  1. I meant it as a cold statistic - which is factually and mathmatically correct. As part of the championship would not be crazy to say the least.
  2. I dont suppose there would be 24 pages of comment on the refs decision if this had been the first GP of the season - yet it would have had the same effect on the World Championship result.
  3. According to the web - New Cross was smaller than Wimbledon - just 262 yards. Did that rule come in after it closed??
  4. HEY. . . Riders wanted for meetings at Lydd - one meeting this Saturday - look at - http://www.facebook.com/groups/181049714047/ for details. . .
  5. I recall one with Stan Tebby in. None of the riders had crash helmets and Stan had a fag in his mouth!
  6. If we are talking about number sevens - what about Mike Coomber?? 1963 or 64 I think. He made speedway look very difficult - if you see what I mean.
  7. I suspect most people on here havent got much of a clue - me included Dont forget - Programme artwork and printing costs Rider signing fees Rider traveling expenses Business Rates?? Water rates for normal dwellings cost a fortune in the West Country - must be a lot for the track Rained off meetings And probably a lot more. If this successful business is up for sale where are all the takers in the crowd??
  8. I think the shape of the last track had a lot to do with the standard of racing rather than the class of the riders. It looked incredibly awkward to ride - does anyone agree??
  9. Lionel was involved with Iwade as long ago as 1976 - and possibly before. He used to write the times the riders at the practise sessions on a blackboard with chalk. I dont recall him ever mentioning having been a rider. steve
  10. Can't speak for VT - but I swapped badges with Igor Plechanov at Wimbledon around 1968.
  11. Also Rye House - Ace of Herts Trophy 1969 - 7 points - 5 rides Rye House - Rayments Rose Bowl 1969 - 6 points - 5 rides Rye House - RH v Ipswich 1970 3 points - 3 rides Rye House - Lea Valley Park Trophy 1971 6 points - 5 rides
  12. Have you got the dates of the other matches featured??
  13. White City stuff here. . . http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=74189
  14. John Hibbern (or Hibben) - Im pretty sure.
  15. Pretty sure Nigel and Eric Boocock were on Question of Sport in early 70's - the subject of where you have to guess the personality(s) from dodgy filming - if you get me. . .
  16. Pretty sure the flood was September 68. There used to be markers on the wall showing the water depth - wonder if they are still there . . . Re the trophy meetings - cant remember if it was the Internationale or the Laurels - but there was a very nice large shield presented to the winner - but it was usually kept at the stadium in a cabinet afterwards. I wonder what happened to that . . .
  17. Would Emil really dive when he knew there was the possibility of being hit by Jason (and his bike) at 60mph??
  18. Sorry Tracy - 70-1 not NR. - or lets say not his bike or face mask.
  19. Well he was at the California reunion a few months ago. If you send me your email address I can send you a pic of him sitting on a very nice chrome JAP . . . steve
  20. Interesting that most people seem to like big tracks and most these have disappeared - new tracks seem to be getting even smaller! Are crowds getting what they want??
  21. There was a Dons junior with this name around this period. I think the Steve of the famous Collins' family would have been too young anyway . . .
  22. Almost correct. - After speedway he was working from a little shed in his back garden doing speedway engine tuning for many riders including Barry Briggs. I think he got frustrated after a while with his pressure of work - as you always have to say yes to meet riders' deadlines. I think he was also frustrated by the quality of the workmanship of the brand new (2 valve) engines coming from the Jawa factory. Quite a few riders had new engines rebuilt before using them. He also used to say some of the new parts were so badly machined they were partly worn out when they arrived. He suddenly decided - that's it - and went for a non pressure job (postman) and gave up his valuable skills. I recall my father seeing him riding to work on a moped wearng a tatty much-used speedway helmet.
  23. Does look incredibly like him - but not possible - He rode a Jap in Rotrax frame in 1970 and pic 70 - 1 is a Jawa frame. And he joined Rayleigh in 1970 after the away match at Reading . . .
