startrax), negotiated a return to Odsal with the RFL and made agreement with the Bulls to come back in with them. Allegedly, this was very beneficial to the Bulls, as rumour is that they had fallen out with the Dewsbury chairman and were going to be homeless in 2021. Since the return, the pitch has never met the minimum size specified in the rule book, but the RFL seemed happy to overlook this. However, now they have been 'promoted' back to the Super League, it has become more of an issue. Unfortunately for Stock Car racing, this promotion means the Bulls will be far better off financially, and it also coincides with the Bulls taking over the leasehold on the stadium from the RFL, giving them far more control over what happens. Despite the Stock Car promoters still having several years on the lease agreement, they are no longer welcome at Odsal, and I believe legal proceedings have taken place, but the rumour is that this was more about compensation than any possible return. The fact is, that without Startrax reopening Odsal in 2021 (a massive gamble as we were still under Covid restrictions at the time), the Bulls would not be playing there now, and would certainly not have been in the position to be rejoining the Super League. Then their fans wonder why all stock car fans are wishing for them to get relegated, go bust, or both !!

Because the new stand on the pits turn has supporting legs that are very close to the outer edge of the track. The likelihood of a stock car going over the fence is far less than that of a speedway rider, and even if they did they would be protected by the car they were in. I know that riders clearing fences doesn't happen often, but it does happen, and therefore the risk could not be taken.

DaveWayne replied to RoundTheBoards's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Nobody did. Sadly, the stock car promoter was ready for retirement so allegedly gave up his remaining lease for a sweetener. Had he held out on his further year, both speedway and greyhounds could have also continued in 1998 and the administrators would have been forced to advertise it for sale as a 'going concern'. As a stock car fan I will never forgive him for this.
