HORNETS IN FLOODLIT MATCH THIS SUNDAY

 

It is Sunday evening racing at Queensway Meadows this week as the Newport Hornets face bogey side the Buxton Hitmen in National Trophy action with the riders on parade from 6.30pm.

The Hornets are waiting on fitness reports for their home-grown reserves James White-Williams and Tom Young while Tim Webster will definitely be absent after suffering a broken ankle in the collision with team partner Young at the Isle of Wight Speedway, Ryde on Tuesday evening. Young suffered delayed concussion while White-Williams is still recovering from a crash at Rye House Speedway in Hertfordshire on September 11th.

However the good news is that team captain returns to the side after cracking ribs in a fall at Scunthorpe Speedway on September 10th.

Explained Hornets' team manager Kevin Brown: 'We are leaving several blanks in the matchday racecard for Sunday as although there is a fair chance that both James and Tom will be fit to race against Buxton we may have to book some guest reserves. With respect to Tim's absence I may operate the rider replacement rule unless we have signed a new rider by then.'

Despite injury problems in recent weeks the Hornets still remain as one of the National League's form teams and the National Trophy clash with Buxton is likely to provide another close encounter with the visitors having squeezed a narrow 46 - 44 National League victory at Queensway Meadows on July 23rd with their number one Craig Cook having taken the track record at that level to 59.32 seconds for the four laps.

Cook is not the only up and coming youngster in the Hitmen line-up as the Derbyshire club have blooded Australian newcomers Robert Branford and Nick Morris this season plus 2008 British Under-15 Champion Jason Garrity. Branford, Morris and Garrity are a mere 16-years-old each but are already consistent points scorer. That youthful vigour blends well with the experience of skipper Adam Allott who is regarded as having amongst the best reactions in the sport when the tapes rise to begin a speedway race.

For the Hornets the switch to a 6.30 start is to allow them experience under the newly installed floodlights before the Cup semi-final against the Kings Lynn Young Stars at Queensway Meadows on the evening of Friday October 1st at 7.30pm and the league play-off leg against the Bournemouth Bucanneers on a date yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile the Newport Wasps have qualified for the end-of-season Jack Young Shield and have drawn the Berwick Bandits in the first round. The first leg will take place at Shielfield Park in the Scottish Borders on the evening of Saturday October 2nd with the second leg at Queensway Meadows on the evening of Friday October 8th at 7.30pm. The competition is held in honour of the memory of former World Speedway Champion Jack Young who remains the only rider to have won the sport's ultimate prize while a Second Division rider and the first World Champion to successfully defend his title.

With Tim Webster, James White-Williams and Tom Young all still out injured but with skipper Tony Atkin back after his rib injuries, Aaron Baseby and Ritchie Worrall again deputise in the Hornets side as they race their first fixture under lights ...should be a cracker!!

Lovely weather near newport at the moment i live about half an hour from the track and its sunny!! Its a bit on the cold side though and is supposed to drop to 6degrees tonight (brrrrr) wrap up people or resort to the nest always warm in there, any travelling hitmen fans?
