Young British Lions Coming To Perth, Wa.

This is the best thing that has happened to Australian speedway in decades. This is revival. Every one remembers the English tours of the seventies. I know this may not be a Test match series but it has all potential to revive memories of those often talked about tours. This team is following the footsteps of past legends. From Perth to Adelaide to Sydney and Brisbane, not the same city venues but the same trail. Full credit to Beverley and Marcus and their band of dedicated helpers and sponsors. You guys have the guts and initative to revive something. Now I hope the Australian Speedway public will respond and support the tour through the turnstiles. Tony Webb Shaleway.
  2. Italian U21 Speedway Champion Paco Castagna will make his Australian debt this summer as a Resident Rider at SmokeFree WA Pinjar Park Motorcycle Speedway. The SMCWA are delighted to have Paco spend his European off season in Perth & we look forward to see the exciting youngster in action from mid November onwards. Paco is the son of former Italian star Amando.

2013 King Of Pinjar, Pinjar Park, Perth Wa

2013 Kennards Hire ''King of Pinjar'' & Gordon Rowland Memorial. Another fantastic Perth night for speedway with warm weather and a great crowd in that put a real buzz around the venue. The punters left Pinjar Park Saturday night with more than their monies worth after another awesome display of racing from all divisions. Congratulations to the SMCWA on another very well run event with some 50 events on the main program and finishing well on time. The long running Gordon Rowland Memorial event for the junior 125cc solo riders was dominated by WA#1 Matt Marson who gave a faultless display of riding throughout the event. Young Marson was pushed hard at times during the night by Jack Smith, Declan Knowles, Jarrayd Ziedas & the pint sized Brad Gordon (10 yrs old). The final was a ripper with Matt Marson, Jack Smith, Jarryd Ziedas and Brad Gordon all facing the starter. Marson got the jump and was never headed with Smith, Gordon & Ziedas all battling it out for the minor placing's, all these boys put on some very spirited racing as did the fast improving Tessa McQueen & young Connor Bailey. Well done to all the junior riders on a great nights racing. The junior 250cc solos were again dominated by Jett Muller who went through the card undefeated from his 4 rides. Some early carnage saw Jarryd Ziedas and Mitchell Gill tangle in heat one with Ziedas's machine flipping high and long into turn three and parking itself upside down into Daniel Clements. All riders involved were all ok with only Jarryd's machine unusable for the rest of the meeting. Two of the 250cc heats were absolute gems with Gill & Clements pushing Muller to the limit with all three riders not giving an inch. Big Russell Mitchell & Josh O'Bryan again took the honours in the sidecar heats with some super exciting racing with all teams putting on a fantastic show. How good is it when these these guys lock horns three wide into turn one, crowd favourites for sure. The main event on the program was the 2103 Kennards Hire ''King of Pinjar'' solo title. A full 16 rider field which included Victorian international Ty Proctor, WA Champion Cam Heeps, English riders Joe Jacobs & Lewis Blackbird, former title holder Kale Ballantyne and local ace Dan Winchester. The heats where ''red hot'' with Proctor going through undefeated, Heeps, Winchester, Blackbird, Jacobs, Doug Scoble & Brady Webb all in the mix throughout the event. There was action in every heat with some of the best solo racing see at the tiny Pinjar venue. Again the crowd were well treated with the fancied Proctor riding lines that weren't even there. Controversy was to follow with Winchester being awarded the win in the B final after Joe Jacobs crossed the line thinking it was the final lap and cheque flag. After some discussion referee Paul Foster stood firm and awarded the last chance qualifier to Winchester over Jacobs. Gate positions were chosen trackside with Proctor taking gate one from Blackbird, Winchester & Heeps on the pickets. When the tapes flew it was Blackbird & Proctor elbow to elbow fighting each other giving Winchester a clear run into turn one, from there the rest is history. To Proctors credit he used every inch of track he could to catch the fast riding west aussie but to no avail. It was a well deserved win to Winchester who rode a blinder to hold out Proctor, Heeps & Blackbird in a epic final. Again well done to all 16 riders on putting on a fantastic show for the punters, great effort. Results - Kennards Hire ''King of Pinjar'' solo title - 1st Dan Winchester, 2nd Ty Proctor, 3rd Cam Heeps, 4th Lewis Blackbird. Gordon Rowland Memorial - 1st Matt Marson, 2nd Jack Smith, 3rd Brad Gordon, 4th Jarryd Ziedas.
  7. DOUBLE HEADER EVENT - 2013 Kennard's Hire ''King of Pinjar'' & the Gordon Rowland Memorial. The 2013 Kennard's Hire ''King of Pinjar'' solo title promises to be an absolute cracker with confirmation Aussie international Victoria's Ty Proctor (Wolverhampton) will make a welcome return to Pinjar for this exciting event. Proctor always gives it a red hot go at the tiny Pinjar ring and will want to... make amends for missing the final (runner-up in 2010 & 2011) of the Rob Woffinden Classic back in December. Also in the line-up is Perth' very own international racer & current WA champion Cam Heeps (Ipswich), English Premier League riders Joe Jacobs (Glasgow) & fellow countryman Lewis Blackbird (Leicester). This will be the last Australian appearance for all four young international racers as they prepare for British League duties later this month. 2011 ''King of Pinjar'' winner Kale Ballantyne returns to racing after a nasty spill at the recent Australian U21 title at Loxford Park speedway at Kurri Kurri NSW. Young Kale will be keen to get back on the bike after the disappointment of his first taste of an Aussie final. The Cannington flyer, Dan Winchester is another talented racer looking for a solid finish to the Pinjar summer after his well earned 4th place behind some very talented company at the recent Rob Woffinden Classic. Other local riders such as Ethan Ballantyne, Brady Webb, Trevor Williams, Doug Scoble, 16 year old Blake Russell and lady racer Carley Gittus are all very capable of pinching points during the heats. Junior solo riders will also feature in this DOUBLE HEADER event in the long running blue ribbon event for juniors, the Gordon Rowland memorial. This special event dates back to the the early days at the old Bibra Lake speedway and named after the late Gordon Rowland who lost his life in a racing incident at the former Claremont venue. WA junior champion Matt Marson will start out as favourite but will face some fierce competition from the Ziedas brothers, Kobee & Jaryad, the fast finishing Jack Smith, Declan Knowles & Mitchell Gill. Talented rider Sheldon Gill will unfortunately be missing for the event due to a heavy crash last week and were he suffered a badly broken upper arm, from everyone at the SMCWA & Pinjar Park we wish Sheldon a speedy recovery.
  8. Sorry for the delay in this report but we've been flat out of late and only 2 hands.... Another perfect Perth night for the second leg of International speedway events in the past fortnight at Pinjar Park. A good sized crowd enjoyed some very exciting racing from all divisions on show but it was the internationals most had come to see. Big hitters Ricky Wells (USA) & Ricky Kling (Swd) where a class above the rest as the International All Stars def the Oz Hot Shots 60 - 44 in a well received teams format meeting, something new for the Perth bike punters. Wolverhampton star Ricky Wells (15pts) as Captain rode a faultless meeting for the All Stars and was well served by Ricky Kling (10pts) and three very talented young Brits in Joe Jacobs (8pts), Kyle Newman (8pts) & Kyle Howarth (8pts) with local riders Doug Scoble chipping in with (4pts) & Jake Lewis on (2pts). The All Stars dug deep and were well managed throughout the night by former Peterborough star Nigel Flatman who revelled in the position. The boys all rode their hearts out tonight and i couldn't of asked for a better result Flatman said after the meeting. As for the little underdone Oz Hot Shots none rode better than recently crowned WA #1 Cam Heeps (14pts). The young Ipswich rider showed the way all night and was well backed up by Dan Winchester who hit his straps with a solid (9pts) while the Captain Frank Smart (8pts) still showing signs of soreness from a recent bingle where the best of the Hot Shots on the night. It was tough going for the boys but to ride against the calibre of Wells, Kling and to a lesser extent Jacobs, Newman & Howarth the experience was invaluable. A new perfect track made from some awesome racing during the heats and with the likes of Kling, Heeps, Newman, & Howarth all out on the pickets it really made for some fantastic viewing. Its been a fair while since we've seen any better racing at Pinjar Park. These lads came to race and that's what we got, good old fashioned speedway with some dirt, plenty of passing and for those with the big kahunas some big runs around the boards. Team boss Rob Townson worked the boys well and got within few a points just prior to the end but a couple of 5-1's from the All Stars 'sealed the deal' with a 16 point victory In the support Clubman solos, Boom Boom and Glenn Gordon had some great tussles during their events with both riders putting on some very entertaining racing. Boom Boom rattled off two great wins at the end and break his long awaited drought of wins at the Ring. Newly crowned WA 250 champion Jett Muller continued his good season taking the honours but was hard pressed all night by the fast improving Daniel Clements, Mitch Gill and Jarred Ziedas. In the 125's WA#1 Matt Marson showed the way from Kobee Ziedas, the much improved Declan Knowles & Sheldon Gill all fighting it out for the minor placings. Great to see the B grade 125 kids having some fun during their heats with young Jarrad Ziedas proving to strong from Bradley Gordon and Tess McQueen.

2012 Rob Woffinden Classic, Perth Wa.

Meeting Wrap-up... The 22 year old Woffinden meant business every time he came out onto the track. In his opening heat he had to battle it out with Victorian Ryan Sedgmen for the first half of the race before he managed to power around the outside. Next up he was leading when local Kale Ballantyne came down. Woffinden had to refocus and get the job done again in the rerun, and he did. His third ride – heat 11 – was pivotal in the outcome of the meeting as he faced two other unbeaten riders – Ricky Kling (Sweden) and recently crowned WA Champion Cameron Heeps – with the experienced British star Simon Stead in the mix as well. Wuffy was able to rise to the occasion and dive underneath Kling for the lead as they raced down the back straight for the first time. He kept the momentum going during his final two heats to emerge unbeaten on 15 points. Next best – and seeded into the semi finals with Woffinden were – Ricky Kling (Sweden) 12, Ty Proctor (Victoria) 12, Ricky Wells (USA) 11, Daniel Winchester (WA) 11, Cameron Heeps (WA) 10, Simon Stead (UK) 10 and Joe Jacobs (UK) 9. Danish rider Morton Risager just missed out – being beaten on a countback with Jacobs after also scoring 9 points. Further back were Ryan Sedgmen (Victoria) 6, Douglas Scoble (WA) 5, Kale Ballantyne (WA) 3, Brady Webb (WA) 3, Ethan Ballantyne (WA) 2, Jesse Ballantyne (WA) 1, Adam Berezowski (WA) reserve 1 and the unlucky veteran Frank Smart who suffered a fall and a broken chain in his first two rides and was forced to pull out of the show with his injured leg suffered a fortnight earlier in the state title. Woffinden accounted for Wells, Stead and Heeps in the first Semi Final. The second Semi final saw Kling down Winchester with Jacobs failing to finish and Proctor falling after making a big outside challenge for the lead. So the stage was set for an exciting final. Woffinden shot out of gate 1 and was never headed, with Kling maintaining his second spot over Wells and Winchester. With the pressure off, Woffinden showed some of the emotion that he had kept a lid on all through the night. It was a great victory by the youngster who came out here aged three with his parents Rob and Sue and competed in the Junior ranks at the Bibra Lake Speedway and then the Pinjar Park oval before the family headed back to England to start Tai’s very successful Senior career. It was a top night of action – and won’t the local contingent of riders have learned a lot from the experience of racing with the professionals. The support section was the Sidecars – who also turned in on for the big crowd in attendance. Glenn O’Brien dived underneath Russell Mitchell for the lead on the last corner of the final, with Mitchell sliding off onto the infield giving second spot to Rod Brown. Congratulations to everybody involved with the Speedway Motorcycle Club of WA for making the Rob Woffinden Classic a night to remember – and now we can’t wait for next year.

2012 Wa State Solo Titles, Nov 17 Perth Wa.

It was a perfect summers night for speedway, a good sized crowd and some great on track action that made the 66th running of the WA State solo title something special. As previously mentioned it was an larger than normal program with four state titles on the bill. Young Pee wee racer Luke Killeen became WA's first ever 50cc State Champion edging out Cuan Shirley (2nd) and the hard finishing Jack McDiarmid (3rd) in the kids events. From the amount of feedback the SMCWA has received this has been a very popular choice and decision to award the kids a WA title was spot on. Young Matt Marson showed why he's highly rated with a good win in the WA 125cc title. Matt had the goods over Blake Russell (2nd), who will now move in senior ranks after the new year, a well deserved 3rd place to Kobe Ziedas and one of the most improved juniors at Pinjar Park young Declan Knowles (4th). Again some entertaing racing from the juniors with other riders such as Jack Smith, Brad Gordon & Tessa McQeen all having good nights. Another first was the WA Junior 250 Short Track title - the first state title for Intermediate class solo speedway in Australia saw 14yr old Pinjarra based racer Jett Muller go through the program undefeated in some exciting racing to take the silverware from Jaryd Ziedas (2nd) , Daniel Clemens (3rd) & newcomer Chris Bosnakis. This group of riders have certainly benefited from this new division another popular choice among the riders and parents alike. Former WA junior champion Cam Heeps added the WA 500 senior title to his CV with a narrow win over the ageless veteran Frank Smart (2nd), English resident rider Joe Jacobs (3rd) and the fast improving Kale Ballantyne (4th). Both Heeps & Smart finished on 14 points each after the heats to set up a thrilling final show down in which the youngster gated well out of one to hold out Smart for the four lap journey. Local star Dan Winchester failed to make the final after a earlier heat win over Heeps. Other riders that had good nights but unlucky in the end were Victorian's Ryan Sedgmen & Bob Stoneham, Perth based Brady Webb, Ethan Ballantyne & Doug Scoble who were all amongst the points earlier in the night. Our best wishes to Sean Phillips who suffered a broken collar bone during the heats after a heavy fall, from everyone at the SMCWA we wish you a speedy recovery Sean. John Lowe & long time passenger Andy Gajek dominated the sidecar events with another classy display at Pinjar Park.

2012 Rob Woffinden Classic, Perth Wa.

2012 Rob Woffinden Classic - Update. Swedish international Ricky Kling returns to Perth for his 3rd consecutive Rob Woffinden Classic. Ricky was always keen to return to Perth in 2012 and with his commitments in the Elite League with the famous Poole Pirates in England now complete he's booked in for the December 1st blue ribbon event. A bonus for the Perth fans with Kling also being available for another 3 meetings this summer at Pinjar Park. Very smooth, very fast and always gives it a ''Red Hot Go'' Ricky once again will be in the mix come the finals in a fortnights time. One of the easiest going riders around, he loves the Perth lifestyle and its always a pleasure we welcome Ricky back to WA. For those on terraces at the inaugural 2010 event they will long remember Ricky's exciting tussle with the ''Wild Thing'' Ty Proctor in the now famous heat 16. Both Kling and Proctor wound up the horsepower around the tiny ''Pinjar Ring'' and after 3 re-starts both riders were neck & neck coming off turn 4 on the final lap of the 3rd re-run with Proctor taking the flag by a bee's...it was the race of the night and gave the Pinjar fans long lasting memories of Ricky Kling.
