Leszno Gp 30th April 2011
ImpartialOne replied to racers and royals's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
You have to feel for Holder missing the cut with 9 points. The old boys have still got it, I think Gollob and Hancock could still be a force in GPs when they're 50. -

Ermm.. No. Not if you take 1998-2004 into account. -
It is also the difference between 1st and last in speedway, but however you look at it it is still only 1.5mph which is not a massive difference in speed, and in Formula 1 the percentage would be significantly less than it is in speedway.

Coventry for one, used to have 2 track records listed (before the track changed, circa 1985) with one for old tyres and one for (then) new tyres. A similar thing should be done for the silencers, although Scunthorpe's has already fallen. I didn't mean to write Scumthorpe, honest!

It's smaller than Belle Vue so yes it is small.

The team thing has been tried and failed. Team Exide Team Owen Bros Team Nilsen Team Tatum Team Hagon Personally I don't see the point in having teams in an individual championship. -

Hang on, am i thinking of 2009? Ok he deserves to be there this year, but I still don't see him being a danger, other than to the riders on the brink of qualification. -

Lindgren will barely scrape qualifying. To be honest he doesn't deserve to be there after failing both attempts to qualify last year. I think Crump will win with Gollob pushing him hard, Pedersen will be 3rd or 4th. Hancock will tail off this year and retire from GPs, finishing just below the cut. Harris 7th. -
From memory, this is my recollection of events. (feel free to correct me): Lee was absent from the first test v USA at Swindon in 1984, being replaced by Wigg (or Davis?). Not sure why he was missing from that match but he returned for the test at Cradley and rode very well. Then at Ipswich, notorious referee Frank Ebdon warned all riders before the meeting that anyone touching the tapes would be excluded. This was unprecedented at the time but I think paved the way for the rule as it is today. Lee couldn't keep still and was excluded in his first 2 rides and declared he was going home because "referees are ruining the sport." He then received a 5 year ban for an earlier incident at Kings Lynn (?) for 2 wheeling the wrong way round the track whilst racing was in progress. In an interview he said he felt he had been victimised and looked a shaken and troubled man. I think he returned to racing around 1989 once his ban was up but 5 years out was always going to be tough to come back from. I believe he injured his back shortly after and retired. A massive shame that his career went the way it did, he looked world class in 83 and could have continued in that vein for a few years but his head was down in 84 and in his own words, he was "disillusioned". Incidentally, Carter rode in that first test at Swindon, as usual getting hot under the collar after he himself touched the tapes and Dennis Sigalos signalled to the referee whilst under starting orders, pointing to Carter to be excluded, which he was. Carter then blamed Sigalos for "messing the race up!" Shortly after, Carter crashed at Cradley racing for Halifax and was run over by his team mate, shattering his right leg. He was indeed in plaster during the interview on TVAM. There is some excellent footage on you tube of Carter qualifying for the British Final in the semi at Oxford, just days after his leg was broken. Just type in speedwayondisc and search their channel.

Proof that comedy isn't always reliant on profanities. What a gem. -
Not really. Someone else questioned it. I confirmed it.

Couldn't agree more. That era around late 90s, early 2000s was horrendous image wise. Glad it didn't stick. They are a hell of a lot cheaper than the suits but they don't belong in speedway and never will. As for JK, I would say it's more likely training and healthy diet, as suggested. -
I think it should count for teams at any track under the same name.

Name Of Famous Rider Who Committed Suicide?
ImpartialOne replied to chris67bug's topic in Years Gone By
Spot on. -
I had Penhall down as number 3, purely because Hans and Erik were so dominant throughout mist of the 80s I couldn't see anyone else matching them, although it would have been an interesting battle had Bruce continued. I gave it to Hans in the end as I think average wise and overall gold medal wise he was the better of the two. Sam is up there due to his awesome 1985 final and his continued progress and was in great form in 89 before his bad longtrack smash. Knudsen for his 81 final, consistency and the fact he was almost world champion twice. Sigalos for his form leading up to his injury and I feel Siggy would have been odds on for world champion in the mid 80s but for his retirement. Egon is in there only for his title in 83 but apart from that he doesn't really compare.

Unfirtunately there are many people around these days who fall in to the category of the house buyer in question. I knew a guy who worked at an abattoir surrounded by fields. They operated for 20 years day and night with trucks going in and out all hours of the day. Suddenly a housing estate appeared and within 3 years they were forced to close due to complaints from residents about the noise! What is worse than these people is the laws that let them get away with it. A few residents closed a business and put around 50 people out of work. The consequences of the resident in Mildenhall and the laws that allow him/her to do such a thing a far greater, not to mention more absurd given the surrounding noise pollution.

Does he turn the bottoms of his leathers up and shout "come on, I lean!" If he ever took up conventional speedway he could sign "to Rye, eh?"
