Er, what on earth has that got to do with anything? Kurtz rode at 1, Morris was protected with easier rides.  Swindon fans happy with Morris. Poole fans happy with Kurtz and a saving of the best part of a point.

Morris unlikely to improve his average. Kurtz likely to add a point.

    Who is the best deal?

Easier rides how many times did he ride with Doyle ?? and  he never ever  looked for his partner Morris now can move on and be a proper no 1 Kurtz i rate highly but Morris and Fricke are better riders at this moment.

Your maths might he a bit wrong there, i make it that leaves 4.19.

Pickering would be a great choice his career is on the up and I would love Fricke to push on and be a number 1 he has the ability just needs the consistency.Belle Vue,Leicester,Swindon,Poole all look to have decent sides i don't care who wins just hope we see some decent racing along the way.

Jesus christ this thread is something else.

Sundstrom was a near 8 pointer when riding in this league a few years ago, hes got better as a rider and the league has been watered down hugely.

i am no fan of Poole and to be honest most of their fans annoy the hell out of me but if they round this team off with Sundstrom and Shanes, it really does look head and shoulders above any of the rest.

Kurtz is a young improving star of the future, Holder at worst will hold his average, Josh G averaged 7 riding at number one last season and starts as a third heatleader, Sundstrom is a quality rider who can ride all tracks big or small, Woryna is a hot prospect who will surely make a mockery of his average, the other Pole is the stand out reserve in the league and Shanes is improving and has a year under his belt plus has secured more meetings for 2018.

sorry but if any other team announced this line up nearly every fan on here would be saying how good it looks.

given the rules and averages etc, it is the stand out side. Thats assuming Shanes and Sundstrom sign but it looks so good that even if they dont, they will still take some stopping.

Sundstrom was very good at his home track Peterborough to get the figure he did so he will still do well to average eight. He is talented though but Hans for me is a great team man and Poole will miss that.

I reckon he's been eating too much ice cream & has got brain freeze. My monies' on Swindon to finish 1st or 2nd in the league. Injury permitting of course as that can be a big leveller in any season.

Would not mind a little wager Robin that the Robins are unbeaten at home they look mighty strong there and if Davey can chip in with 2 happy days Ellis is the key for me a big year for him.

Looks like Shanes could be Belle Vue bound.

If i was him i would sign for Belle Vue, why wait and see what might happen and then be left without a place if Poole go a different route?

Shanes and Bewley at reserve would be a sight to behold at the NSS

Bewley,Shanes and Zach W all to make strides this year i believe Shanes could average 4.80 to 5 this year how he is not in the Poole team already is beyond me also is Sundstrom any better than Hans NO he is not.

Phil you have nothing that needs defending , like you state you need the extra revenue these days to exist every publication does really can’t see where Semion is coming from as like you say the 24 page ad is an extra that doesn’t cost the customer any more! I actually find the brochure quite good toilet material once I’ve read the actual magazine content lol Despite social media and the internet in general I still enjoy my fix of my speedway star as does my son...as you know! Keep it going more of us appreciate it than those that do not

Totally agree Shocker what is three pound  today a pint of beer ? also compare that to a 2.80 racing post and the garbage 1 pound Sunday    paper  rags. Most of the news printed in the speedway star we already know anyway as for this weeks speedway star it was worth the three pound just for the Exeter feature that is superb.

Easy to say that but I doubt anyone would have expected KK to be so pathetic.

Looking at the lineups Swindon are nowhere near strong enough to retain next season. No big improvers and no big hitting reserves. Looks like last year was a blip and its back to mediocrity for the Robins. While normal service resumed for Pirates? Looking possible.

You are so cock sure of yourself after last year you would of thought you would of taken a low profile. All the other Poole fans Ray C,  Foreverblue (ect) are all pretty grounded people  they are hopeful of course but they know it will be tough nothing in speedway is a gimme. As for your take on the Robins total rubbish the top four dont need to improve and Adam  and Zach will put a point ( minimum) on there averages i predict Zach will be very solid at home before his spleen injury he was very impressive a rider who has a big future Ellis is the key he could put 1.5 on his average.

  8. The speedway star in my opinion  is excellent value look at the prices of other sporting magazines or papers the Racing post as a example for me it should be more than 3 pound. Also the 2018 teams line up edition is a terrific read great value that certainly should be a higher price.

    Good stuff

First meeting Cradley v Swindon 1970

Second Meeting Cradley v Hackney the following week. Heathens' fans stoning Garry Middleton's Mercedes when he tried to leave early

First meeting at Perry Barr 1971

Arthur Browning's max in his first meeting for Brum in 1972

Mal Corradine riding in a plaster cast 1972

    Mick Hines in 1973

The double in 1974, Just the team, fantastic bunch, brilliant times

NNL champs in 75, sponsored walk (pub crawl) for Keith White

1978, Czech touring team at Stoke, utterly bonkers! First time I saw Zdenek Kudrna race.

1980, Zdenek joins Brum, fantastic. My ultimate sporting hero

1981 KOC final, ran Ipswich close with a rag tag and bobtail team

Last World Final at Wembley, a great occasion, even though Penhall won (joking)

    1982 Zdenek returns to Brummies.

The sheer joy of watching Jason Lyons in action

    Bad times

The debacle of Brum's debut year in GOBL 1976.

Chris Morton fencing Alan Grahame. We knew.

Losing Zdenek in 1982, a real low point both personally and for the club

Finishing at the Ladbroke in 1983

The reality of the Wheels stadium, not good. Decent racing in 85, but in 86, well........

Seeing Joey Owen seriously injured 1985

Zdenek did they used to call him Kermit? he was one exciting rider  i can remember on a cold i think it was a November? night at the Abbey 1979 the track was dodgy but he gave it everything he was great value.

I'm intrigued now! I've often wondered if I know you too, from those times, as we seem to share similar memories a lot of the time!

Winning at Swindon and Oxford was always the best thing, as we always tended to be poor relations to one or the other (or both!) over the years. Things were so much better when we had that three-way rivaly, and I used to regularly go to all three.

Oxford and Reading i did  those regularly for three or four years followed Malc Holloway so got to see PerJonsson alot and well Nielsen ( was not a fan but got to greatly admire him a real  class act.Going back to yourself maybe i am wrong Nick Morris photo with your young lad??? maybe that will ring a bell as i said  i could be wrong.

I remember a trip to The Shay. Phil Crump beat Kenny Carter twice in the match, and then won the second half. I remember Trevor being on those trips. My parents were good friends with his parents.

I think i know you but i  wont say owt as that is not right but i remember you went to alot of meetings.I was there for that Halifax match when Crumpie was awesome also remember. winning 40 38 at Reading 1980 Briggs jnr rode and there was a massive spat between Briggo snr and Steve Gresham.

    Good:

1 - My first meeting at Swindon. I had been to a meeting at Weymouth earlier in the year, which had inspired me to go again - but Swindon was another level. I can still picture it now. It seemed so much faster and more professional than the meeting at Weymouth. It was Swindon v Wolves in 1974. Martin Ashby broke the track record and beat this guy called Ole Olsen, who everyone was mocking because he only scored 7 points from 5 rides.

2 - Going to Poland in 1976 and seeing Peter Collins become World Champion.

3 - Swindon signing Andrew Silver after his brilliance at no 8 the year before.

4 - Cradley walking out at Oxford in the snow. Not sure why, but I loved that meeting!

5 - Swindon coach trips to World Finals and away meetings.

    Bad:

1 - See Steve Roberts good point no 5!

2 - The same as you, Sidney, with Petersen, Holden and Jansson. Like you, Sidney, I was at school at the time and those three had such a profound effect on me and I became a bit obsessed with all three.

3 - Reading and Oxford closing down.

4 - Going to a Swindon v Glasgow meeting after many years away, and standing on a near empty second bend and watching a dull match with a very small crowd. I couldn't believe how much the atmosphere at Swindon had changed. I do think it picked up again later, when Rosco came into the club, but that was a real shock.

5 - Watching Reading and Oxford celebrate World Champions and waiting over 40 years for Swindon to have the World Champion in their side themselves, only for Jason Doyle to win it and then get dropped before riding for th club.

I must of been on the same coaches as you as myself,Hagonshocker, did alot of meetings i think i went to Belle Vue a few times for rain offs which was gutting at the time.Trevor Claridge was on those coaches along with Ade Fisher and they were great days loved Hyde Rd and the Shay especially today is not quite the same but when you see a great race you still get a buzz..

...I must admit my heart was in my mouth awaiting the referee's decision! However my view (and it's biased of course) was that Tommy Knudsen was guilty of taking another 'square bend' as he was apt to to do and as he attempted to correct himself Hans had filled the gap. There was often tension between Nielsen and Knudsen when they met with their respective teams and both were guilty of taking each other to the fence so swings and roundabouts as far as I'm concerned.

I think Hans deserved the rub of the green in that incident as he had been very unlucky  before. That incident as in the Penhall/Carter clash for me the rule is wrong no one could be sure in either case so all four should of been back in.Knudsen was a very good rider at his best very fast as you said at Cowley i saw alot of tough encounters between the two and the top three Danes at there best were formidable.

    Another good thread Sid!

    Best memories?

    1. My very first meeting at Cowley (1972 vs. Coventry)

    2. White City winning at Wolves in 1977 thereby winning the league.

    3. Oxford vs. Ipswich (KOC Final Second Leg). Best ever meeting at Cowley during my time in my opinion.

    4. Hans Nielsen winning the World Championship in 1986 at Katowice...I was there!

    5. Oxford hammering the enemy (Swindon 'Budgies') at 'The Abbey' in 1986.

    Worse memories?

    1. Any deaths at speedway (thankfully I was never present at any meeting when a rider was killed) but they all left a profound effect on me.

    2. Travelling a great distance to be met with a postponement announcement.

    3. The demise of the second half...used to have some great second halves at Cowley during 'The Rebels' era.

    4. The closure of White City and Oxford as speedway venues.

    5. Seeing the sport decline in popularity and I can't see it being reversed.

Very interesting Steve, was Hans lucky in 86?

There are some strong looking teams being assembled,   Leicester, Swindon, Wolves,  Lakeside have all been very positive in the team building,   but to me it is Poole who have the team the rest have to beat.       However did they manage to acquire such class riders like Woryna & Sch-paniak on out dated averages is beyond me.....      It makes the team building so unfair.....             Every year, there must be more deceptions occur over averages than any other part of this sport......

Woryna who i rate comes in on a joke average yet Jacobs who could of been given a reduction is left high and dry and him being British makes it even worse.

  16. I have often  wondered what people's  Good and Bad speedway  memories were in there time following there beloved sport..Five from each here goes.                   (Good) 1.Watching Briggs for four years awesome. 2.Adams v Crump jnr clashes. 3.Michael Lee winning the world final 4.Kenny Carter qualifying from the Oxford WC semi round 5.Michael Lee destroying Carter 4.0 in the two legged golden helmet.                                      (Bad) 1.Briggs crashing out in the 1972 WF. 2.Gary Petersen.   Kevin Holden.   Tommy Jansson deaths i was at school then hard to take in.  RIP.     3.Michael Lee ban.   4.John Berry not being made supremo for British speedway.  5. Kenny Carter /Billy Sanders suicides.

How can they afford NOT to try?

When Swindon did entry for a tenner and there was a very strong crowd (maybe 50% up). The following week there was no meeting and the week after it was back to £17 and regular crowd levels.

This would suggest there is a sweet point, somewhere between £10 and £17 which would maximise revenue. £10 is too cheap (the rise in attendance didn't make up for the drop in income) however £17 seemed to put off many from returning.

    17 hours ago, MattK said:

Yes. In fact I'd suggest that the crowd might be slightly higher if it wasn't on TV, as a few armchair fans might be tempted into attending. The big difference with Cardiff though is that the meeting is almost a side attraction for the whole day (or weekend in some people's cases). Everything about attending Cardiff is an experience completely unique to anything else in the British speedway calendar.

What do you think the prices should be Matt? that odd couple of quid saving for people does make a difference at the Abbey we did have some great  gates even though the profit margins were lower. What about 15 pound entrance plus a free programme??  could that work  i do think we have to have one meeting a week two many big gaps between fixtures.

Because he isn't a lock for a team place.

If we get Sundstrom or a rider of that calibre then Shanes is in.

If we can only get a 5.5 or a 6 point rider then Shanes wont be.

Although its obviously the final 2 are Sundstrom and Shanes.

Most of your predictions never happen so i will take that with a pinch of salt and to be honest if i was James i would of tried to get fixed up elsewhere.Zach W at Swindon and Shanes both should of been certainties for a place both will improve a no brainer really. If he does not get a place it will be a utter disgrace  a rider who does not get mentioned Mark Riss a talented rider who will improve could he be an option for somebody.?

Of course there are many fans who want to see the top guys,  me included,  but we don't provide the support needed to finance their inclusions.   Your example suggesting 5 clubs,   yet only  3 teams managed to run a viable existence last year and I have heard  2 of those were in the 2nd division.

I have read all your posts, and understand your idea,   but to me we are 10yrs too late.     Something like this could have worked when the top guy rode here and a good TV  advertising and  promoting all that is good in the sport, but as with everything else we missed the boat.

We have very little left to offer these top riders,   We cannot afford them .    so we need to build a new product, staring from the bottom, and hope in years to come we will have that support to welcome back them top riders...... ....... ..   But on our terms....

I am of the same opinion as yourself,  i have said for a few years we need to plan ahead clubs need to balance the books and forget about the Sky or BT money as that will stop eventually .We need to revamp our product for me have a competitive league with the entertainment factor the major aim .The top riders are long  gone now so lets hope the likes of Bewley, Jenkins, Flint,Kemp, Edwards,Thomas,Hume (ect) can be the next stars until they move on hopefully to a higher level.I have watched the NL product so speedway can still be a great night out without the stars so we need to plan ahead and have a vision to keep our sport going for the next twenty years plus.

those combinations could be a big gamble based on last yrs crowd figures, going to be a very strong team anyway, think the last signings have to be a financial fit as much as anything

If there are two 5  pointers rather than a 8/2 rider what is the chance of there being a change in the season surely it has to be Shanes and another.?
