  2. I,m sure the spectacular Mike Broadbanks wore red leathers when everyone else was in black!!
  3. Thanks Steve, A couple of 80,s riders now living in Perth have also suggested Hans Neilsen. Bob Humphreys now over 60 yrs young sends his regards to anyone out there who knew him in the National league ( Arena Essex/Milton Keynes) He is a brilliant road racer riding a 125 gp bike these days!!!!
  4. Rob is definitely the type of character I would invite round to a poolside barbie, so if you know him please invite him to my place here in Perth. If I have hit someones hot button on this subject, please send me a private email!!!
  5. I own a Godden Max upright . The motor is dated 1986 on the crankcase left side with n4 stamped also. This was obviously the number 4 engine of a rider who used this motor in 1986. Any idea who it could have been?
  6. Does anyone know what Rob Tilbury is up to? I remember him being a flamboyant character with flash leathers and bike. He was quite inconsistent, sometimes a brilliant racer and at other times ordinary. He often turned right on other riders down the straight putting them off or in to the fence! He drove round Canterbury in a 944 Porche and had a blond on his arm for several years! Rumour has it he changed the whole concept of the sports club located just inside the Kingsmead stadium complex!
  7. Can anyone tell me when the GM upright motors were first used in speedway as I am trying to date a GM for the classic speedway club here in Perth, Aus. To qualify, machines, or engines at least, should be 25 years old!
  8. Mitch was also mixing it with the likes of Steve Johnston and others last summer, January, in Perth, Aus, at the Ron Johnson memorial meeting. He flew over from his base in Sydney and gave us some entertaining rides on a borrowed bike before the engine expired! On good machinery he could have been in the top 3!!! He was also friendly to all the fans! I had a few conversations with him as he stayed in Quinns Rocks with Paul Pinfold, ex sidecar grasstracker! They found a bike in a shed, rebuilt it the night before the meeting, staying up till 3 a.m. and still Mitch rode well the next day!
  9. Anyone know what Roger Johns is up to these days.We all enjoyed watching him at Wimbledon on the outside in the dirt! Also brother Alan, used to look like a hairy Monster at Canterbury with long hair and bushy black beard!! There was another maybe Peter Johns?
  10. Anyone remember Bob Humphreys (Australian International) who last rode at Arena Essex and previously Milton Keynes and maybe Reading before that ! He has proven that life begins at 60, as at 61 yrs of age he is leading the 125 gp class of the West Australian Road Racing Championships. He competes against 20 yr olds in Perth, who cant beat him, and of course he still gets a flyer from the starts and overtakes several riders at the first tight right hander, He is as comfortable on the outside as he is the inside line, and he kept fit until recently at his local boxing club!!! Amazing stuff!!!
  11. I heard Mick was running a sand buggy bus tourist business, in a place called Lancelin with lots of huge sand dunes about 50 miles north of Perth!!!!
  12. Can anyone tell me if Rob Adlington is the same rider who tried out at Canterbury sometime in the late 70,s only to have a very nasty accident at aLydden grasstrack, which caused him to sustain a nasty head injury ? This may be a different rider, but would like to know what happened to the afore mentioned as I remember he was about 6 feet 5 inches tall like Arthur Browning! He was also very promising as arider!
  13. Mitch Shirra showed promising form early on in the meeting with a win in his first outing, followed by a couple of thirds and a second place.Total of 8 points from 5 rides! His bike was stranded in Adelaide, so he rode on a loan bike which he and Paul Pinfold had to rebuild until 3 a.m on the morning of the meeting. The crowd were introduced to Peter Collins who received an enthusiastic reception when he and Glynn Taylor rode some demo laps in between the heats. This venue is already a winner and when the new senior track is built along side this one where part of the existing moto x track remains, this place will attract more international riders, taking us back to the old Claremont days!!
  14. Barney Kennett of Canterbury Crusaders in the70,s and 80,s for his spectacular inside line, and ability to turn right on unsuspecting riders pitching them over the boards and not being excluded by the Ref. Also his punch ups with many other National League riders of that era. When Barney appeared in the parade lap you were guaranteed a fun night on the track!!
  15. Steve johnston grew up in the West Australian red desert gold mine town of Kalgoorlie where he started off with motocross.
  16. Does anyone know what Rob Tilbury is up to these days? I remember he was a bit of a character; and an ex international Milton Keynes, Leicester and Arena Essex rider now retired in the Perth hills tells me he is one of few riders who used to turn right on him down the straight to stop him passing!!!
  17. Gordon was probably one of the best inside line riders of all time. I also enjoyed watching his brother Barney who at times had both wheels on the football pitch on the inside at Canterbury!!
  18. Thanks to both Shazzy bird and Iris. I was able to relive the 70,s via those links. My early speedway heros Ted Hubbard and Barney Kennett are now Portly Gentlemen, Barry thomas looks the same as he did in the 80,s.
  19. I am isolated here in Perth, Western Australia. I often refer to my old speedway photos and wonder where are they now ? riders like Barney Kennett, Gordon Kennett, Roger Johns, Barry thomas, Dag lovaas, Bo Petersen, Mike Ferreira, does any one know ?
