Great to see the old Badger race jacket-didn't some of the old Brafield riders in the 60's include Laszlo Munkasci and Ian Champion-praps Ted Spittles also??Anybody recall??
Great posts Norbold and Parkstone Pirate-brought some memories back for me too-is Vic still with us.On an unrelated topic had the opportunity to chat with Stan Bradbury at Paris, Ontario last weekend-Stan has an amazing memory-a real gent too-,he clearly recalls incidents of the 1950's when he was riding for Stoke-he talked a lot about Gil Blake-anyone recall him??
See thread on Eric Boocock-looks like Ron was about to land one on Ivor Brown-at least things were guaranteed to happen when either of those guys were around.
Just re reading the Eric autobiography-very good.I am particularly interested in the old PL days and Eric's comments on Ivor Brown-what a dirty rider he was, how Ivor and Ivan had a memorable fight etc etc.Eric says Ivor had little ability but lots of guile-I greatly enjoyed his comments on all riders-but anyone have anything to add re Ivor Brown-I felt Ivor was a little out of his depth among the top guys in the amalgamated BL but also he was much older than many by that time. I always enjoyed watching him ride.
Didn't the "Metropolitan League" also operate in 64 briefly-Newport and Poole with a combined team called Newpool-I think Weymouth were in it also. Never was a full series of fixtures completed tho
Interesting post-I last saw Gordon McGregor ride in Doncaster in 1970-so he was 49 then-that means he was still a heat leader in the BL at age 44- that's pretty amazing-according to my 1950 Stenners he was riding for Glasgow White City regularly in 1949-and since by then he waould have been 28 perhaps he rode earlier also.
Gordon was definitely Scottish-had v. long career-Glasgow?, Oxford, Belle Vue, Doncaster-probably others. I recall him for Belle Vue in mid sixties think he was third heat leader with Soren Sjosten and Dick Fisher.
That's right midland red-the garage was at Bloxwich-thanx also starghost for reminding us of the unusual situation re reserves for 63 World Final-I'd completely forgotten that. Jim Lightfoot used to be known as Captain Jim-not just because he was the Bees capt. but I think there was a movie called that in the early 60's-funny how Jim seems to have disappeared-recall him riding at Long Eaton after he left the Bees.Incidentally does anyone know when Ron quit riding.
OK RONBUTLER-in your case we will make an exception and just knock 10 years off -making you 65 so you get to keep all your privileges-having said that even tho you claim to be only 75-do you recall anything about Ron Mountford or Jim Lightfoot as per other thread??
engine man-that is right that Ron had a garage and Rick worked there-how did Rick seem when you saw him that time. I think Jim is still alive but nobody seems to know much.Interestingly enough all 3 of these bees had one World Final app. -Ron as noted in 62, Jim in 63 and Rick in 67.
