  1. I said similar to my wife after going to Kings Lynn on Thursday. It cost us £50 to get in (£20 per adult and £5 per child (mine are 7 and 10 years old)), £8 for 4 seats in the grandstand and £3 for a programme. Add £20 for 2 pints,  a wine and couple of soft drinks and that totals £81 for the evening.

Ok so that was a one off for us as happened to be in the area, but there’s no way we could spend that out on a weekly basis to attend.

  2. First speedway meeting tonight for me since Lakeside closed. Thoroughly enjoyed cheering on the stars. My wife and kids thoroughly enjoyed the occasion too, after dragging them from our holiday home to come with me to watch.

great to see awesome Lawson still the same rider as I fondly remember. Jorgensen a real talent. Good to see Bewley also, great prospect for GB.

thanks to the welcoming lynn fans in the grandstand. Hope the lady that fell after heat 15 is ok

So 3 weeks today and swindon first meeting and track not even laid. .Rosco in the local rag says he has faith in  boss too have track ready as he  has a huge experience of preparing Cardiff. Isn't that a Job of Ole Olsen to oversee  and nothing too do with Terry Russell who oversees theTv. Interesting survey on Twitter showing 70% dont think track will be ready. I guess the other 30% our freeloaders and rose tinted glass wearers. ONLY TIME WILL SERIOUSLYr tell. One thing on there side the moment is the weather. ..Bet the storm clouds emerge soon as season starts though

Yeh, Sabre was/is him, Kent Sweepers was just the sponsors i think.

Anyway, according to companies house, he's based in Gravesend.  Certainly a fair trek, but not 200 miles by any  means.

Lived in Shorne (not a million miles from Gravesend) but moved from there late 90’s to a place about a 15 minute drive away

    Could have moved again obviously

From the radio interview, although he used Swindon as an example of speedway working with developers, the situation for Lakeside is different. They have lost their 'cash cow' and their home. An interesting part of the interview was he mentioned it could be some time before the developers start to build houses. I wonder if one or two more seasons couldn't still be raced at the track? In other words, if the track/stadium are going to sit idle, someone surely, could arrange a deal. And if Jon Cook truly has the backing of the developers and local council to find a new location, it will give the club time to sort something and provide continuity. I also feel, if the team moves to Rye House in 2019, it will be 'new' Rye House and Lakeside/Arena Essex will just be a defunct club.

I personally think if there was any chance that we would see more speedway in the current staduim whilst the developers are waiting to get in then Stuart would not have called it a day

  6. I don’t watch much live speedway these days but I had to get off my backside to see the last speedway meeting ever at Arena. I went along with my dad and took my son who is 7 and we thoroughly enjoyed the night, although we missed the last heat as it just got too late for my boy.

It was a very emotional night and we reminissed about the past for the majority of it, things such as:

Leigh Adams turning up to the raceway with Poole when he first arrived in the UK, at reserve on a 2.00 average! Also the day Leigh signed for us and reading of the signing in the Romford recorder.

Brian Karger being signed and his rides with Bo , and the moment we opened the speedway star after having it delivered on the eve of the new season (91)and the opening 2 pages ‘ARENA SAVED’ sprawled across them.

Moggo blasting around the outside of Roman Matiusek vs Coventry in the Inter league Cup (or whatever it was called)

Andreas Jonnson’s many passes from the back and just how good he was around our track.

I could go on all night but truly had a tear in my eye as I walked out and had to explain to my son just why I was so upset!

I will be going to the last banger meeting of the season to see the place for the final final time

I've only heard of 1 date which was offered  that Panthers declined through rider availability but it  would have gone ahead long ago had Scunthorpe's Rob Godfrey not got involved and had the meeting postponed and as for picking Lakeside at Rye House in the play off semi's , well can you blame them for that .

No you can’t blame them, 99% of us would have done the same.

Whether it’s right is another matter and it seems to be instilled in the majority of promotions that success will be put above paying speedway fans the majority of the time

  8. Agree with all comments. Enjoyable and close meeting, track was very slick but understandable with how much it would have been baked during the day. Not the usual racing, not any chance of a pass around the outside unfortunately.

A dozen Sheffield fans made the trip and were vocal on bends 1/2, fair play to them.

Broc Nicol looks good. Charles Wright unlucky with his bike breaking down in one heat and touching the tapes on another, a night to forget. Georgie wood unlucky not to get more than 3 rides, he looked good with 2 second places and a lot better than his 2 point average suggests.

Good to have Kyle back. Morris a class above and never troubled, as with Lawson. Night to forget for Adam. Alfie rode better than his zero points suggest, he will come good I’m sure, there is something about the boy. Ben got a good return.

Jon Cook sounding very unhappy at the BSPA

  9. My first meeting of the season tonight. Looking forward to this, hope the opposition put up a good fight and there is some good close racing that excites my 7 year old son as much as it did me when I first started going 30 odd years ago!  Sun is shining bright 10 miles from the reaceway.

Looking forward to seeing how Nick goes around our trick track!

  10. Yes it's the same David Smart.

Good second heat leader for us at times when the team was rather woeful. Not nice to hear he took his own life, may he rest in peace

    Edited for spelling (predictive text)

  11. David Smart. Swindon second string. As a Reading fan, he was an annoyingly consistent opposing rider. Took his own life (I think) a few years back.

Dave Mullett was my unsung hero for what it's worth.

    Tom

Is this the David Smart who rode for Arena Essex for a couple of seasons, around 1988/1989?

  12. Adrian Stevens was supposed to be the next big thing

Now there's a blast from the past. He was at Arena Essex in about 1988. First meeting away at Hackney at number 7, he scored 0,0,0,0. We all thought we were in for a treat, how wrong were we!

Absolutely. I can remember the likes of Adrian Stevens, Roger Horspool, Darren Spicer, Emerson Fairweather and Robert Ledwith at Lynn.

Rob Ledwith wasn't too bad, machinery let him down. He beat Martin Dugard round Eastie, which prompted Dugard to t-bone him after the race had finished!

Sorry to hijack the Wolves thread!

  13. Branford has improved massively in the last two seasons in my opinion. He averaged over six in his meetings for the Rockets last season, his average is only 4.60 because of his carried over scores from 2015 at Edinburgh not being knocked off by his guest appearances before he signed on as a full time Rocket this year.

I fully agree with the second part of your post about there not being any three pointers around that will do much better than a two pointer, however retaining Branford has been received well pretty much universally by Rye fans, and rightly so in my opinion. In the second tier he is on a bargain average, while in the top league he is on an average he should hopefully be able to retain, which should be seen as a success given the high points limit that has been put into place.

I see Branford a few times at Lakeside, guesting against us, and he was good. The guy has got some serious potential. Let's hope he kicks on this season
