  1. I certainly agree with you Sidney. Briggo would/should have won in 1972 had it not been for Persson.

That is one thing of which I am totally convinced.

I think WK - Briggs/Olsen were the two that the final should of revolved around with my bias Briggs head on he might of won it on 14 points that wrangled me for years he could of equaled Fundin's five titles but it was not to be.One thing that people forget is Briggo reached QUALIFIED??? 🤓 for 17 finals on the trott 1954/70 and reached 18 finals in 19 years with a record of 4 / 3 /3 great record.

I won't pretend to be the world's foremost expert on the mechanics of the sport (not the sharpest tool in the box?!). But the reduced impact of the Poles - and Czechs for that matter - coincided with the peak of the Weslake in the late 70s and early 80s. Weren't all the Eastern Europeans exclusively on board the Czech Jawas at the time and as such were a little disadvantaged?

Falcace" a couple of the Poles i saw ride Robert Slabon,Jan Zabik there aquipment looked horrendous like track spares. Also they only had a couple of shabby looking bikes looked like they had come out of a scrap yard also they had dirty looking leathers.I think alot of the Czech's, Poles,Russians had it tough and it was to there credit they were even competetive.

  3. I've a feeling Jerzy Treszkowski was, technically, a Swede and riding on a Swedish license. the "proper" Pole at Swindon that year was Leonard Raba who did very little but then appeared on TV a few years later riding very well for the Polish team.

Was in 1978 when all the allocated Poles came here? None of them really pulled up any trees. Boley Proch, at Reading, was probably the best, but he only came over after Blaszak was send home after being caught shop-lifting.

Trzeszkowski was recommended to Swindon by Jan Andersson he had reached the 1967 World Final Colin Pratt/Rick France also reached there one and only World Final that year to.

  4. I'm reminded of the famous quote: the more I practice, the luckier I get.

You could claim of course that mauger was unlucky in 73 and 76.

1976 ? really i dont think anyone would of beaten Collins that night Simmons rode his socks off and PC picked him off.And when Collins /Mauger met it was irrelevent PC just needed to have no disasters to win the title.I would of fancied PC to beat Ivan if need be and even from the back 76 was his great day and he was unlucky in 77.

  5. Sadly? Wish I had been there...a meeting full of drama and controversy!

If Ivan had showed patience Steve do you think Ivan would of definitely picked Jerzy off.? in that meeting Jerzy had some horrendous rolling starts so was he lucky for me he was .Mauger looking back i felt he was lucky in 72 /77 (Collins moral winner) in 73 he was unlucky..So out of six WC wins i recon two of those 1972/77/ there was a case that Ivan might have been lucky GREAT rider and professional sports man though.Back to the Poles always felt Antoni Woryna was a class rider and later on in the early eighties Piotr Pyszny showed ability at Poole and Halifax.

  6. My memories are of Roman Jankowski scoring a maximum or paid ? at the Abbey and the Robins own Leonard Raba he just did not cut it.Raba was some gater but he fell off a fair bit Raba was very decent though and later on in his career 1984 maybe?? he represented Poland in a World team cup Final. Jancarz i did not see alot of but he was a class act did he win a Embassy Internationale a classic a big individual meeting Plech well was class exciting as well.

  7. I have just read in an article that i had that in the disastrous 1935 year Wimbledon decided to split the strong Huxley/ Pymar partnership up.This was to try and change there fortunes but nothing really changed.

  8. This was absolutely ludicrous. Chapman should hang his head in shame.

How can Bewley (who was not even considered good enough to be put into the 32 for the British semi-finals) be "too good" to be a track reserve for the British Final?

(incidentally Jack Parkinson-Blackburn - highest NL average, even above Bewley - was OK to be track reserve for the British semi-final).

In any case, surely the point of having a track reserve is to replace an excluded/withdrawn rider and ensure that the remaining 3 riders are kept honest and not gifted a point without trying?

If you only want a track reserve to be miles away at the back out of contention, then there's no point in having him at all.

Is Chapman really telling us that he was worried that an 18-year-old with 1 season's experience, might score a point in the British Final and this would embarrass the sport?

Yet he doesn't see that putting an Australian in the BRITISH Final and having him stood on the rostrum actually is embarrassing the sport in Britain??

The lunatics are running the asylum.

Honestly was Bewley denied his chance because of his average surely not ? these people who are running the sport are a joke what annoys me is they are never accountable for there failings.

  9. In 1978 in the Wimbledon match programmes they did a series of listing all of their contracted riders for the beginning - here is what they listed for 1935.

    Eric Collins

    Vic Huxley

    Syd Jackson

    Gus Khan

    Fred Levis

? Lemon (sorry no Christian name in the programme)

    Wal Phillips

    Geoff Pymar

    Bill Rogers

    Claude Rye

    Alf Sawford

    Jack Sharpe

    Wal Morton

    Hope this helps out.

    Thanks "Robbie!!

  10. I have just been doing some research on the 1935 Wimbledon Dons team god they finished bottom of the league.Looking at a photograph i have which included Norman Pritchard ( manager)- Gus Kuhn - Wal Phillips - Claude Rye - Wal Morton- T.Clarke (trainer)- Geoff Pymar- Vic Huxley- Syd Edmonds_. Jack Sharp they looked a pretty good team. They won only 8 league matches out of 24 to collect the wooden spoon. Can anyone add anything to this year and team anything would be appreciated.

  11. Collins often gets forgotten certainly the 1975 dustbowl at Wembley and in 77 he was very unlucky.Lee if you look he had chances in all of his six finals 1983 was the one that got away. One win two rostrum places and a fourth place from Lee was not bad when you look at Collins WF record now it looks like he underachieved .So false really because he was one hell of a rider in with Mauger,Olsen,Michanek as the best from 73 / 77.

  12. Have to agree with Falcao.

    To me:

Funding and Rickardsson are clearly 1 and 2.

Hard to see past knuttson and Michanek for 3 and 4.

And per Jonsson I thought clearly number 5. World champion and had his career cut short while at his peak preventing him adding to it. And under a gp system may well have been a world champion, which couldn't be said of any of the others being mentioned for that spot. I'd have to assume it comes down to "era bias"?

As much as i liked Per i dont think when he won it it was anywhere near as tough a era as some of the others named were in.The others named even 1970/76 Sweden were very very strong indeed saying that i do believe Jonsson would of won another title.

  13. quite agree most poole supporters very dissapointed that kyle has gone shame its not like years ago when riders stayed with the same club for most of there careers

Ray we had Mike Keen, Clive Hitch , Barry Duke none of those were world champions. But they are still remembered fondly even now they all had affinity with the fans that means something.Your club had Pete Smith Tony Lewis x2 Middleditch all Poole through and through that has gone missing in speedway now.

  14. Ford knows how Poole fans feel .they want a winning team ..if starke does well and Poole do well they will forget about Newman in a couple of weeks ..speedway is a numbers game there is no time to be loyal .

Loyalty works both ways remember that believe it or not some fans do have a affinity with certain riders. Obviously you have never had that so you would not understand.

  15. Really hard to beat around tilehurst, virtually unstoppable!

I really felt he could of won in 75 but the Russian Trofimov pushed him into third place in his first ride and that scuppered his chances.I think his temperment was superb a great style and the Reading side with Michanek,Lovass Curtis in it was some team.

  16. What about Henka Gustafsson then sid?Does he deserve a mention?Well he got one there anyway, oops!!

Really liked him "iris a real talent exciting world class when Lee had self destructed he helped Lynn in those few years to replace him.You are a longtrack buff how would you rate Michanek in that sphere.? Michanek is certainly up there in amongst the greatest riders i have ever seen underrated in my opinion.

  17. Sjosten was a terrific rider Sjosten, Lofqvist,Nordin,Nygren, B.Jansson Persson, all deserve a mention.I saw quite alot of Jonsson he partnered Holloway at Reading at times he was a talent.Hagonshocker another forum nut 🤓 also saw alot of him he always liked him have to say at the time Jimmy Nilsen seemed to be rated higher.

  18. How long have you been watching speedway ..people dropping points so teams can bring in other riders Has been going on for donkeys years ..but somehow you are amazed and shocked .wake up

Not shocked at all does it make it right ? it has been going on for donkeys years now it is likely to happen even more than ever now with the rules/ averages in place.By the way have you ever woken up you dumbass.😂
