    Most hated (respected) rider!!

I get your point but when Pedersen rode for the "Cheetahs" in his very first match he needlessly rode thru' Lee Richardson sending him sprawling. I have no problems riders holding their ground and putting their elbows about so to speak when in close proximation but when some riders go purposely looking for trouble I draw the line.

Barney Kennett was a tough old character!

    Most hated (respected) rider!!

    ...as did Vaclav Verner!

    Most hated (respected) rider!!

...at least it wasn't with a rake! Apparently Eric once went looking for John Louis with a track rake after an incident at Foxhall Heath and John Berry defused the potentially nasty coming together by rugby tackling him!
  5. A Norway/Denmark combined team so that Ole Olsen could take part when Norway was by far the more dominate team...how times have changed!
  6. Who could ever forget the run-off between Peter Collins (England) and Anders Michanek (Sweden) after the final finished in a draw at Wembley and Anders was excluded after Peter slid off? An incident that divided opinion then and still does for those who were around to remember it.

Defunct speedway tracks - and their resurrection

Sunderland Stadium looked to be in a decent state when I passed it a few years back now. Was never really a success as a speedway and having Nwcastle running a team I guess finding sufficient interest would be difficult but, then again, think of the rivalry it may well educe?
  8. The 1973 Daily Mirror World Tournament caught the imagination as well as the media's attention...it was a great advert for the sport back then during speedway's last "Golden Era".

Defunct speedway tracks - and their resurrection

I wish Oxford all the possible luck but personally I think that it will be fraught with problems as it lies within a built up area having lain dormant for ten plus years.

    Andre Compton...another 'Goon'.

    Most hated (respected) rider!!

Apparently he really got picked on at Plough Lane soon after he caused Kelvin Tatum's bad injury at Wolves by some of the Wimbledon riders who gave him a hard time.

Defunct speedway tracks - and their resurrection

I passed Skegness Stadium only last year when a meeting was taking place which, again, was somewhat out of town but that was a complete disaster when the sport was introduced there during the nineties.

Carl Askew "The Spear" some would say was a hard rider although I personally never saw much evidence when he rode for Oxford...perhaps in his early days as a "Brummie?"

Defunct speedway tracks - and their resurrection

Great Yarmouth's Stadium is still in place and operating and is on the outskirts of the town...perhaps a resurgence?

    Corona virus

He had made it onto the centre green at Cowley and announced that he wanted to meet me personally...a surreal moment!

    Corona virus

Always reminds me years ago when "Webbo" (whatever happened to him?) and me used to have some right 'ding dongs' on the old Oxford Speedway Forum and when we eventually met up in person we got on like a house on fire! A great bloke.

    Corona virus

Trouble is there is a lot of repetition on the forum...which I guess many of us are guilty but it can get tedious sometimes especially when some posts come across as patronising and personal in content.

The random Speedway heat thread (no spoilers)!

Thanks for that! Next time I'm on that stretch I'll look out for that.

The random Speedway heat thread (no spoilers)!

I went to Middlesborough years ago and seeing the AI flyover shown on the clip always makes me try and locate the old site (without any luck) as I use that road quite often as I head upto Sunderland and beyond.

    Wally Loak

I have a 1976 Highlights tape that I have downloaded but haven't listened to in years. Just checked...it wasn't by Wally Loak but 'Tape o' Sport'...anybody remember them?

Have this on DVD. Good old days of Screensport!

Defunct speedway tracks - and their resurrection

Remember "Buster" Chapman (recall him as a junior at Cowley) running at Oxford during Lynn's break. Bo Brhel was a revelation during that season as a "Cheetah". Should have remained at Oxford in my opinion rather than going back to King's Lynn. Sunderland had a chequered history.

    Mauger and Grand Prix system

Martin Yeates was superlative when riding for Oxford in 1977 but struggled when he missed the gate which wasn't very often!

    Mauger and Grand Prix system

Personally I think that it was more calculated Sid. The Belle Vue incident appeared to be more heat of the moment stuff...just my opinion.

    ARTHUR FORREST

It's a while since I've seen the DVD but I enjoyed the interviews with Eric Boocock who has a very dry sense of humour!
