King's Lynn V Lakeside Tues 31st Sky 7.30
moxey63 replied to Daniel Smith's topic in SGB Premiership Speedway League
Here we are, 15 years on from when SKY first started showing live speedway, and the total product is so discoloured. We have the same tired format used by SKY, the endless build-up to try to make what is about to happen seem really exciting and unmissable... and then we have the next two hours of bore-fest, the only exciting of whether the SKY studio would escape the winds or if the majority of the wafer-thin turn-out would be survive the next few days and collect their pensions. SKY decided to wait another three weeks to show the next live match, a decision that may be risky. Will the sport still exist then? Or is it a growing realism by them that they have paddled the sport as far as they are prepared and we are now at the beginning of their final attachment to speedway? The Match-Of-the-Week may indeed turn out to be a Match-of-the-Month... It ain't looking good. -
Think Peter Oakes' book probably just has the info from the Star's scores. It is only when you go further, delve into heat details etc, that the head-scratching begins. Thanks for the answers, guys.

Thanks customhouseregular! That was a quick reply! Cheers!!!!

Is there any kind speedway fan out there, who has details of the following: March 31st 1984, Stoke v Ornarna What scores did Ashley Pullen and Steve Bishop register? Speedway Star (in the score details) has them down as Pullen 7 pts and Bishop 3. But in the heat details, Pullen should be on 8 plus 1 and Bishop 2 plus 2. Any help will be appreciated. Many thanks!

It is worrying, the current speedway scene. We are a growing-old bunch of fans that are dangerously close to dragging speedway to the grave with us. A poll on this website signifies the typical age of a speedway fan, and there doesn't appear any rush by youngsters to break down the turnstiles. We have for so long been deluded that speedway is an hidden gem, that no one but us knows about. The belief that "I like it, so other people will," is what I held once upon a time. But, stand back for one moment... it is a small sport, lucky that the likes of SKY retain an interest, which glues once regular attendees to their armchairs instead of advancing to their local track. Apart from that, nothing I have seen over the past 10 or 15 years has made me believe the press remain intent on hiding speedway, for the purpose of denying it from taking fans away from other sports.
-
Come on fallas... if you weren't a speedway fan already, would you in your right mind be interested in a sport that is less than half a stop from the grave yard? Even in the glory days of the seventies, speedway was often left on the back burner by the media, when the sport really deserved the publicity. Forty years since, would you consider, as a person trying to sell a newspaper, a TV programme, would you consider putting a speedway-related story forward. I mean, we are getting beyond our selling place, especially when a recent petition to get Len Silver honoured fetched little more than one hundred sigs. That is where speedway rests right now... and that was the response from speedway fans (ones that are still alive). We are, I'm afraid, where we are...

Speedway Star & Classic Speedway Paper Quality
moxey63 replied to Dave Stummings's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
I love reading the old stuff... the recent articles in the Star, the regular supply of memories offered by Backtrack etc. But there is something that still seems too modern about trying to invite the 90s into the nostalgia trip... like it isn't that long ago for long-in-the-tooth fans (like me). The 90s may interests fans that arrived in the past 15 or 20 years... but, like the Kelvin Tatum piece recently, or a piece on, say, on Billy Hamill...they resemble photos that sit on the mantle piece at home. They are there, and every now and then you notice them. They aren't out of your mind's eye as such. For this, you would have to put them away, forget about them... and they would become more interesting, after decades of not seeing them. It is like when you were a child, a toy you thought you'd lost... was found. I could have been for weeks, but as a child, that was a lifetime. The old pictures, the ones from family occasions that are locked away in some cupboard upstairs.. these photographs are pawed over only on special occasions. Those photos are similar to speedway fans' memories, the stories from the 70s and 80s, of riders that have gone from our minds for generations until, like that old cigar box full of old photos, you come across them again. Witnessing them once more rebuilds the bridge to happier times. Right now, riders from the 90s haven't been retired long enough to cross that bridge. -
SKY had better watch it... they piss off speedway fans... and we will withdraw our vast support and shut them down. Full stop. We closed all those tracks, didn't we? When we withdrew our support... Imagine the power we'd wield, especially if those freeloaders who scrounge off the internet... actually paid their subs... .

Hi - unfortunately there wasn't/isn't much footage of the old Hyde Road, apart from that which is already out there, and which is mostly several generations old and seen better days. I do have footage from the old place, but you can find it on YouTube etc.

Before I go on... it should be "had never ridden a bike" not "had never rode a bike." But schools and education weren't as good in the olden days, I'm suppsoing. Now, there aren't that many riders who, in the 70s, turned up with a bike and were in the team within weeks. Probably they had some form of motorcycle experience before hand and had to progress through second halves. Can't see any person being good enough to warrant a team spot within weeks. Then again, the likes of Craig Cook, the Worralls (and many more) have managed to do so in this day of easier-to-ride machines and tracks. They have motorcycling backgrounds.
-
I don't "attempt to say," it's what I actually said. One of us may be right, the other wrong, and as we both are more likely to ride a mobility scooter than a speedway bike, we are throwing about opinions. It could be true what you say, bikes are harder to ride now... but I bet my dad could beat your dad! It's an argument that will never be resolved... unless you call The Myth-Busters and have done with it!
-
As somebody who watches from the extreme comfort of the living room floor, I can't imagine today's riders have as much difficulty in riding their heavily fashioned for comfort bikes more than the boys of the 70s and 80, even the 90s. In decades gone by, riders used to have to battle with their machines and track conditions, often being thrown about like some rodeo passenger. Nowadays, the boys don't appear to be able to control their machines on the smoothest of circuits. If they can't rev and go, they usually end up on one wheel.
-
That's alright. I am used to being shown up. The end of the day, there's is no answer to the question - Davey v Harris - and your need to post over 15,000 times on various topics, surely by now, tells you it's all about opinions. I saw Mr Davey at his peak... and have witnessed Mr Harris. I know who I class as the better rider, based on who they were up against at the time and what obstacles - opponents and injury-wise - lay before them. Please, there is no need to answer.. as there is no answer. Happy New Year!
-
Isn't the fact that many are answering the question posed, Davey vs Harris, draws some confusion about a rider (Davey) who was around 40 years ago, had his career ravaged by injury and didn't even make number one in his team, never mind regularly the top 40 of the national averages... how some people are arguing, that Mr Harris is actually better and has achieved more. The answer is simple: Davey had a lot more reputable names to fend off to get to number one, in days making a British Final was actually as difficult as actually lifting the title nowadays. Scott Nicholls is good... but half-a-dozen times as good as, say, Peter Collins (who won the British crown once).
-
NoDirection are regularly at the top of the charts, but that doesn't make them as good as say, Deacon Blue, who were often poor chartists.Davey often had Louis and Sanders to battle for points in the same team, whereas Harris is fielding against a completely weaker line-up at Coventry and beyond. I'd rather stick with Davey.
-
Alright people... just had some weird message, causing me to interrupt my Christmas... someone on here saying that Chris Harris is a better rider than Tony Davey. Come on guys... let's be serious. I know it's the time for fancy jumpers, those Santa hats... it's all a laugh. But.. and I know it was tongue in cheek... Harris better than Davey? It's like saying.. New Year is better than Christmas. The current Band Aid is better than the 1984 version... Carry on.... But I'm being kept informed.
-
The helmet was devalued towards the end, it had lived its life and was just a nonsense that got in the way of some riders, put out in the heat only because they had top scored for their team, gone were the monthly challenges of riders on form. You lost track of who actually held it toward the end of the competition. My memory was of Peter Collins perhaps being the longest-ever holder in the 70s, when you actually felt it a title worthy of holding. He retained it for two years or thereabouts. In 1979, a week before the Polish World Final, PC flew at the Shay and broke Eric Boocock's six year track record. He looked the bizz... but, alas, the bike he used and was set to use in the WF, well, it blew on big day warm-up and PC endured one of his worst finals of the eight (i think it was) he rode. Can't see there being a place for even a monthly Golden Helmet competition in modern day.

Speedway Star - Can I Have My Money Back?
moxey63 replied to Rob Lee's topic in Speedway News and Discussions
Only complaint I have re. the Star, Belle Vue results aren't as good as the olden days. -
Carter needed his tunnel-vision way to remain successful and reminds me a little of Nicki Pedersen because of this. A brilliant crowd-puller, Carter's last meeting, if I recall, saw him struggle in the meeting and only win a run-off to navigate a world semi at his home track. Maybe that memory tarnishes what he achieved as a speedway rider alone. He clearly had off-track problems and seemed less hungry on it.
-
Gundersen, it was reported, suffered something like 40 tape exclusions in 1984... in his 50-odd matches for the Heathens and open meetings. My sins... I am only reporting it how it was reported, before, and with my whole respect, you actually arrived on the scene but seem an expert on the era, barring being unaware tape exclusions counted as a ride.
-
Erik Gundersen endured about 40 tape exclusions in '84, and that was just BL competition. Didn't half knock his average about.
