The big difference, I think you'll find, is that Roy remained English UNTIL he moved to New Zealand (quitting the British scene), whereas Bob had represented New Zealand for several years while still racing in the UK. Therefore, I don't think that Roy could be classed as a New Zealander racing in Britain. The same could be same of Tommy Sweetman, assuming he did become a naturalized New Zealander... Steve

Unless my eyes deceive me, 250 looks like a very young (and very slim) Fryer! Steve
-
Yep, Neil was an Aussie. One of my faves at Plough Lane... Steve
-
237. Well, he has David Bargh's face mask, and a kiwi on his shoulder, so I think it might be DB... :-) Boy, do I feel stupid for getting 233 wrong; that's what I get for not actually looking at it. Steve

Okay norbold, it looks like I may have made a faux pas... Jimmy Tannock did compete in the 1967 New Zealand Final. I may have jumped the gun a little, because even though it was still predominantly for New Zealanders in those days, so did Doug Templeton. Anyway, here are two more that you forgot : :-) Charlie Blacklock (Harringay), who was killed at Christchurch in 1935. John Garmson, killed at Nottingham in 1931. Steve

Sorry Frigbo, I think you'll find that Mick McKeon was an Aussie. Glad you remembered throbbin' Robin Hampton, though! Fore those young'uns on the list who may not know, Roy Williams was only an alias; he also rode in Britain under his real name of Bernie Lagrosse. Others were : Paul Church Mark DeKok Bob Duckworth Ron Johnston Jimmy Tannock Greg Williamson Steve

Yep, that's Keith Bloxsome in 213... 229 - Larry Ross 230 - Siggy, Lance King, Rick Miller 231 - Jimmy Mac leading leggy Lars Hammarberg and Borje Ring. Not 100% about the guy in red, but it looks like Peter Carr. 232 - Still lookin' 233 - Crumpy leading Shawn 234 - From l to r - DJ, Shawn, Wiggy Steve
-
Yep, that's the one... Steve

I also have what appears to be confirmation of the fourth rider in 88. I thought it looked like Peter Carr, and on checking, I found that in Heat 2 of the Belle Vue-Sheffield BL Match on August 21, 1982, Peter Carr finished last behind Brown, McMillan and White. Steve

Thank you so much!!! Boy, that was driving me crazy; it took me a long while to get there... Oh, and did we ever get any closer to solving 90? Like many others, it looks like Sam to me, but if, as you say, you really don't know who it is, why are you so sure it's not? He doesn't look that tall, so what about Colin Cook or Guy Wilson? Do you know when it was taken? Steve

I'm total agreement with speedy guy. They are all English except for Vandenberg. Steve

This 193 is really bugging me... I know you're probably thinking I'm just having some wild stabs, but I want an answer! There are mixed clues in the pic. The photo is not that clear, and looks very much like a mid-to-late 70's shot, but the bib ruins all that. It is Shawn's bike. The style doesn't look familiar, although it is taken from a different angle. I know he usually used a white Bell Moto III helmet, but the leathers look very much like Zenon's... Steve

193 - Mark Fiora? Steve

I've done some research, and I've found the answer to 3: From left to right, it's Jack Young, Geoff Mardon, Gerry Hussey, and Briggo. I just found the photo in one of my scrapbooks... With 1, I would say that is Reg Trott, and possibly Jon Erskine with Sverre. I'm pretty sure that is also Sverre in 12. 5 looks very much like Wally Green, 8 is Cliff Watson, and 15 could be a young Norman Hunter. Steve
-
1 - Definitely Sverre Harrfeldt leading. 2 - Antonin Kasper leading, probably Les McGillivray behind. 3 - That is Briggo on the inside. I have a suspicion that is Malcolm Craven in front, and the other Wimbledon rider could be Cyril Brine or Dom Perry. 6 - Bert Roger Leading, with Jack Parker on the inside. Not sure about the guy at the back. 12 - I agree with Brian Leonard. 14 - Looks like Knutty, with Jimmy Gooch in 2nd. 16 - It's Reg Luckhurst. I'll do some more research... Steve
-
191 - Is that Alan Mason behind Pierre? 194 - Looks like J.D. with Leif Wahlmann 198 - Could be Alf Busk in red Steve

Canadian,african,austrian Riders In British League
chunky replied to Puma23's topic in Years Gone By
Sorry I'm a bit late, but there are three other Austrians: Toni Pilotto Hec Haslinger Joe Weichlbauer Haslinger and Weichlbauer may have ridden under other licences, but were both Austrians. Steve -
No. 1 looks suspiciously like Banksy, and I would say that No. 2 was Paul Whittaker. No. 13 could well be Tony Langdon. I'll do some more research. Steve

Maxine quit racing in the early 90's after a couple of injuries. She was really good on the grass, beating many of the better guys, but she never really excelled at speedway. After a year or two with the Hackney junior team. she went back solely to the grass. Strangely enough, I used to work with Maxine at Merton Council! Don't know if she's still there... Steve
