Taciturn was the word I would use to describe Charlie, an astonishing racer in that if he gated well, he won.
Saw him smile a lot when it the company of good looking women, but he wasn't keen on autograph hunters and people who wanted a piece of him, or too much of his time.
I always felt that if you wanted to learn how to be good at speedway, you had to study Charlie's style, habits, preparation, attention to detail etc etc.
Safe to say I was a big fan, and one of those autograph hunters he would often avoid.
