  7. Hit the nail on the head Rach..... first and foremost.... before you can even think about changing anything..you will have to get rid of Van Strattens glove puppet PETER MORRISH. a complete waste of space that cannot make a decision to save his life! Then we can start looking forward !

    HACKNEY HAWKS

Sadly thats seems to be how speedway is (not) promoted these days, the amount of people in Newport who say we had a speedwya team once or where is the stadium is unbelievable! They all do there shopping a 5 minute walk from the stadium as well! At least we do have some signs up now. This might be stupid, infact it almost certainly is, what going into this new stadium when the olympics ahve finished? Sod all I would guess so why not use it for speedway? Ok, it'll never be full, half full, well not much passed the front row realistically BUT in a plush stadium people may just go an watch speedway there for £13. It coudl then be used for the GP, the 4TT the British Final, Riders Championships and anything else they can fit in with the avaliable dates if it all starts to work. Obviously this requires the government allowing a promoter the rent the stadium on the cheap but surely very little money from a speedway promoter once a week is better than nothing form anyone? very good point SCB, the stadium i think they are planning would be far too big for a league team, even elite league, but bigger meetings would maybe an option. BUT As i have said elsewhere on another thread, the possibilities of say the Hockey stadium that is planned would be ideal, or maybe one of the other arenas they plan as part of the whole complex.

Beat me to it CH......saw it on the Ten O Clock news....boo hoo but...... ideas spring to mind about the other areas they need around there...Hockey stadium, etc...... but i don't think the 80,000 Seater will host a team do you? maybe a GP venue....but it will be like the old White City...60,000 capacity and filled to the brim with air!!! But never say never! Olympics in London.......hmmmm...need to be alot of changes to the old place!
  12. very interesting photo Mr.121, and its one i have never seen before, best bet is to contact Norbold for this, and i would be very interested in what he says. NORBOLD....need your expertise here.
  13. great photo's HG, are they yours, ? and the little girl.....it says underneath that its a forum favourite.....hmmmmm
  14. Aub Lawson? Now you're talking! His averages in Britain were as follows: Wembley: 1939: 5.70 West Ham: 1948: 8.62 1949: 8.88 1950: 8.28 1951: 10.12 Norwich: 1953: 8.60 1954: 7.80 1955: 8.27 1956: 6.91 1957: 12.40 1958: ? Haven't been able to find this one. Grateful for help! 1959: 10.13 1960: 9.97 The above are all actual averages, not CMAs. In addition his World Championship Final placings were: 1939: 16th 1949: 7th= 1950: 4th 1951: 8th= 1953: 8th = 1954: 14th 1955: Qualified but was unable to ride. 1957: 4th= 1958: 3rd (His one and only tractor ride - he was over 40 years old) 1959: 4th= 1960: 13th= In the Stenners World Rankings in the early post war years he was ranked: 1948: 4 1949: 4 1950: 2 1951: 3 1952: 5 1953: 6 What a rider! wow! when i grow up i want to be just like Norbold...ever thought of writng a book mate!
  15. No chance, Looked at this site back in 1999, they have no intention of having speedway, and never will, and besides Rye House is only 3.5 miles down the road...now that would be a local derby! I have heard alot about there being an approach to use this stadium for the last 3/4 years, but haven't a clue who is behind it. wait and see what happens with Long Eaton beofre this is pursued Looked closely at Swaffham on our search for the Norwich site, there wasn't a dog track there, or not one i could see, unless it is under the stock car track now! certainly didn't see any kennels or starting traps, but then the whole place looks newly built. give us a clue to where they are!!!! Too far for me!! North of the border!! outta my area! i'd have to speak to my friends for a "room for the night!"
  16. no problem...just don't stop writing these excellent books, and i won't stop publicising them ah, maybe this is why it isn't in my so called "head of speedway knowledge", i have flicked through this publication after buying my "signed by the author" copy at High Beach, but haven't actually read any of it yet due to still trying to finish the "Speedway in East Anglia" publication that is part of an on going project that i have a hand in.... Still, as you say, we should never say never, because if we did, Wimbledon would never have come back, but I think it will be an uphill battle. Have you thought about Yarmouth???? hmmmm...Yarmouth...hang on, thats at the back of the book i am currently reading, i'll answer this one when i get to that particular page, but the Author is such a Historian that he likes to give you so many details and information in his books that they are not easy to read quickly!! who wrote this one......oh.... ok that explains why it has gripped me!
  17. no, can't help there either. and cannot say i've heard of BAGS. i am presuming its the BRITISH ASSOC OF GREYHOUND somethings! i'll have a ask around.
  18. dunno where you got that from!!! ok i stand corrected, i should have consulted my speedway in london book before saying it, but i wasn't aware there was two stadiums over in Romford, and not being familiar with the area, i didn't think to look ah..now that man gets in my way again! interesting thoughts...CB was on the turnstiles the first meeting, but as for AK,...i'll ask my contacts
  19. i had a quick look at Catford around two years ago, whilst on the Wimbledon project, and first thoughts is the track would be very small, actually probably too small. and there is a lot of housing around there so we brushed over it, although interestingly, it is also owned by The GRA, and managed by the same people that are at Wimbledon. Wimbledon was a better option at the time as it needed no motor racing licenece with the stock cars there.
  20. Sadly Harringey became a Sainsburys, and a DIY superstore but i believe the train station still carries the name. Romford is still there, and like Walthamstow, and Catford, are simply just Greyhound stadiums. As you say, maybe with some good publicity, Hackney (London) could have been a success, and then maybe if they left the " Hackney" title, it would have had more success, but then some of these places just get that one chance, pretty much like we have faced up at Norwich with The Local Council there.
  21. See your point Kevin, maybe all those speedway fans of the east of town have upped sticks and moved to more favourable speedway areas, like so many of us have. such a shame that it has come to it thou.
  22. as i say above, there would be alot of work needed, not just by the speedway promotor, but by the stadium as the lamp stands that grace the inside of the dog track would need to be removed first, and re located on the outside of the dog track. then the whole track that is tarmaced needs lifting, as for a pit area, well, that would need looking into. The greyhounds run every night of the week and attracts a lot of people, with links to two other stadiums each night, betting, plus gate income, could be a problem to equal in revenue for a speedway promotor. On the plus side, it would attract a very large crowd, having so many closed tracks like Hackney, Harringey, West Ham, Romford all within easy travelling distances, a very good road network in the area, and excellent public transport links from central London and Essex, and the GRA made a hell of alot of sacrifices at Wimbledon. so its not all doom and gloom, with Victor Chandler now involved in the speedway world, there is still a possibilty.
  23. Victor Chandlers, new sponsors of the Coventry Bees? I wonder if the speedway bug has caught them good and proper yet? come to think of it, yes, there was a few VC sponsors boards around....hmmmmm now as i said..nothings impossible!! memo to sean........go back to walthamstow and stay sober this time!
