At the moment, as they say in election circles "there's been a low turnout." The early leader is Jack Milne (USA), but there's a long time to go until the Poll closes.
In Formula One Grand Prix racing there's one GP at least every two weeks. The same in many other motorcycle GPs. They are designed to create interest in the country where they are staged as well as providing an on-going championship. Why, then, are there too many GPs in speedway?
A poll is now running on this UK site
http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimespeedway
for "Who was the world's best rider 1928-39?"
The names given are:
Bluey Wilkinson (Australia)
Jack Milne (USA)
Jack Parker (England)
Vic Huxley (Australia)
Eric Langton (England)
Sprouts Elder (USA)
Wilbur Lamoreaux (USA)
Lionel van Praag (Australia)
Jack Ormston (England)
Tommy Farndon (England)
Voting closes on August 31 2008.
Was it from these meetings that the Ghurka (Nepalese) rider Joe Naidoo emerged? He had a trial - I am certain - with Ian Hoskins at Glasgow White City about this time?
Believe the guy's name was Joe Naidoo and that he was BRIEFLY at White City Glasgow under the promotion of Ian Hoskins. I think Naidoo started riding in Kenya - around 1949 or 1950???
I doubt if there was neutral track available. At that time the Provincial League was not recognised by the Speedway Control Board - therefore no National League track could run it - I hope I am correct?
Yes, the New Cross meeting was a poor one for Timo Laine of Finland. Previous to the round at New Cross, he had been racing in Holland ans somewhere along the way his bikes went missing and he had to ride on borrowed equipment - I think he used a bike belonging to Jim Chalkley (but not certain about that).
I found this Post by Doug Anderson in USA to be an amusing classic comment IMO. It refers to the meeting at APE NYS on Saturday July 26 2008 which was hit by heavy rain. Doug said:
"Gully washers - like a cow pee'in on a flat rock. Show over - right after rider introductions."
Does anyone have a contact for
przemospeedwy
who set up a world championship website? The email address I have and the contact on his site is email "bouncing."
Many thanks.
A pal tells me there is a reunion of sorts at Rayleigh Weir tomorrow (noon-3pm Sunday July 27). Terry Stone is said to be organiser.
Does anyone have more details of this? It deserves to be a success.
Could that be in anyway have beeb helped by the full page review in the esteemed "South London Press" I wonder? Well done. Norman. The book is a great read.
