Surely something must have happened at Wanganui - bad track conditions...suitable only for cars, riders struggled to get to grips with it...and at least some race winners? -

Elf International Series 2011

What a shambles!!! Post meeting publicity for this series has been abysmal. Nowhere can results be found for the last weekend at January 29 2011 Oceanview (Wanganui) nor for January 30 2022 Waikaraka Park. There are websites for both, so far as I can see Ocenaview is well out of date while Waikara Park (which directs to a new site) cannot be entered. -
Maybe because legal action cannot be taken against military venues operating under an international treaty? Pointless to object surely?

Has censorship struck! I am certain that 20 minutes ago from the time of this message there was a response from Steve Ribbons to various matters. Now it's gone. I cannot say I am surprised after reading some of the comments made in it. I even posted a small reply, which I have just taken down as it's not needed - there's nothing to reply to!

Ah yes! Steve Ribbons. Viva Espana!

LAKESIDE HAMMERS PRESS RELEASE Wednesday 26th January 2011 HACKNEY HAWKS BACK ON TRACK The Hackney Hawks Speedway team will return to the track in 2011 in the National League after being accepted into the Sport’s third tier at this week’s AGM. The team will be a joint project funded by and racing at both Rye House and Lakeside Speedways and will allow both teams the opportunity to develop young British talent in tandem. The team title of Hackney has been chosen as both tracks enjoy considerable support from ex Hawks fans and it brings into focus the lack of a London team in British Speedway at the present time, a situation which both clubs would like to see changed. Lakeside Co Promoter Jon Cook commented on this news stating: "This is a new exciting venture for us and will give our fans a chance to see the development of our young riders at our Arena-Essex Raceway. We expect to stage at least a meeting a month during the season and we feel the need to develop young British talent is a duty all clubs should undertake in future seasons. "We hope this joint partnership with Rye House will point the way ahead. I am sure London fans will be drawn to see the iconic Hawks race jacket in action and help us to continue pressure for Speedway to play some part in the Olympic legacy, which of course is on the site of the old Waterden Road Stadium, the former home of Hackney Speedway." Rye House owner Len Silver commented: "I am very excited to be linking with our friends at Lakeside, and I am sure this move will be a great success and a big factor in producing future stars for both of our teams. "Because of my own long connection with Hackney it’s nostalgic for me to be going back in that direction and I am sure the fans are in for a real treat once this exciting band of Hawks takes to the track in April".

Thanks very much. Both Gisborne and Waikaraka Park do need update on results. There is a Facebook item about the latter but apart from the finishing order it doesn't go into a lot of detail (at the moment). Really appreciate your help. -

And what has all this to do with Johnnie Fitzpatrick?
-
The New Zealand test team selectors will be surprised to hear that!

I was talking to a guy about speedboat racing and he claims that Fay Taylour also tried this off the south of England coast in some events about 1961?
-
The old memory is playing me tricks - but I know I chose to chat with him, Al Holliday, Stan Clark and Maury McDermott in the New Cross pits in that era.
-
Only recently I was told that Johnnie (?) Fitzpatrick was still alive and living in Kilburn, north London. I remember him mainly at Stoke but also recall him having involvement with the Johnnie Hoskins promotion at New Cross in 1959 - if the old memory isn't playing tricks with me.
-
There are two alternative discussion groups available. Obviously I cannot publicise them here (neither anything to do with me !!!PITW!!). And maybe a mod will delete this pretty soon? 'Keep Turning Left' is a very good read. I agree with what Jeff Scott says about it!

FORMER Newcastle and Southampton rider Mike Tams is permanently hospitalised. However, he still takes a very keen interest in speedway generally. If any site members would like to forward him magazines, memories or letters about the sport, especially what he calls "the old days" it would be much appreciated. Maybe even a cheerful letter and some comments on speedway - anything to keep him iterested please. And remember, Mike is now over 91 years old. His address is: Sunnybrook Veteran Centre Michael Tams, Room K2W02 2075 Bayview Ave. Toronto, Ontario M4N 3M5, CANADA.
