Whilst being sympathetic towards the reason you were speeding, the time that you were speeding is probably more dangerous because when there is little or no traffic about, there is more likely a surprise in store such as a driver doing similar.

Without getting into anything, I knew what I was doing, which I'm aware can turn easily into 'famous last words': mostly straight road, LED headlights on full - they literally do almost turn nite into day, a calculated risk one might say.  Plus I am too familiar with at particular stretch of road having made too many similar desperaste, nite-time dashes (put the tiny violins away, sometimes shoot just happens).  Plus, plus I am WAY too scared of my mum, whose car it is, to take any risk in stuffing it :D, but seriously, sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

A friend who used to be a driving instructor, asked one pupil to go straight across a roundabout without turning left or right, they did exactly that and drove right over it.  Another was asked to turn right at a roundabout, and did so, turned immediately right, the wrong way around with the roundabout on their left hand side.  Another kept the car screaming in 2nd gear at 7,000 RPM for ages as they waited for the instructor to tell tell them to change up.  What finally caused him to give up being a DI was the number of people who had numerous near misses, or actually hit someone or something, didn't realise why and scaringly didn't seem to even care....

  2. At the risk of stirring the pot in both directions; the last time I did '60 in a 30' was at 2:20am last year, rushing to be at the bedside of a dying relative.  Ok, well naughty but I knew there would be little to no traffic (there wasn't any), hoped any local plod would be sympathetic, I know the roads well and am, hopefuly, a good driver - no accidents, convictions, nil points on licence.  Obviously I don't reccomend or condone such, arguably, legitimate 'boy- racer hooligansim' at all, but there are times one needs to step up big style and do one's best.  Sadly didn't make it in time but I'd probably do the same again.

On the other side of the coin, one of my uncles in one eye has a condition (cateracts ?) which means he doesn't drive at all after dark as he sees 'stars' under street lights, especially if it's raining, not sure whether he just doesn't drive at night or isn't permitted to.  Irellevant really as sadly, few people will ride with him as he regularly pulls out of his, admittedly quiet, cul-de-sac without looking (!) as "no one ever comes drives down here" :o, well one day someone might.  In other words he can drive ok but is, a 'tad' (!) ;) arrogant with his driving habits and attitude....

Send me a message with your address and I am sure I can sort you a couple out

Now THIS is also promotion ^^.   Really appreciate the offer Barry, but I have proggies from Hull's IOW visits, I downsized (?) my speedway collection focusing mostly on Hull Vikings & Ivan Mauger related items or other meetings I attended, or 'special' ones e.g. SGPs, SWC, SONs, Test Matchs, etc. as I literally had boxes and boxes (and boxes) of stuff.  The items I disposed of BTW; a lot was given to a fellow collector in Hull, some posted to a good friend & Glasgow supporter and vast amount of NL progs from 1970's to mid 1980's, many relating to Scunny, were given to a guy who works at Scunny speedway, so it all went to speedway-related good causes.

I hope IOW can come to the tapes in some from in 2021 and I wish you and Martin all the very best for the future.

    Good luck....

  4. With speedway-oriented friends, workmates and, going back a few years school pals, it has always been a saying between us "if you are near such-and-such town and go to the speedway, get me a proggie please".  Always say it semi-jokingly to relatives too.  Well, one year my folks went to the IOW on holiday, on returning they told me "you'll never believe it, but on alighting the ferry to arrange transport inland to the hotel, at the railway station / taxi rank (I forget which) the first thing we saw was a billboard advertising IOW speedway".  Now THAT's promotion, though my admittedly non-speedway folk didn't attend a meeting so never got me a proggie.  Oh well, can't win 'em all....

  5. Going slightly sideways, which is what we do in speedway, though staying mostly on topic;  I recently tried to buy rugby league publications for an uncle's birthday.  I drew a blank everywhere I tried; supermarkets, newsagents, garages, etc.  I told him as such and he replied "I'm not surprised (that I drew a blank), they aren't printed in the off-season (I subsequently discovered that they are) no-one would buy them as there is nothing going on, they are only sold in the actual season.  There are only 12 teams in the top league (UK) anyway so there wouldn't be much to write about out of season".   I mentioned Speedway Star is printed all year and in a 'normal' close-season contains features, interviews, team & season reviews, possible team news, etc, and assmumed publicaions of other sports would also be printed all year, they certainly are in other motorsport, he was extremely surprised.  For some reason I forgot to mention there are 6 teams in the 'top' league of British Speedway....

  6. Comsidering what may be an obvious question; bearing in mind my interest in football is zip, the only grounds I've visited are Shielfield Park, The Shay, Owlerton (think they staged football for a time?) (original) Wembley and Hull's KCOM Stadium (only as part of a university course).  So: how does it work for the football divisions / leagues with presumably the F.A. creating, enforcing and if necessary altering the rules of the game for the clubs which are (presumably) all separate businesses ?

I just wondered in respect to how a much proposed 'independant ruling body, could / would work enforcing the (too many?) rules & regulations to ensure unbiased fairness in UK speedway....

  7. Various options exist to cope with the sun getting in one's eyes on a speedway track; tinted goggles and / or angling one's head with helmet peak are but a couple.  The sun shon over the 1st bend at the Boulevard (from time to time) and Kelly Moran's stated method was "as you go over the start / finish line and you can't see a thing because of the sun I just count 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi - then I turn left".  Sure seemed to work for him :D....

I can only speak for myself, but my enthusiasm for speedway has been restored in the past year. I've been watching since 1974 and had become disillusioned in recent years.

I have kept taking the Star (fantastic work Mr. Rising), but my visits to the track had dwindled.

I've now realised how much I've missed the sport and will be going more regularly as soon as I am able.

This ^^ word for word.  Was all up for going to the Ben Fund Meet at Scunny, day before got a 'cold in der dose' so cried off.  Next day felt a lot better (as you do), by 4pm, so too late, thought "nice day, heck I could probably have gone after all.  Still, there will be loads more speedway to come.............".....

Email ssdigital@pinegen.co.uk and we will send a link to this week's mag. As much as we are frustrated by late postal deliveries, the problems lay with local sorting offices. Over 95 per cent of subs are delivered by Friday although, of course, having paid a first class fee we would expect Thursday.

Thanks, email sent, a digtal copy is better than nothing but still prefer the paper version, Post Office deliveries permitting....

  10. Mine is late again, but others in Hull recieved theirs.  Occured to me I think it is because its not in a brown envelope no more I bet its treated as junk mail so not important, I know the magazine is sent in clear bags for a reason.  So maybe it looks like junk mail and could be the reason that when it comes to sorting out priorities as we also get catalouges (requested or not) and leaflets in these wrappers.  Other post, including magazines, still arrives ok and is posted in envelopes....

As with all quiz questions, they’re easy if you know them. The question did at least narrow down the options by asking which commonwealth country Ivan was from.

Brought a smile to my face hearing Speedway mentioned I must say

Woulda dun the same for me too, had I watched it....

Shame you didn't do the Wembley tour as it was quite comprehensive...the changing rooms, tunnel, Royal Box, TV Room etc etc. Glad that I did it and got to see some of the trophys and even the crossbar that was used during the 1966 World Cup and Geoff Hurst's "Did it cross the line" goal!

Yup, wanted to see all of that, maybe examine the bends of the track which remained in place during ball-game sports just the straights were coverted  with turf, especially the tunnel / speedway pits how narrow were they.  Fascinating stuff, too late gone now.  Incedentally I was at the last World Final at Wembley in 1981, impressions: "wow I'm actually at Wembley, it isn't as big as I thought it would be (the main 'arena bit') a bit cramped too for speatators", I was in the seats half way up on turn 3.....

Certainly is, have done the stadium tour with Charlie George.

I drove my mate and his wife to Wembley Arena to see KISS in 1999, my prevous visit was th Lada Indoor speedway in 1983 or so, difficult to imagine speedway in such a small area.  Anyhoo the Wembley Stadium Tour was operating on that day, was pretty cheap a fiver or so, I really wanted to go on it however my mate and his wife didn't fancy it despite having visited Wembley few times for rugby, football, etc., so a connection there, one might think.  Instead, we sat in my car for 3 1/2 hours, I ate my packed lunch and listened to the radio while they passed the time by arguing, what fun.  KISS were great, BTW but the day out didn't end there, as on being told it the drive back to Hull would likely take 4 hours or so my mate and his wife decided to they may as well go to sleep, thus leaving me with 2 corpses, hmmm.  Actually I left both corpses by the side of the road - I'M KIDDING !  Though it was the last  trip of that kind with those two (guess why ?!)....

To be fair Ivan won his last world title over 40 years ago...

Anyone under 45 or so most likely haven't heard of him, even if they have a vague knowledge of Speedway today...

Of non Speedway followers I would suggest Tai Woffinden would get much more of a recognition from the general public than Ivan if they were asked to name a speedway rider..

[didn't mean to multi quote, text editor issues] above probably true, never saw the prog myself as I don't watch quiz shows, just passing on what I was told....

What has gone largely unsaid over the years was Zenon's appearance at this meeting was his first for the Hawks since 1976 and he was replacing Vic Harding so terribly killed just a few weeks before. Most Hackney fans never truly recovered from the loss of Vic but Zenon's arrival certainly had a major impact on restoring the clubs soul and making the healing process a little less raw. A month later, he beat Olsen from the back smashing the Track record in the process and Zenon was truly back!

Yeh, and while these are tributes to the late great Zenon Plech, for info: the meeting was the Inter League 4's and Ivan Mauger wasn't scheduled to ride for Hull in any case, other teams lost their top riders for whatever reasons.  Either way, Zenon made the journey from the World Pairs in Denmark, was present and correct on that very wet day in Sheffield and rode his best for his team, which being his first meeting for the Hawks for 3 years is all the more commendable....

  16. Good promotion / customer care stuff there Phil and appreciated but hopefully it won't come to that, hasn't for me so far (fingers crossed).  And we all hope 2021 is a better year than the current one has been so far, it won't be difficult....

  17. Speaking as a track anorak, while fascinated and impressed by the progress planned and currently taking place at Plymouth, I seem to recall reading that permanent buildings and structures weren't permitted on the St Boniface Arena land.  i.e. just a fenced  track and portacabins ?  While I'm sure the promotion know what they are doing, presumably they aren't going to a lot of time & effort just to maybe (hopefully not) tear it all down again....
