As an unlicensed track, there's very little BSPA can do about it. Maybe the riders could sue the promoters for loss of earnings. Probably more chance of getting blood out of a stone.
It was three 5 -1's for Oxford at plough lane to win 37 - 41, followed by a last heat 5 - 1 to the Dons at Cowley to win 38 - 40. I was at both meetings, it seems like yesterday!
We all have selfish views that suit our own lifestyles. I prefer mondays because it's a dead day for me. I have too many other commitments on saturdays that could make things awkward.
You will probably find that the leaseholders Carter & Bailey are a 'different' company to the speedway promoters BMR. If that's the case, then they might not be liable for the latter's debt. Of course, i could be wrong.
Harringay was a strange sort of stadium with stands of all shapes and sizes. I worked there a few times in the 1980's, by then it was in a pretty run down state. At one end of the stadium there were big flights of steps that once led to the long gone Arena that was demolished in the late 1950's.
Charlton used to be owned by London Stadiums Ltd, who also owned Park Royal and Wandsworth dog tracks. My mum worked in the racing office at Wandsworth. I think Charlton eventually ended up in the hands of the dreaded GRA, and like West Ham the writing was on the wall.
A lot of speedway fans like myself, are also football fans. Saturdays will definitely impact upon me at the start and the end of the speedway season. Coupled with Eastbourne's promotion, some difficult choices will have to be made by yours truly.
Len Silver tried to run speedway at Charlton dog track in the mid 1960's. Very few photographs exist of the stadium. I know it was just off the Woolwich road, close to the Valley football ground.
My mum saw speedway at Walthamstow. I worked there a few times during my career in dog racing. It was a really nice art deco stadium that seemed classy. It was the beginning of the end for London dogs when the stow shut.
Although the event at paradise park has been very successful in recent years. It will never match the sense of history i felt when it was staged at the Kings Oak pub. The venue was not big enough for purpose, but the nostalgia made up for that!.
They must have paid Len a few bob to take control of the stadium. A new leaseholder is the only chance speedway has of returning to Hoddesdon. I'm not holding my breath.
