COVENTRY Storm race their first National League fixture of the season when they face Scunthorpe at Brandon on Friday (7.30pm). The City Gearboxes Storm showed their intent for 2014 with a determined display at the home of title favourites Cradley earlier in the week, going down by just eight points in the first leg of the Travel Plus Trophy. Now they have an opportunity to collect their first league points against a Scunthorpe side who suffered injuries in their opening meeting of the campaign last weekend. The Stags are led by the experienced Steve Jones and also include former Bees mascot Conor Dwyer, whilst Adam Kirby and Sam Woods had spells with Kent last season. The Storm go into the meeting at full-strength. Co-boss Laurence Rogers said: “For our boys it’s a great chance for them to get some points on the board, and I hope the fans turn out to see them. “People will have looked at Tuesday’s result and seen how well we did at Cradley, so I very much hope they come along and get behind the boys.” Admission is just £10 for adults with all children free, and supporters are reminded of a £4 discount available on production of a ticket from the recently abandoned home match against Cradley. CITY GEARBOXES STORM: Stefan Nielsen, Luke Crang, Oliver Greenwood, Dan Greenwood, James Sarjeant, Ryan Terry-Daley, Martin Knuckey. SCUNTHORPE: Steve Jones, Conor Dwyer, Danno Verge, Adam Kirby, Sam Woods, Liam Sanderson, Ryan MacDonald.

COVENTRY Storm have the honour of launching the 2014 speedway season at Brandon on Friday – with reigning National League Champions Cradley providing the opposition (7.30pm). On a massive opening weekend of action the club stages the Elite Riders’ Championship on Sunday, but prior to that the City Gearboxes Storm go into action in the first leg of the Travel Plus Trophy. It’s the second season of National League racing at Coventry and hopes are high that the Storm can go one step further than in 2013 and secure a top four finish for a place in the play-offs. League points are not at stake on Friday but the competition should still be intense with the Heathens hotly tipped to mount a strong defence of their title. Storm hand debuts to British Under-19 Champion Stefan Nielsen at No.1 and Dan Greenwood, ironically signed from Cradley over the winter, in the middle-order, whilst the remaining five riders led by skipper James Sarjeant are all back from last year’s squad. The Heathens, who have reverted to their famous Cradley name after four years as Dudley, again have a powerful side with several potential No.1s. In the absence of skipper Paul Starke who has a prior commitment with Somerset, they call up their title-winning captain Ashley Morris as a guest. Storm co-boss Blayne Scroggins said: “Cradley are essentially the unbeaten champions, they won everything they could win last year and I know Coventry v Cradley means a lot to the supporters, it was always the big rivalry. “We want to prove we’re a match for them and I really hope the supporters turn out to see us again. “We had some great support last year and obviously we want more people to come along and take a look at us. If you haven’t seen National League speedway before, come down and see it – you’ll be surprised!” Admission prices for NL meetings are unchanged from last season – just £10 for all adults, with all children under 16 free. CITY GEARBOXES STORM: Stefan Nielsen, Luke Crang, Oliver Greenwood, Dan Greenwood, James Sarjeant, Ryan Terry-Daley, Martin Knuckey. CRADLEY: Ashley Morris, Nathan Greaves, Tom Perry, Max Clegg, Steve Worrall, Matt Williamson, Danny Phillips

COVENTRY Storm have made Ryan Terry-Daley their fourth signing for the 2014 National League season. The 19-year-old will be going into his first full campaign of league racing, but he gained plenty of experience as part of the Coventry set-up this year. Terry-Daley made six appearances for the Storm in 2013 as cover for absent squad members and showed good improvement, also scoring five points when he received a late call-up to the British Under-19 Final at Brandon. He will team up with Martin Knuckey at reserve, joining Luke Crang and new signing Dan Greenwood as confirmed starters, with the Storm looking to finalise their heat-leader arrangements shortly. Co-boss Blayne Scroggins said: “Ryan had some outings last season after coming through the Midland Development League, he’s been chomping at the bit and now he’s got the opportunity to prove himself. “He’s a good team man and we saw this year that even when he wasn’t in the team he was in the pits helping out - he was voted Rider of the Year by our sponsors (City Gearboxes) for his commitment to the club. “We’re pleased to have him in the team from the start, and it will mean another asset of the club racing for the Storm, which is all good for the future.”

COVENTRY Storm have confirmed returns to Brandon next season for Luke Crang and Martin Knuckey. The duo join new signing Dan Greenwood in the team for 2014 with several of the riders who gave the club a successful first National League campaign expected to be back. Crang made an instant impact in his first year of racing, joining the Storm at the end of May and racing to an average of just under five, which included some major high-spots – most notably his match-winning performance at Buxton where he held his nerve to secure the points in a tense last-heat decider. The 22-year-old, who became a Coventry asset at the end of the season, has also attracted the attention of Premier League clubs and will double-up with Redcar in 2014. Cornishman Knuckey, 20, had a roller-coaster 2013 campaign which started well before off-track issues forced him to take a month out of the sport. However, he returned with renewed enthusiasm and the club are delighted to have him on board again for next year. Storm co-boss Blayne Scroggins said: “I’m excited by the team so far, it’s looking like we will have several of the 2013 side back and hopefully there will be more deals confirmed shortly. “It’s going to be a big year for Luke with him doubling-up with Redcar as well, and I’m sure he’ll be able to use his experience from last season to increase his average for us. “Martin was so keen to come back to Coventry, so much so that he had the opportunity to go to a track 20 minutes from home, but he wanted to be here and once again it’s good to have a rider who is very much part of the Coventry set-up.”

get well soon Marcus , my friend ....2014 to start planning for !! -
COVENTRY Storm are delighted to announce the signing of National League title-winner Dan Greenwood for the 2014 season. Greenwood, 20, was a member of the all-conquering Dudley team which clinched the League and Cup double, and he played a key role as he hit his best form of the campaign at the crucial stage. The Storm have moved quickly after Greenwood was ruled out of the Heathens’ plans for next year due to other changes to their proposed team. He has extensive experience of Brandon after appearing for the Mercia Vikings in the Midland Development League in 2012, and he put that to good use in his visits last season. In a guest booking for the Isle of Wight, he won a high-quality Heat 13 in a race which also featured Charles Wright, Robert Branford and James Sarjeant – and he also got the better of Storm skipper Sarjeant in one of the races of the season in the Supporters’ Pairs Trophy meeting in October. Greenwood joins the Storm on what appears a bargain 5.74 average, and further team news is expected in the near future. Co-boss Laurence Rogers said: “Dan is a rider I know very well as I brought him back into the sport at Newport in 2011 where he showed a great deal of promise. “When Newport closed I helped him get a place at Dudley but also brought him to Coventry to do the MDL, which was a resounding success for him, and naturally I’ve kept close links with him. “It was a no-brainer from my point of view when he became available, and Blayne (Scroggins) and Mick (Horton) agreed with that. I think it will be a very good move for Dan, and his race with Sarj in the Pairs was one of the best I saw in 2013 – at the end of the year, he was really in heat-leader form for the Heathens. “He’s 110 per cent behind trying to retain his league winners’ medal in 2014, this time with Coventry, and he was actually trying to work out last night who else we could sign! That’s great enthusiasm and I’m sure he’ll settle in well with us.”
