  1. This afternoons edition of Living in the Sun is: 'SPEEDWAY - Nadia Sawalha meets Russell Payne and Claire Evans who are trying to set up a speedway track in Spain' I know its an repeat and things have moved on but maybe worth wtaching. -------------------- Im special and still have a straw to prove it!! ................ My members met list- post no 1587!!;;;;;;;; SWERVE RACEWEAR........SWERVE RACEWEAR........SWERVE RACEWEAR
  2. There was a long article about Jack Winstanley's career in 'Vintage Speedway Magazine' within the past two years. Very sad. He was a really dedicated speedway man over the years. RIP.
  3. A review of Norman Jacobs 'Out Of The Frying Pan' as in the 'South London Press' (July 4 2008) can be found in the FILES section of this discussion group: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/oldtimespeedway
  4. I don't see Wal Morton in any of the 1929 teams! Just a joke, of course.
  5. No restrictions on entries so far as I know!
  6. There is a full page review of 'Out Of The Frying Pan' in today's edition (July 4 2008) of the 'South London Press.' The review also carries a small competition which offers four readers the chance to win a copy of this excellent book. OUT OF THE FRYING PAN The story of New Cross Speedway Author: Norman Jacobs 160 pages, 40 photos ISBN: 978-0-7524-4476-5 STADIA, £12.99
  7. Walter Waterman (or Water Waterman - probably a joke!). I also thought Split Waterman rode Army speedway at Bari in Italy. I never heard him linked to army tracks in Germany - and also, until now, have only ever known him as Squire Waterman.
  8. The only Ron Sharp I know of once lived in Slough. He had second-half rides at Harringay and New Cross in the early 1950s, and later rode in Southern Area League for California-in-England. When the Provincial League started in 1960s he did have a spell with Stoke - not certain about his clubs after that. At one-time he was a protege of the former Southampton captain and then Liverpool rider George Bason. Ron Sharp died a couple of years. By trade, Ron repaired shoes and hadf a business in Slough. He was a really nice chap. I respected him a lot.
  9. Bert Edwards was in the mould of other late starters of that era - including Harold McNaughton at 37 and Tom Oakley at 38. How would they be viewed for the CL if they started speedway careers at that age these days I wonder?
  10. Gosh! You are asking me to cast my mind back a long way - at least 52 years (when I was a young man! ). Give me a day or so and I'll try to recall my dealings with Bert which, I can assure everyone, were amicable.
  11. Yes, he was Harry Edwards brother and had a particularly distinguished spell with Ipswich in the 1950s. I used to co-operate with him on his regular articles in the Speedway Star.
  12. I remember George Bason West Ham and Wimbledon in 1946, and breaking a leg that season. Cannot recall him at Wembley however. He later went on to captain Southampton, then rode for Liverpool, Swindon and California (in England). Started 1930s at Oxford and was still racing in France in the late 1960s. He also rode at the Hackney anniversary meeting in 1978.
  13. On top of the reply from kiwi, the author says: "personal cheques/bank draft or cash (well disguised of course!!)" I hope this helps you. PS: I would go for international money order (from Post Offices) or a bank draft.
  14. I really don't know. I will try to find out but probably you would need an international money order (I think you can get them from Post offices). Anyway, give me a day or so to check (sic) this out for you.
  15. My guess is that the "3" is a mistake and should not be there, just the "8".
  16. Hi Norbold: I found the site's book offer (as below). The actual list price on this site is crossed through. How come they have already got so many copies of the book I wonder. I anticipate a copy in a few days time I want to relive the happy years as a speedway fan - from 1946 to 1963. I am sure this book will prove a really big success. List Price: £12.99 Price: £6.83 You Save: £6.16 (47%) Prices subject to change. Used Price: £38.18 Third Party New Price: £6.83
  17. And quite probably Stan Tebby - he raced on grass as well as speedway between 1939 and the early 1970s.
  18. I am certain about that Poole link for Armando Castagna. I remember a rather grumpy Steve Schofield phoning to tell me he had lost his place in the Pirates' team because of the Italian's arrival.
  19. If one is not expected to question the results of a track promoter-town council meeting scheduled for early April, then why was the meeting publicised by the potential promoter in the first case?
  20. Ah yes, Gordon McGregor. A rider who I greatly admired.
  21. Thank you very much for this. And I guess his dad Stan was with him at most of the places he raced at?
  22. I agree - must be competitive and preferably continuous involvement over the seasons. And on the topic of the USA, where does Mike Faria rate in this? Or Gene Bonsignore and George Lazor?

  24. I am still trying to find out what happened at the mentioned meeting between Russell Paine and the local town council (April 8 2008). I have sent an email to this address which bounced back, nor reply to phone calls - don't seem to be correct - and I will be writing a letter today. Anyone else care to also try? The details are: Motospeedway España Apartado De Correos # 193 Puerto Lumbereras Murcia 30890 Spain Tel: 0034 670 609 760 Tel: 0044 (0)7904 234022 info@motospeedway-espana.com
  25. Yes, that does start to bring back memories to me. At the time, I thought Maido and the Dons were treating Jim Tebby badly - and still think that way today. It was then that I lost contact with the Tebby family.
