  1. I have a couple of photographs of the very recent New Zealand Veterans 2008 Re-union. I can name 5 or 6 of the guys Have a look and see if we can get all the names The photos are on the Defunct site Veterans page
  2. Gordon Byers at 96 is the oldest surviving rider. He started riding at Middlesbrough in 1928 and when Newcastle openend in 1929 he rode there before moving from his native north east to Leeds and then on to greater things at Wembley. He was a member of the England side which toured NZ and Australia in the early 30's. If you would like to buy a copy of the book priced at £9.99 +£2.00pp send me an email jskinner06@btinternet.com

  5. A new book just hitting the shelves is A Lions Roar written by Liz Palmer (Niece of Gordon Byers) Liz has chronicled the career of her uncle Gordon. Gordon is now 96 yrs old which makes him the oldest speedway rider by a mile. I am happy to act as a go-between for anyone wanting to buy the book £9,99 + £2.00 postage....   6. I have on the Miscellaneous page of the defunct site pictures of the oldest rider (Gordon Byers) he won the first ever race at Newcastles Brough Park back in 1929. I also have a picture of Riskit Riley (I would like some info on him for the website) The 3rd oldest rider is reported to be Jack Tidbury (I would like a picture and some info on him) Hope you can help
  7. John, Sid King was not a rider but seems to have been fairly well known in the VMCC and restoration circles, he restored a number of Brooklands machines as well as early Dirt Track and Speedway. I understand he worked for Vic Martin (as per the bike) in 1949-50 which is where the passion for all things JAP came from Hope this is helpful Jeremy If you want to see pictures of the Bikes visit either of my websites named below and follow links for Bikes Page 5

I received this email via my Bikes pages on my websites Dear Sir, I thought you may be interested to learn that Cheffins Auctioneers have consigned a number of machines and spares from the estate of the late Sid King and amongst other things will be auctioning on the 18th October 2008 a 1928 Dirt Track Douglas plus another dismantled (restored parts ready for re-assembly), a c1930Rudge 4 valve speedway machine, c1932 Commerford JAP speedway machine and a c1935 Martin JAP speedway machine, there are also a qty of JAP engines.   14. On my Newcastle website I have a picture of a 1920's Indian. Dave Gifford (remember him?) has been in touch about the bike and its possible original owner Giffy says: is it the bike once used by Kiwi Spencer "Smokey" Stratton? I understand that Stratton became Promoter or team manager at Newcastle after he quit riding and was killed in a road crash coming back from a meeting at Workington? Can you verify or give me any additional info? So! can anyone shed any light email me John

  19. I heard via the Newcastle History Site that Jack Winstanley has recently passed away. Jack was a member of Newcastle's PL winning side in 1964. Has anyone any pictures or stories involving Jack

  22. Whilst checking on the riding career of David Bargh, I found he rode in the 70's, 80's and 90's (he is still riding now in NZ) so davids career spanned 3 decades in UK and 4 decades worldwide. I bet you know riders who did more!

  24. Does anyone know whether David rode for any other UK clubs or was he exclusively Newcastle
  25. I have recived a couple of pictures of George. They will be on the Newcastle speedway history site when it comes back on line.
