What kind of track is that Zuidbroek ? Speedway or grass track ? -
Yes Paul Muchene was (at least half) British, but either his mother or father was Kenyan. The bizzare thing about his fatal accident I seem to remember that the collision happened with another African rider (not that there are that many speedway riders with African roots). I can't remember the name but I am pretty certain that it was a young South African. Perhaps someone can either confirm or correct this, please. Anyone remember that South African rider's name?

You're welcome! It would be great to know even more about the brief history of speedway in New Guinea. After all, it is only about 30 years since they did race there, so the riders, promoters and people who attended those events must still be around. Anyone out there who knows more ?

Hi Puma, that was Kevin McDonald, the Papua New Guinea champion of 1974, 1975 and 1976 ! He was born in Melbourne on December 31, 1956, but grew up and lived 20 years in Port Moresby. Speedway started there in the early 1970's and Kevin McDonald was the most talented of the local riders. Several Australian riders, mainly from Queensland and the Northern Territory rode in Papua New Guinea, and McDonald also rode in a few meetings in Australia in the mid-1970's. He was quite good, twice finishing as the runner-up in the Australian Northern Territory Championship (1975 and 1976). Together with fellow New Guinean Garnet Thistlethwaite they came to England in 1977 or 1978. As far as I know Thistlethwaite only had second half outings in the UK, but McDonald was an instant success and signed for Newcastle Diamonds in 1978. He rode for them in just three matches, (3M-11R-15P-3B-18TP-6.55CMA), when he suffered a bably broken left thigh, that unfortunately ended his very promising speedway career. In the 1977/78 season McDonald even rode in the world championship qualifying rounds, to the best of my knowledge the only Papua New Guinean ever to do so. He entered via the Australian rounds, qualifying from the Queensland Final at Bundaberg, where he finished 2nd, before being eliminated in the second round (Northern Zone Final) in Sydney finishing joint 11th with 4 points.

It works for Rugby Union, and see how this sport has progressed since they invented a World Cup tournament in 1989. Speedway would be well advised to copy much of what is done in Rugby Union. Why are You against Scotland and Wales (and possibly Ireland) as stand alone national teams in the world cup ? Scotland has already contested Speedway World Team Cup Rounds in the past !
-
Instead of Great Britain, You could have three separate national teams England, Scotland and Wales. By the way, are there any Irish riders around these days? (Or at least some with Irish forefathers?)

As far as I know the track in Riga is still there, but not used anymore. There was a speedway meeting held there only a few years ago. I wonder why the Latvians do not try to establish this capital city track as a second venue for the sport in Latvia? Are Daugavpils afraid of the rivalry?
-
It was a permanent speedway track in that Amsterdam Olympic Stadium, not a temporary one. They had staged speedway there on an a more or less annual basis before.

Rode for England on their tour of South Africa in the 1956/7 Test Series.

Dutch & Belgium News 2008
Bavarian replied to DutchGrasstrack's topic in International World of Speedway
@DutchGrasstrack But as far as I know there has never been any other fence at Blijham and it did not seem to be a problem in the eyes of the KNMV for all those years. Now all of a sudden it is - can't help it, but this looks like personal revenge to me. By the way, do You know what actually happened this year with that dispute between the KNMV and the track racing committee members who resigned mid-season? Does this have anything to do with it? -

Why ??? Is it politics, some kind of revenge for what has happened this year ??? -
Speedway World Cup 2008
Bavarian replied to JanusMillard's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Denmak has the advantage of having Ole Olsen doing all he can FOR HIS country! Unfortunately speedway is suffering from it. I remember the last time the SWC Finals were held in Denmark it was a huge disappointment compared to Poland the year before, especially the poor attendances and total lack of atmosphere and excitement for the early rounds. Sweden is long overdue to get the World Cup Finals, and knowing the quality of the swedish speedway tracks, this would be the best thing for the SWC ! -

Strong British Team, could be able to challenge the Poles today - I wouldn't be surprised to see them win. Even on a big quarter mile oval as is Abensberg. I don't think any of the Polish team riders have ridden this track before, but some of the Brits have, and Oakes knows it very well from previous visits. I hope our German boys can beat the Czechs for third place. I say: 1st GB, 2nd PL, 3rd GER, 4th CZ

Polish Ekstraliga 16th September
Bavarian replied to Mateusz's topic in International World of Speedway
It shows that You don't know Polish speedway and Polish fans. If this is not important, than nothing else is. Ask anyone in Bydgoszcz ... -
Bundesliga Play-Off Final is at Landshut on the afternoon of October 3 (National Holiday in Germany). Landshut is easy to reach from Munich via train (about 60km away). You will probably have to take a taxi from the train station to get out to the speedway track at Ellermuhle, which is about 5km out of Landshut.

Brothers, Artem is still a teenager. -
Poland did not produce a world champion in the past decade, and that was their high time. Gollob is still the best, but he's not good enough. At the moment there is not the same quality of young riders coming though in Poland than in the past ten or fifteen years. Just look how many (few) Poles are in this year's world U-21 final. I'm sorry but the chances for a Polish world champion are not improving. Seems there could be a Danish dominance just around the corner, something we had in the mid to late 1980's.
