SWINDON ROBINS speedway team begin their final season at the Abbey Stadium in March as a new era dawns in the sport as a whole, with live daily streaming of race meetings.

The building of the new venue for both speedway and greyhound racing at Blunsdon has suddenly come off the back burner with the diggers due to move in this week.

Meanwhile, fans will soon be able to watch and bet on their favourite sport as speedway begins to shed its shabby mid-20th century image and drags itself into the digital age.

Long-time benefactors of speedway, Sky Sports, recently signed a new five-year deal to televise a minimum of 25 meetings a year, starting with the Elite League Riders Championship from Coventry at the end of March.

But awareness of speedway is set to be expanded both domestically and globally thanks to a partnership between the leading dedicated horse racing channel At The Races and Go Speed International.

GSI, founded and run by former Swindon Robins co-owner Terry Russell, owns the exclusive media rights to British speedway.

Sport Mediastream, a new in-house division of At The Races, will supply the technology to beam an audio/visual service of live and archive speedway races and data six days a week to fans via PCs, mobiles and tablets.

The 4G technology will be trialled at Swindons greyhound meeting this Saturday by At The Races.

Swindon Robins, Elite League champions in 2012 and one of the more successful clubs in the division, were not immune from the financially precarious nature of the sport and at one point last season their riders threatened not to race over non-payment of fees.

Russell insists that all Elite (10) and Premier (13) league clubs will benefit eventually from the new revenue stream although at the moment, he says no money is guaranteed.

Russell told the Standard: I have been working hard on this project with At The Races, who are partly-owned by Sky, for more than a year.

In the first season it will be Bet To Watch'. Speedway fans will need to place a bet in order to gain access to the live streaming of races they are interested in.

But in 2015 we could see speedway action live every night in betting shops and there are 10,000 of those around the country.

Russell envisages the shows being up and running when the two leagues begin at the end of March. With almost 650 fixtures to choose from, in addition to those covered by Sky, there should be regular opportunities for Swindons speedway fans to watch and punt on their heroes. One meeting a night will be featured.

As the only Elite League fixture on Thursday, April 3, Swindons opening clash of 2014 with Coventry looks a prime candidate for At The Races coverage.

The line-ups of teams are known two days in advance which gives the bookies ample time to set up their odds, and the results will be supplied by the Press Association, said Russell.

I cant say betting is something that interests me personally. I can spend a week in Las Vegas without betting a dollar.

But this is a great opportunity for speedway to monetise and raise its profile. It should prove a huge boost to awareness of the sport."

Matthew Imi, chief executive of At The Races, said: "There is a lot of depth to the sport (speedway), performance data, tactics and scoring systems that we think all serve to make it an exciting prospect as a betting product.

"Through our Sport Mediastream division we look forward to developing this and other opportunities directly with our many bookmaker partners."

Meanwhile, a Robins insider told the Standard that work was about to get under way on the new stadium development at Blunsdon.

This is the last season of racing at the Abbey Stadium, revealed the source. The Robins will have a new home for the 2015 season.

The first job will be to relocate the away team pits because that structure is due to be pulled down to allow the new access road to be built to the new stadium, which will be adjacent to the Motorola site.

  2. From Official Facebook Page

Following recent events, the club wish to inform supporters that a meeting of directors was held on Friday to discuss the long term future of the club.

After his resignation as a promoter last week, Chris Luty has reluctantly decided to sever all ties with the club entirely and resign as a director with immediate effect.

His decision is made in the best interest of the Brummies due to his own heavy commitments elsewhere.

Various options were discussed going forward and it was finally decided that Alan Phillips would continue his role as owner and promoter with the able support of Graham Drury, who will take over the day-to-day running of the team.

Graham will be tasked with the aim of bringing further success in the coming season.

The club would like to put on record their gratitude to BCTG for their incredible financial support and the six figure investment provided by them over the last two years which has contributed greatly to recent successes.

Without their support the historic achievements of last season could not have been possible.

We are therefore pleased to announce that BCTG will continue as a club sponsor in 2014 together with many other sponsors.

The club wish to acknowledge the tremendous support from its fans and sponsors and also the supporters club, all of which without the club would fail to exist.

The club would also like to take this opportunity to place on record its appreciation of all the tremendous work and effort put in by Joe McLaughlin over the years and we extend our sincere best wishes that he gets better soon and is back down at trackside in the coming months.

There are exciting times ahead for the Brummies. A new website is in development and details of new signings, admission and season ticket prices will be announced shortly.

This is a new era for the Brummies. There is a long term plan in place to build on the success of last season a club based on togetherness and financial stability.

The tremendous support shown by fans last season is paramount to this plan so keep the faith and get behind the Brummies in 2014.

    MEDIA RELEASE

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    BRUMMIES CONFIRM MORRIS DEPARTURE

Birmingham Brummies Speedway team have confirmed the departure of Team Manager Phil Morris from Perry Barr.

Morris emailed Brummies co-owners Chris Luty and Alan Phillips late on Thursday evening submitting his resignation with immediate effect having already spoken to the press before going to print.

It comes as Morris is widely anticipated to be offered the Great Britain team managers job at the BSPA`s annual conference in Coventry this weekend.

Selco Brummies managing director Alan Phillips said: I am surprised and disappointed with this news as Phil was to be an important member of this great club going forward and is highly regarded.

Phil is a very passionate person when it comes to speedway as am I and he has been clearly disappointed by some aspects during the season but on a personal note, Phil and I get on very well.

Airing dirty washing in public however is not the way I work so I will make no further comment other than to wish Phil all the best and extend the sincere thanks and best wishes from our great supporters.

I do hope that this will not detract from the magnificent season we have just enjoyed and look forward to moving forward.

Birmingham Speedway will issue a full Press Release on the BSPA conference on Tuesday 19th November.

  4. Just to clarify, I've no gripe with Cov and believe they are just cost cutting and cutting their cloth accordingly.

I'd like to thank everyone at Coventry Speedway for all the good times over the last 8 years. Especially Mr Sandhu, Colin Pratt, Jeremy Heaver, Alun Rossiter, Mick Horton, Neil Watson, Blayne Scroggins and Laurence Rogers.

Me and Rich have made a lot of great friends with the Bees and will miss Friday nights there. I've thoroughly enjoyed doing the jingles/music and then the Centre Green this year with the Storm although I'd always fancied doing an Elite League Match but that hasn't happened.

I've so many great memories like winning the league at Belle Vue and I wish the Bees all the best for the future and hope the good times return with a massive buzz.

Overall Sept/Oct have been pretty crappy months for me.

  5. As this issue has been the tipping point, I thought I may aswell post this here as start a new thread in general speedway.

For the past 48 hours I have found myself irritated to the point of fury about Speedway. I am now in a better place where there are white fluffy clouds, a smell of clean bedding and San Miguel on draft free of charge. I guarantee no more rants for the foreseeable future!

I have come to conclusion that there are some things that you just can’t fix. It’s said you can’t help someone if they don’t want to be helped and I think that definitely applies with my favourite sport.

I think creating a state of world peace would be an easier objective than putting things right in British Speedway. If someone with the sway and money of Avtar Sandhu couldn’t crack it what hope do I have?

I’ve followed speedway for 39 years and is been a major part of my life as a fan, a rider, a manager and as a presenter.

I thoroughly enjoyed being part of the BIKERfm Speedway Show for the last 12 months and getting to interview the riders who still cherish the sport and embrace the fact they get paid for doing something that they love. But even that caused me issues, although it was enjoyed by 20,000+ people week in week out. It was a particular honour hosting the show that celebrated RICO’s life reaching an audience of over 80,000 people worldwide.

I love presenting at both Birmingham and Coventry (and Stoke in the past) and trying to add a bit of entertainment value to the average fans night out with all the jingles etc plus it gives me the chance to show off and be in the limelight. I’ve also enjoyed being the Press Officer at Birmingham this season at the request of the Promotion, it’s been challenging at times but something I’m glad I accepted.

But enough is enough, it’s having a knock on effect on my home life with 2 young children in the house and the time I devote to something that quite frankly doesn’t deserve it.

There are “some” great people out there, I was proud to be part of the airfence meeting at Buxton on Sunday where I offered my services free of charge to help with their fund raising, it was just like the good old days. Great job again Dean Felton.

From now on I’m not going to let the inner workings of British Speedway affect me. I’m going to just “hopefully” continue in the roles I play, enjoying the racing, the riders I class as friends and the genuine people I have the privilege to work with.

To think a mere person with good intentions could make a difference was very naïve.

So if you see me getting frustrated in the future remind me of these 9 simple words….

DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME, YOU WON’T CHANGE A THING

  6. FROM BRUMMIES SITE

Selco Brummies Promoter Graham Drury wishes to confirm to all interested parties that Ben Barker WILL be racing for Birmingham tonight.

Barker visited hospital last night after picking up a hand injury. Drury said "I can confirm Ben has broken his little finger and will have it strapped up for tonight's meeting.

"Wild horses couldn't keep Ben from representing the Selco Brummies and we head into tonight's match full strength and raring to race".

Birmingham Speedway can confirm a big screen will be in place between the first and second bends so fans can take in the other Semi Final at Poole.
