He rode for New Cross in the first match I ever saw. 11 May 1960, a Britannia Shield match against Norwich. He won his first race (Heat 4) and became my instant hero. At the time, he was New Cross reserve but, of course, later went on to become one of England's leading riders, qualifying for the 1965 World Championship final.
