PC signing at Stafford Classic Bike Show

PETER COLLINS will be on the Retro Speedway stand signing copies of his fast-selling, much-acclaimed autobiography at the Stafford Classic Bike Show next weekend.

PC will be there on both Saturday/Sunday, April 22/23.

The full address of the venue is:
    Staffordshire County Showground
    Weston Rd
    Stafford
    Staffordshire
    ST18 0BD

For full event details and how to get there, please visit their site at www.staffscountyshowground.co.uk

It’s a good opportunity for Midlands-based supporters. PC regularly attends this twice-yearly event and says it’s an oasis for motorbike enthusiasts. So if you can make it, please do come and say ‘hello’ to PC, Susie and Tony Mac and get your book for just £20. As well as signing your book, Peter will also be very happy to pose for selfies.

Keeping It On The Tyres has sold rapidly and we expect it to sell out completely before long, so don’t miss out.

You can still order a signed copy from us. To take advantage of our offer of a £5 saving on the RRP of £25 in the UK, go to www.retro-speedway.com or phone Susie on 01708 734 502.

Peter will sign ‘Best Wishes’ in every copy ordered through Retro Speedway, which is another great reason to buy it for £20 directly from us instead of online giants Amazon and retailers Waterstones.

    Thank you.

It's a magnificent book Tony, well done to all who helped with it's creation.

Whatever people's views on PC and recent fall outs, it's still a great read and insight into 70s / 80s speedway.

    Thank you!

  2. An excellent meeting with many great races.

Doyle was a worthy winner, as several others could easily have taken it, but his experience of GP finals may have helped when it counted.

The 5 rider semi / 6 rider final worked well and the BV staff deserve great credit for the slick presentation. Not sure about the reason to give the two track reserves two 'match races' but that's being picky.

  3. A good meeting with decent racing.

Well done the Tigers, they fully deserved their win and as has been said before, they look the team to beat this season.

Having said that, there were a lot of positives for Belle Vue as well, with Kurtz, Lidsey, Blodorn and Brennan all having their moments. Undoubtably Bewley will score far heavier in the future, so I'm not that downhearted.

Spotted Chris Holder sat in the grandstand behind us as well.

And sometimes you are just simply bang to rights. I am sure that there are many still of the opinion that Harold Shipman was just a little trigger happy with the flu job and that Fred West was over enthusiastic when he was fitting damp proof courses.(cue the indignant comments of ''How dare you compare him to a mass murder etc etc)

I have the list on my desk and it runs into the 100's and 100's and that's a fact. Whether you choose to believe that is none of my concern. The late Phil Rising was sent a copy and was well aware of its contents. This, I might remind you is from an ex-rider who retired some 36 years ago. According to some 20 odd riders I spoke with recently, all confirmed that they did not get a free pass during the one year PC was Promoter.

In addition, the tone of the many letters received personally and by the BV management were abusive and demanding. I would challenge anyone reading this to say they would capitulate to such demands made this way. The P&L of any speedway club sits in the hands of the Promoter and so does the decision of the 'free list', Not an ex-rider of any description. Someone earlier mention Hans Nielsen. Does anyone think Hans would make such a demand of the current Oxford promotion and expected this to be granted? Its unthinkable.

I have bitten my tongue on this subject for 7 years and have an A4 ring binder full of letters and notes that are appalling from the hand of the ex-World Champion. I also have copies of 3 letters sent to him from the BV management asking to come down and discuss the matter. Plus 1 inviting him to discuss a meeting to celebrate 40 years since his 76 victory in 2016.  All unanswered. Interesting don't you think?

The disgusting note scrawled in my late friends book really was the last straw and the facts need to be put out there. For those of you intimating that there are two sides of the story, its a witch hunt and it was a moment of aberration, you are welcome to your opinion. I much prefer facts.

I have a clear conscience about all of my postings. The book incident was the last of many such abusive incidents and only 10% of the iceberg has been revealed. There is no getting away from the fact that Collins has totally brought this upon himself.

Thank you Ian. Most of us are watching this (sad) story evolve  from the outside. Inside information like this is very interesting.

.......... and can I reiterate I was a massive PC fan as a rider.

My first recollection him and Speedway was when he was the announcer at Wembley following disastrous tenure of Bob Danvers Walker. I think he was responsible for a number  of TV personalities  going to Wembley at that time Ed Stewart  and whatever the name of the dancing girls were on Top of the Pops

  6. For Mia's sake, I am pleased that he has apologised and hopefully a line can be drawn under this sad affair. Whether it changes people's opinion of him I'm not sure, I think that the damage has been done.

However, I think that bringing up a 35 year feud was a rather petty way to somehow justify his actions, and whether he knew about Steve's cancer or not, the comments were disgraceful.

Thank you to Tony Mac for being an intermediary in this, it can't have been an easy conversation.

  7. I loved PC as a rider and he was always approachable to young fans like me. I eagerly awaited his book and read it from cover to cover when it arrived. It was well worth the wait and gave an honest, entertaining review of his life and times. I especially liked the first third of the book when he talked about his childhood and his schoolboy friends.

However, I have to say that, following the disgraceful treatment of a true gentleman like Steve Casey has changed my opinion of him completely. He suffered a stroke several years ago and I am sure that he still has medical issues. The 'old' PC wouldn't have stooped as low as this, I'm sure.

So sad that he has ended up a bitter old man, his legacy is in tatters for me.

I was going to read his book again in a few months, now it will sit on my bookshelf forever.

  8. Sadly, it was announced tonight that Steve Casey has passed away after a battle with cancer.

A wonderful man, a wonderful speedway FAN. After his riding career ended after spells at Ellesmere Port and Newport he returned to his spiritual home at Belle Vue where he performed a superb job as a presentation manager.

I was proud to know him when he worked with Allied Dunbar (along with Chris Morton) in the 90s, and used to love our chats at the NSS every meeting in recent years.

He always had time for people, and there's no greater compliment that I can give him. It's a lovely coincidence that he passed away as his team are finally the champions again.

RIP Steve. A speedway legend who will be missed by many. Thoughts are with his family and friends.

  9. Some great drama with plenty for the fans to discuss, speedway at it's best. When speedway gets it right it's still a fantastic spectacle. The celebrations afterwards by fans, riders and management showed how much it meant to them.

I much prefer a great team match than individual meetings.

As far as the matches go, yes there were controversial incidents and none of the referee's decisions were easy, but let's concentrate on the positives.

Well done the Aces after 29 long years and Sheffield will be contenders again very soon, I'm sure.
