1972 was my 1st season Mauger was a God.The Belle vue team of that year was I m o the best I have seen to date only lost 2 and drew 1 away all season. What an introduction to the sport I was hooked then and still am today.45 season later and in my mind 1972 has never been bettered the memories of that season will be with me for the rest of my life.

I would say the Vue 72 side just had the edge on the Cradley 83 side both great sides. It just makes you wonder if the late great Dent Oliver had not have passed on how much more silverwear would the Vue have won.He produced a conveyor belt of talent for his club over a period.

Hans must be top, in 85 or 86, when he scored that remarkable 12.00 average away from home. When you rode against Oxford in those days, it was as much about whether or not anyone could beat Hans as it was against actually winning.

I think Jimmy Nilsen beat him a few times if memory serves me correct. Plus, of course, Carl Blackbird!

I can remember Blackbird beating him Knudsen and Erik both had good head to head records against Hans also Doncaster, Nilsen ,S.Moran P.Thorp,  beat him.But as you said for a couple of seasons in the league he hardly dropped a point unbelievable and in my view actually helped the ex robin Per Sorensen and Martin Dugard  become  better riders NEILSEN 1986 figure 11.57.??

Going back to 1947.....Vic Duggan won 85 out of 96 races in the National League plus nine second places, recording an average of 11.46. He also won 23 out of 24 races in the London Cup and National Trophy. 12 wins out of 18 in Test matches, scoring a paid 47 out a possible 54. He won the London Riders' Championship with a 15 point maximum. This latter was the climax to a five week period to the end of May when he scored 254 out of a possible 261. This period was followed by winning 55 races out of 59 in June. He also took the Match Race title from the Match Race king, Jack Parker (he of Parker's Pension), successfully defended it against Bill Kitchen before relinquishing it unbeaten. In addition to all of this, he qualified for the British Riders' Championship final with a maximum 60 out of 60 points.

It was an incredible year, marred sadly only by his failure to win the British Riders' Championship, falling in his fourth ride and not taking part in his fifth.

Great post interesting reading, does Duggan often get forgotten norbold? going back to Ivan does that 11.74 average still stand ? i thought someone said it was changed in later years because of a tape exclusion. If so would HANS have the top figure.? Mauger again his 1973/77 spell at Exeter was terrific posting two  averages. well over 11 and his lowest average was only 10.50!!!

Was that the year he went about 2 months unbeaten until he got 5-1'd at Kings Lynn by I think Betts and Featherby?

1969  King's Lynn Red flag          Simmons/Featherby got a 5/1 against Ivan and believe it not 1970  at Wimbledon Hedge/Tebby            Moore/ Maidment got two consecutive 5.1 s against Ivan in heats  1 and 5.

    Totally agree Sid!

1972 was my first year and Ivan stood above all others...although Ole Olsen may lay a claim...and was the rider others tried to emulate and largely failed. A great rider (the best of all time in my view) and although not the most popular amongst fans what has become known in recent years he was well liked by his opponents (except a few no doubt) and together with Raye were thoroughly nice people. It's a shame that Ivan's illness has robbed him of his memory but he will never be forgotten as long as speedway exists.

God he was not always flavour of the month at Swindon Steve, one incident with Kilby comes  to mind but all fans had to sit back and admire him.He was booed but  fans stood up and realised just how good he was. I  can always remember someone asking Mike Tyson was   he hurt when he was booed badly  at the Holyfield 1 fight he answered  no i take it all as a compliment i believe Ivan felt the same he shrived on pressure.

  6. Being out of season i have just finished filling out most of Belle Vue's 1972 fixtures. Ivan  Mauger his stats are unreal the programmes i have ( maybe a few missing..?) In  home and away and individual meeting's he posted 19  - full maximums and plus 4  -   paid maximums.  In that 23  he won the Northern riders Championship, The Derek Warbuton trophy      scored a 15 max in the Australia v New Zealand.  International and     -  A 15 max in a WC round.    :    N.Boocock 2). - E.Boocock 1) - Olsen2).  -    Persson 1) - Moore 1) - T. Johansson2) -  Kilby 1) - Humphrey's 1) -     B.Jansson 2)  -  Nordin 1 ) Thomas 1 ) they  were the only riders to beat him on merit in amongst my programmes.   Also he had 21 other rides scoring  45 points out of a possible 63  having lost 18 points through engine failures  a brilliant season. What astounds me was i always thought 1968/71 was by far his real peak years but how wrong i was a total legend. The greatest.!!!

  7. My take on Chris is that 99 per cent of us do not know what problems Chris has had to deal with over the last few years. For me he has been a great servant to speedway and this year hopefully people will wipe his slate clean and give him another chance. The talent the guy has is unreal and he now is back at his home  Poole that he feels most comfortable at he is at the right place.I for one would love to see Chris bulldoze his way back to the top echoleon's of the sport he is capable can he do it ? we shall see.

Sidney,   Martin Vaculik   is a class rider.  He'll be an immediate success.    I just wish he'd sign for us instead of Leicester...:D

Very impressed with his attitude seems very professional think Steady had a big input on him coming to the UK he will be a massive help for set/ups and general pep talks.I believe his home track will be a test for him but he will conquer that refreshing for him to believe that riding here will help his WC claims cant wait to see him ride.

  9. How do you think Martin Vaculik will fare  in the U.K personally i can't wait to see him ride he is a World class rider a  top eight performer for me.Really interesting reading that Martin believes conquering the technical tracks in Britain will help his quest to try to be World Champion i think he will be a big hit over here.

The problem with the top 2 teams from last season (Swindon and Wolves) is that they look weak at reserve this season.  Only time will tell if the teams that start the season are the ones to finish it.

I think Zach W will surprise Steve i think at home he will score really well hopefully the confidence will transfer to scoring more away points.

Harris Nicholls and KK are as strong as any top three elsewhere really and in Kennett and Barker they have the two strongest back up riders plus the strongest reserve in Robbo.  Think they could be the dark horses

Don' under estimate JT as he achievd that average with good scores home and.away and quite.a.few.heat 15s.

Would rate him no.weaker than Cook or Kurtz or Harris and in Sam Masters you have two riders going to be swapping and  changing as the season goes on.

Ringer for an injured rider? How did bringing in Lindback make us stronger than Hans? Really,  don’t be so ridiculous.

I think Thorssell with added responsibility could do a great job he improved greatly away from home last year .I think Thorssell, Fricke,Jack Holder will all do great jobs and improve Thorssell certainly has learned his trade the hard way when in front mighty fast and hard to peg back.

Yes, Sid, a great rider. I remember when he came to Cowley in 1974 riding for Newport and managed to smash the track record! Glad that I saw him ride at Newport (twice if I recall)...a difficult track which he graced with distinction!

We always had a load of meeting's against Newport great rivals with Crump,Street,Trigg,Tebby,Mudge etc) good crowds and Newport walloped us a few times great days.

If I recall he broke his scaphoid when attempting to replace a wheel on his car when the jack gave way.

He rode one meeting i believe Steve in 1973 before his scaphoid injury the next three years were the pinnacle of his career. He averaged over 10.5 twice and a 11.15 average 74,75,76, He had a bad injury with Martin Ashby at Sheffield in 77 but he came back and always averaged between 9 .5 and 10 points a meeting  if only he had put his Streety conversion away for the World Final 75/76 he had every chance great rider though.

Further to my earlier post I have to mention Dave Shields. Returned to Cradley for the 1981 season after 2 years away from Britain. After a slowish start to the campaign he became a key component of our Championship winning team ending with a League average of 6.12 from reserve, bringing the house down against Hull when beating Mauger and Drury? from the back.

Never returned to these shores, but a key signing to help bring that title to Cradley for the first time.

Going back before that Salty   Gordon Guasco,Geoff Curtis, both sadly killed were very good riders  Les Sharpe, Dennis Gavros,Bob Jameson,Greg Kentwell ,Paul Oneill all   very popular at Halifax.Favourites of mine later on were Ron Henderson, Rod Hunter,Stan Bear,Steve Baker,Rob Ashton  the Aussies have really unearthed some real talent at all levels over the years who i  have really enjoyed watching.

Its a bit of banter. But I am or was sitting here shaking my head yet again at such a statement. How can you say Chris is often forgotten? He was one of the best riders of his era and then didn't disappear, but stayed heavily involved in speedway up until a year or so ago.How can he be forgotten?:blink:He was probably in the speedway star more often than most riders of his era up until recently

None of us know the  full facts of the Belle Vue situation but all i know is that Chris would of certainly been involved in speedway still in some capacity.  i just hope that door is not totally closed and he will be back involved in the sport that he loves in the future.

Be fair,he is well remembered compared to his brother, whatshisname morton

As WK said on another thread nothing ever changes with you sniping away as usual  why don't you stay on the other threads. As for Dave Morton he did average 10.18 for Hackney in 1976 so he was far from being an also ran as you suggest you probably can't remember him to be honest.!!!!

  17. Phil Crump was the main Aussie for me i was lucky anough to watch him regularly  and the guy was so consistent.I first  see him ride for King's Lynn i never did see him ride for Crewe and then after that he would always pile up huge points for Newport and like at Mildura nearly unbeatable at Somerton Park.Billy Sanders also i was a huge fan of  very classy and before his devastating death had really pushed on  in career he was at that point certainly in the top eight riders in the world. A big regret was only seeing Jim Airey ride once another class act, Leigh Adams what a classy rider to have the pleasure of seeing him and for a short time the amazing Darcy Ward at the Abbey was a huge treat.Swindon have been lucky to have had some great riders ride for them over the years right up until last season with the present World Champ Doyley.

Saw Chris ride many.many times...and I have on DVD that incredible race during, I think, the 1981 World Team Cup Final (remember those?) where he passed two riders (one was Egon Muller if I recall) after being so far back from the pacemakers. A great race typical of Mort. A true legend!

A really spectacular racer who would not of been far off off the level around the unique Hyde Rd as PC his pass of Carter in the 1983 Northern Riders championship was sublime. And that was the Carter who i think was the best visiting rider to grace the Hyde Rd track Morton often gets forgotten but for his longevity and consistency a legend and also a terrific person to.

I honestly hope he performs and can achieve a 3 point average but the league is much harder than last year.

Are you for REAL is it harder really? he will achieve 3 plus easily god what planet are you on Poole don't need to worry about Shanes other riders need to step up to the plate.

  20. I just wondered how Chris Morton was getting along such a shame he is not involved in speedway i just hope speedway does not forget him.I certainly won't a great man and rider and it bugs me that he is not involved in the sport he loves i wish Chris all the luck in the future  and would love him to be able to go back to the new Belle Vue regularly.

Agreed think it will be a big year for Smiley I do like the lad very approachable and certainly very talented, really want to see him and Zach kick on this year and get up to Bewleys level as I think talent wise they aren’t really far behind

I really  think Zach/James can kick on this year before Zach's injury he was going great guns it got to the stage where i expected him to score five/sixes at home every week  a tidy little rider.Entertainment  wise Shanes is terrific value also he has real talent a big year for the lad hope he does well hope you and the family are well Shocker  see you for a pint in March.!!!!

  22. I see James at the Abbey at the back end of last season and after a slow start he really was on the pace by the end of the meeting. At home he averaged five so i believe he can better that away will be tough but his final average was about 2.90 ish??? I think  he can get that average up to 4.70  In this team he should not have to much pressure unlike say a Zak W at Swindon who will have to score like a senior reserve.

Another excellent issue. Will definitely get the sister publication to read more about Jim Airey.

However, was shocked to read in the article on Norwegians that my comments about Reidar Eide and Odd Fossengen were attributed to "Sidney the Robin" rather than myself. Can't say too much as the matter is in the hands of my legal team, but Sidney getting the credit!!!!!

Sorry  salty i owe you half a shandy gutted sorry .!,
