How was your GP day??
BTL replied to Vincent Vega's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Well what a weekend we had - arrived Friday and thanks to Lioness and X-Man we went to Somerset to cheer on the Tiggers. Don't think Mrs BTL (on her first visit to speedway) was too impressed with Friday - probably due to me abandoning her and some people standing in front of her blocking the view. However Saturday was a different kettle of fish!!!! Spent all day shopping - window shopping that is; it may be kind on the wallet but my feet hurt . Didn't meet up with forum so sorry for missing all of you this year. Thought after Friday night it was a time for sooking up to "she who must be obeyed". Had a beer on the Castle Lawn, soaked up the Sun and then made our way to the Stadium, where I could see she was becoming a bit more interested in the proceedings. Taking our seats (Row 18 just in front of the gate) she stopped complaining about the cost and started enjoying the atmosphere and occasion - it's amazing what a few beers can do and I think she liked Tony Hadleigh. By the time the evening finished, she'd nicked my airhorn and was giving it welly especially when the Brits were out on track. So what about the GP - DEFINITLEY the Best by far that I've seen or been to. Anyone who missed out - my sincere condolences! (Sorry M_L - you missed out big style). Great atmosphere, track and racing were superb (my God did I see passing! - Yes!!), fireworks, presentation and entertainment were first class. After meeting walked home to digs - fell asleep. More shopping on Sunday before steeling ourselves for the Air Wales (bmibaby) ATR 60-seater twin prop white knuckle ride home. All in all - A GREAT DAY OUT. PS - Mrs BTL must have liked GP quite a bit - we're provisionally booked up again for next year. -
Yep Sure am Weyhey! I sense a party in BTL's room (well he's got a family one lol) Not if 'er indoors is coming - then maybe I should leave her at home

Best place to stay in Cardiff for the GP
BTL replied to RichieEarl's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I think thats where BTL and mini-foghorm were last year Jive. If so I was up there for a little cola on the Friday night and it seemed a nice enough place if a little quiet! Take your own carryout though-they didn't seem to have heard of 'residents hours' Jive Lioness is right on this. It's a great place nice and quiet for a kip in the morning. There's a wee train station called Rwbinda (SCB et al no sarky comments re spelling) nearby with hourly service to Cardiff but you'll have to get bus (a no 21 or 23?) or a taxi back at night. The big downer - we all got back from the (very dusty) Queensway Meadows and the bar was shut. God did I need a drink that night warm and hot and very dusty. Still a little surprise for minifoghorn was the sight of Jason Lyons staying next door - she was even more impressed when she heard who his first team in UK was! -
We all loved the Golden Joker in the KO Cup last year didn't we! (NOT!) Obviously Len has had another senior moment in suggesting this and it would appear that all of the other promoters should be booking thier spots in their local eventide homes for the confused after this potty decision. BRING BACK TACCY SUBS!

Have to agree with anything that moves towards a squad sysytem - it will also gove credibility to the masses who don't understand the guest rules. Imagine the scenario - Rangers v Celtic and Henrik Larsson and Ronald be Boer out and being repalced by guests. Having said that the jury will be out for all speedway buffs until we see how it all pans out. How refreshing - 20-20 hindsight or a crystal ball would be a good thing right now

It might be a good shape mart W but it didn't have enough dirt or preparation on it in June when we were there. It crocked both Smart and Grieves. Lets not start this one again it's has been flogged to death already. Just making observation re track.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned Tobjorn (Toby) Harisson - saw him in 1967 at White City where he rode to a 15? point max in the pouring rain leaving the usually unbeatable Charlie Monk in his wake. Was brilliant that night.

Stone me who would that be :?: (NOT)

I would think that without the GP riders, then SKY will walk away from British Speedway no matter what :!: That would be a disaster. On the other hand Sky should give up the TV rights of PL and CL and allow the PL and CL to cut their own TV deals.

Danish Riders have their say!!!
BTL replied to Lanzilla's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
Funny, I heard Nikki say "For Sure" as well - a well known phrase said by Dutch footballers (Artur Newman, Fernando Rickson Ronald de Boer Michael Mols to name but a few) -
World Cup - Event Two report
BTL replied to Peter's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I agree brill report Peter, look forward to watching it on SKY tomorrow morning (or should I say this morning)! -
Hve to agree with you there - a kick board especially on the straights is a MUST! Get well soon Lukas

Yes Mark did well tonight condsidering that he'd been out for 3 months. But why should he reconsider - tracks would need to be the wider than the M25 before it was considered safe for a 5-rider format. Sorry I agree with Mark on this one.

If your grandfather wore the stripes (Glasgow) then the museum at the National Football Stadium (Hampden to you and me) have asked for any Speedway memorablia to be donated since the Tigers rode at Hampden from 1969 - 1972. Otherwise, I'm sure that there would be some old tiggers would give any glasgow racejacket a good home!

My first meeting was Glasgow Tigers v Swindon Robins at White City in 1966, with Robins beating Tigers that night. Charlie Monk, Alf Wells, Maury Mattingly, Willie Templeton, rode for the Tigers with Barry Briggs, Eric Broadbanks, Bob Kilby, and Martin Ashby for Robins (who became champs that year?) Also seem to remember Silver Helmet match race when Briggs beat Monk (and possibly broke track record as well). BTW I hope this is not a bad omen since we are at home tomorrow (13/7/03) against top of the table Swindon - deja vue or what? I hope not.

For the Czech Republic how about Jiri Stancl (George's father) He was a World Finalist many times. And how could you miss out Messrs Ermalenko, Hammil, and Penhall from the USA? It's difficult isn't it! Also when it come to actual pairings I seem to remember Scotland (YES SCOTLAND!) with Jim MacMillan and the late George Hunter giving them hell at Belle Vue one year (in the 70's?)

You're not alone Pirate, I obviously didn't deserve a mention off BTL either. And I'm fairly sure he even got a drink off me in the POW as well ! I'd have thought that was reason enough for a Scotsman not to forget me He'd obviously been bought plenty of drinks - he met ME in the POW too - and I'm not exactly easy to miss!!!!!!!! OUCH - I told you i'd miss someone. For the record I also met Lupus, Pirate, and Steve Turner I'm on the bell next time Steve -
