do any of those things 'promote speedway'?

Yes, because it creates publicity before the meeting and increases the attendance at the meeting. If it didn't do either, then I would have thought that Ian Thomas wouldn't have booked any interval attractions.

  3. Ian Thomas was regularly putting on interval attractions at Workington including Ken Dodd, Charlie Williams, Del Boy,  a guy who dived into a small tank of water from a great height, Ice Speedway Bike lap record etc. He certainly new how to promote speedway.

  4. Google Keighley Speedway.

There are links to a Grasstrack programme from 1932 and to a 2002 remake of the Keighley & District Supporters Club badge for sale on eBay.

There is nothing on the Defunct Speedway Track web site about a track being at Keighley.

  5. Hi,

I've had a look through the programmes I have for sale involving Peterborough in 1988/89 and it looks like there was a National Junior League (NJL) running in those seasons.

I can confirm that Peterborough raced Ipswich at home on 31/3/89 in the NJL and the programme I have for sale is the referee's copy so contains the completed NJL scorecard for that meeting:

PETERBOROUGH vs IPSWICH SPEEDWAY PROGRAMME 31/03/1989 (VERY GOOD CONDITION) | eBay

Also I have the 20/08/1988 Stoke v Peterborough programme for sale where the junior team was scheduled to race but the meeting was rained off so the programme is blank:

STOKE vs PETERBOROUGH SPEEDWAY PROGRAMME 20/08/1988 (VERY GOOD CONDITION) | eBay

    I hope this helps.

  6. Yes, there is a market for old Speedway Stars but there are plenty for sale.

Have a look at eBay to get an idea of what they are on sale for.

There are also some Facebook groups where Speedway memorabilia is bought and sold.

In my experience, there isn't a high demand for a large collection of 200 magazines, your client would have a better chance of selling individual magazines and an even better chance of selling individual magazines if they were to describe the contents/articles in the magazine. This takes effort but does attract speedway fans of particular teams or riders from years gone by.

Cheers marra...................have you, or has anyone else, got any photos of the Royals track pls ?

I've mentioned it in a previous post but way back in the early 1970's my late wife and I visited her aunt in Sittingbourne, summertime.   I had seen in a speedway publication mentions of a track at Iwade - so off we went to look for it (satnav, what was that?).....We found it but my fading memory has me thinking it was grass track with a rope fencing us off from the action.......but we enjoyed it, then set off for the nights action at Canterbury Crusaders versus our beloved Comets....big crowd, big defeat...still a good experience though.

Use Google maps with the post code ME9 8SP to get an idea of what the track and surrounding area looks like from the air.

Dave Payne was also there so he may have some photos of what the track looks like at the ground level.

Try the Barrow Speedway Facebook Group. I am sure someone on there can tell you the outcome of the Barrow meetings.

Was at a sports conference this week and I got talking to some guys from British Fencing....and I said that they would have more luck engaging kids if they called it sword-fighting. Anyway, got me thinking about the names of sports and I don't remember ever actually hearing how speedway got its name. Why is is not called dirt-track racing? I prefer the name 'speedway', but just curious....

The speedway we refer to is the shortened name for Motorcycle Speedway. Here is Wikipedia's take on the origins of the sport: Motorcycle speedway - Wikipedia
