Report by Peter White CHRIS HOLDER won his third NSW Championship in a row with consummate ease on Boxing Night. He rode a 15-point maximum in his five qualifying heats and then outpaced Kozza Smith, Jason Doyle and James Holder in the final. Holder won all his races from the start or around the first corner and although Doyle and Smith were able to stay with him whenever they clashed, they were never likely to beat him. Holder was always going to win this title barring mechanical failure as he was clearly a cut above this field both going into the meeting and during the meeting itself. In fact his only real challenge this season will come away from his Sydney home when he travels interstate for the Australian Championship rounds. Doyle was the best of the rest through the heats, finishing with 14 points after being beaten only by Holder. But in the final Kozza Smith (12 points) rode an absolute blinder on the first two laps to hold right onto Holder's back wheel before Holder pulled away to win by five metres at the chequered flag. This pushed Doyle back to third place throughout the race and in the title result. It was a stirring performance from Smith that will warm the hearts of King's Lynn fans and leave the Aussie selectors red-faced after they shoved him down to fourth reserve for the upcoming Australian Championship – a disgusting decision. James Holder (11 points) was a deserving fourth finalist but never looked like getting the better of the top three. Surprising non-finalists were the Herne brothers (Lee on 10 points and Jay on 9) and the highly-rated Richard Sweetman (10) who fell in one heat and cost himself all chance. The Herne brothers were always in the thick of the action but were simply outpaced by the top-end riders. A really good performance came from 16-year-old state title debutant Sam Masters who is fresh out of junior speedway and scored a very impressive nine points. Credit must also go to his fellow teenager Hugh Skidmore who made a successful comeback from a badly broken leg to score six points. Skidmore is not available for Britain this year (2008) but he and Masters are riders for clubs to note in 2009. Skidmore should be particularly interesting to promoters as he will have EEC partiality. His grandmother and mother are Dutch and he has recently been granted a Dutch passport. The NSW title was held on a fine night under starry skies at Gosford on the central coast before a healthy Boxing Night attendance. Boxing Night is always the big puller for promoters in New South Wales in particular. If the weather holds and you can't draw a bigger- than-average crowd on this night then you are never going to pull a crowd. The meeting was promoted by the Speedway Riders' Association of NSW. NSW CHAMPIONSHIP Heat points: Chris Holder 15, Jason Doyle 14, Kozza Smith 12, James Holder 11, Lee Herne 10, Richard Sweetman 10, Jay Herne 9, Sam Masters 9, Hugh Skidmore 6, Tim Heffernan 6, Ty Platt 6, Ricky Wallace 5, James Bevan 3, John Gurney 2, Michael Dyer 2, Lyndon Kinsela 0. Emerging youngster Richard Sweetman gave his career prospects a huge boost, by winning his first national title, the Australian Long Track championship at Blayney Showground. The small town located 40 kilometres west of Bathurst, staged it's second meeting, and it's first national title on a track that stood up pretty well considering the rain that had bombarded the area for a couple of days prior to racing. Indeed there were a number of occasions on the drive up to from Sydney as to whether this meeting would take place, but with only just the odd quick shower during the day Blayney in the main escaped the huge downpours in nearby towns such as Bathurst. While the track was a little wet on top for the practice it was quite firm underneath and the hard working officials of the Panorama Motor Cycle club are to be congratulated for staging a great meeting under difficult circumstances. Unfortunately there were a few falls during the day, with a couple of riders perhaps trying a little too hard, rather than any problem with the track as the major reasons for the falls. Sweetman was the most consistent rider in the four heats of the 500cc Long Track Championship, with many riders dropping out after falls and bike problems. Sweetman managed to avoid any major dramas and took top four placings (with one victory) in each of his four heats. He certainly looks a good prospect for the future on this form. Second place on the day went to Sydney rider Lee Herne, who was unfortunate in his first heat, after a machine failure on the final lap, saw him pushing home the best part of 500 metres to gain 7th place and 13 points that were ultimately crucial to his second place in the championship. Third place on points was Tim Heffernan. It was also a maiden Australian Championship win in the Sidecars for the experienced combination of Chris Pym and Adam Constable after a competitive 4 race series which saw Pym record two heat wins, a second and a third placing, to win the title from Victorians Warren Monson and Devon Gates, with the favourites Darrin Treloar and Justin Plaistead relegated to third. Treloar won his first two heats, before a second place open the door for Pym in the final race, which saw Treloar pull up with motor troubles while lying in 3rd place. Pym was a really proud man at the presentation and couldn't quite believe what he and partner Constable had achieved. A few riders unfortunately were treated for injuries on track, before being taken away in the ambulance for observation. These included Dirt Track sidecar competitors passenger Neil Hancock, and rider Ian Collettt, after a coming together in event number 46, and Kozza Smith who fell in the final of the 250cc 2 Stroke. Luke Gough who is known to many speedway fans, won perhaps the most competitive class of the day, the up to 450cc 4 stroke championship, where 40 riders competed over four heats per round. Scott Smith Wins Golden Helmet - Posted 4 November, 2007 Scott Smith added his name to an illustrious list of previous winners when he swept all before him and won the Ivan Mauger Golden Helmet meeting. Smith was the only Queenslander to reach the final of this national event and came up against Ty Proctor (Vic), James Holder (NSW) and Ty Platt (NSW). Smith led the final all the way, with Proctor rounding up Platt and Holder in the first turn. Holder took Platt on the second lap, then closed the gap on Proctor as Smith drew further ahead . Holder and Sam Taylor bumped together in the first semi-final, with Taylor coming to grief against the fence, The referee ruled it a "racing incident"with no-one to blame, for a complete restart. However Taylor had a knee wound which required attention, and he withdrew. Proctor won the rerun from Holder, with impressive Sam Masters third . Smith nailed the second semi-final after an early tussle with Platt. Potential-packed Mitchell Davey, who was equal top scorer with Proctor in the heats, crossed for third, with Alan Rivett fourth. The programme featured plenty of very fast, close racing on a somewhat slick track. The highlight race of the night was the close-quarter duel between Smith and Proctor in Heat 10, with the two passing and repassing each other and Proctor taking the win. Smith opened his account with a win over Holder, but the tables were turned when they met again in Round 2. Holder also pushed Masters and Rivett to very close finishes. Sidecar honours went to Steve Taylor/Daniel Newman who followed a first round loss to Robbie Wilson/Cameron Bell with four straight wins, including the final. Wilson missed his last heat race because of engine problems, but was able to rectify this in time to finish second in the final after briefly passing and leading Taylor. Bob Hill/Nick Bain were third in the final, with Craig Mitchell/Troy Packman suffering engine failure on the third lap. Tyson Nelson won each of his four encounters with Darcy Ward in the 350cc section. Kade Smith topped the support solos, but not without a first race defeat by Harley Horwood. Sixteen junior solo riders fought out a qualifying round for the State Championship to be held at Gold Coast on 8 December. The eight qualifiers and their points are: Nick Morris 15, Darcy Ward 13, Mathew Day 12, Harley Brigden 12, Jake Allen 10, Tory Bellamy 10, Josh Slockee 10 and Zaine Kennedy 8. These riders competed in a separate competition in the main programme, with Darcy Ward winning the final. Nick Morris came through into second, with Harley Brigden third and Mathew Day fourth. Golden Helmet Points: Ty Proctor (Vic) 11, Mitchell Davey (Qld) 11, Sam Masters (NSW) 10, Scott Smith (Qld) 10, James Holder (NSW) 8, Alan Rivett (Qld) 7, Sam Taylor (Qld) 5, Ty Platt (NSW) 4, Elliott Myers (NSW) 2, Anthony Perks (NSW) 2, Ashley Cathcart (Qld) 1, Nathan Apps (Qld) 1. 1st Semi-final: 1. Golden Helmet Line-Up for Gold Coast, Sat. 3 November This year's Ivan Mauger Golden Helmet competition is a one-off National Golden Helmet event unlike the usual International Series. Mauger has been busy establishing speedway in Malaysia and hasn't been able to devote the time to bring out foreign riders. The meeting still promises to be a cracker, with a strong field of 12 local and interstate riders. Victorian Ty Proctor makes his second Gold Coast appearance, after an impressive debut earlier this year. Townsville's Mitchell Davey returns after making an impact on the Boothy meeting, with fellow North Queenslander Ashley Catchcart joining him. James Holder (NSW), has just returned from a stint in England where he has been signed up by Isle of Wight for next year. He will be aiming to have his name on the Golden Helmet. Second placegetter in our last meeting, Ty Platt (NSW) will start as one of the favourites. Others coming from south of the border are Sam Masters (Newcastle) and Anthony Perks (Quirindi). Leading the home charge are Sam Taylor, who was runner-up in the recent Malaysian Open, evergreen Alan Rivett and (hopefully) Scott Smith, who will be preparing for his assault on the Qld Title at our 8 December meeting.Making up the 12 are Elliott Myers (NSW) and Nathan Apps, with Todd Groves and Harley Horwood as reserves. 350cc racing will also be programmed, and junior solo riders will be out to secure a place in next month's Qld Title, to be run in conjunction with the senior solo championship. Sidecars and support solos complete what promises to be another night of spectacular racing, starting at 6.30pm, and juniors getting under way at 5pm. Courtsey from Gavin Elmes. Regards.

Boothy Meeting Results - Posted 15 October, 2007 A good crowd was on hand to witness a night of spectacular racing, punctuated with spills, on an initially tricky track resulting from torrential rain the previous evening. The only injury was a broken collarbone, suffered by 16 year-old Aaron Stewart who clouted the fence in the first solo race and was pitched headlong across the finishing line. Prior to the commencement of the main programme, children lined the main straight and released hundreds of blue balloons in memory of Dave Booth. Mason Campton (NSW - top picture) won the Dave Booth Trophy for juniors, from a large field of riders from Townsville to Victoria. Runner-up in the final was last year's winner, Clinton Dennis (Qld), with Taylor Poole (NSW) third and Dylan Blain (Qld) fourth. Poole was first away, with Dennis briefly passing Campton, before Campton got the better of both on the second lap. Campton took a heavy tumble in his opening ride, but was undaunted by this knock. Interest centred on the first 350cc competition staged at Labrador, as eight 14 & 15 yr-olds lined up for the coveted Dave Booth Memorial Shield, won at its inaugural staging last year by then World Solo Champion, Jason Crump. In keeping with Boothy's desire for junior development, the shield is now contested by the 350s. Recently crowned 250cc Australian Dirt Track Champion, Todd Kurtz (NSW- centre picture), led the final all the way, with Taylor Poole (NSW) second, Alex Davies (NSW) third and Clinton Dennis (Qld) fourth. Davies topped the qualifying points after dropping just one point to Poole, while Kurtz had dropped points to Poole (twice) and Davies. Local whizkid Darcy Ward had an indifferent night, while Tyson Nelson riding the "Boothy Bike" had his first 350cc races and reaped the benefits of experience. Josh Munro (Vic) hit the fence and barrel-rolled quite a distance, then sprang to his feet. Taylor Poole led the rerun of that event until throwing a chain just before the chequered flag. This cost him maximum heat points. The senior solo section of 12 riders was weakened by the withdrawal of Richard Sweetman (NSW), and then Sam Masters (NSW) blowing his engine at practice before the meeting. Reserve riders were drafted in and the support solo races cancelled after Brad Alleyn fell while leading their first event, bringing down Harley Horwood and Hector Crespo. This put Alleyn's and Crespo's bikes out of action. Veteran Alan Rivett returned to the track for the first time since last year's Boothy meeting and showed he'd lost none of his ability by progressing to the final. Mitchell Davey was in sizzling form until engine failure in his last heat, and then a fall while leading the semifinal, ruined his chances. Ty Platt (NSW) blitzed the heats and went straight into the final. Joining him was Josh Grajczonek who dropped his one point to Platt. Alan Rivett and Anthony Perks (NSW) qualified for the final after Steven Reid's tapes exclusion and Mitchell Davey's spill in the semifinal. Grajczonek (bottom picture), who is developing into a Labrador track specialist, lead the final until Rivett fell on the second lap and Perks laid his bike down. Again the North Queenslander bolted in the rerun, leaving Platt and Perks to pick up the minor placings. The best race of the night saw Davey come from fourth to first, as he and Perks screamed under Ashley Cathcart 25 metres from the flag, with Dakota North in hot pursuit. RESULTS: Dave Booth Trophy (Juniors): 1st Semifinal: 1. Mason Campton, 2. Clinton Dennis, 3. Harley Brigden, 4. Mathew Day. 2nd Semifinal: 1. Taylor Poole, 2. Dylan Blain, 3. Nick Morris, 4.
