  1. Auty worst signing of the season on that average. I said this two months ago and I still believe it

I think you will find he is very popular with the fans and for me that is what speedway is all about. It is not all about averages you said Auty last year was the worst rider to ride at Poole all year have a look at how many he scored there at the end of the year.

  2. Steve Gresham was a frustrating rider for me a real tough man and rider. He showed in the England v Usa tests he could compete against the best but he never pushed on.In 81 the Holloway/Gresham partnership was one of the best we have ever had even got 5/1s against the Collins/Grahame partnership which took some doing.Gresh had a reputation but everyone i have spoke to said he was a really nice bloke i only met him once and i can second that.

  3. Briggo, PC, C. Morton, P. Crump (sen), M. Simmons, R. Moore, T. Woffinden, C. Lofqvist, R. Wilson, M. Ashby.

............. and for something different - my top three 'entertainers' from the old Second Division:

    Jack 'Crazy Jack' Millen.

    Tony Childs.

    Robin Adlington.

Two of those blokes Mad Jack and Childs were enterainers and tough but were great team men to.😀

  4. Exactly. And all i was doing was pointing that out.No big deal and nothing to get upset about

Point taken sorry "iris, what was your opinion of the german's Hack,Wassermann, Riss (snr who i rated highly ) .I ask you because they were not world beaters but very talented and you know the Germany history / Future scene very well.

  5. Henryk doesn't really fit into the unknown category in the title. He was in a few Individual and Team World Finals before he signed for Reading. Was really past his best by then, but is an absolute legend in Bydgoszcz. One of my friends from Bydgoszcz has Henryk as his all time favourite rider.

He was not unknown but he failed in Britain 😜god "iris just have a chat debate like everybody else is it that hard.?✌️️

  6. Scabby Abbey

Saying that Poole also looks like a worn down 1950s stadia as well, and the track last year was generally garbage ask CH.😜Without the area and Poole is a lovely place to go ,Wimbourne Rd is hardly the ritz is it.🤓

  7. Who over the years were the riders who really entertained you and stick out in your mind.A tough choice but here are my 10 choices no order.Briggs. Crump(senior). B.Thomas. C.Morton. PC. A.Smith. S.Mcconnell. N.Boocock. C.Lofqvist. Hitch.

  8. Oxford signed Helge Langli who could have made it (he did beat Ray Wilson in one memorable ride at Cowley I recall) but he picked up an injury off track and never re-appeared...more's the pity! Of course his brother, Tormod, appeared at Newport and was more than useful when he, too, was injured off track (hand-gliding accident).

Coventry signed East German Gerhard Ullenbrock on the recommendation of one Garry Middleton. Matti Olin (Finland) was also another 'Bees' capture.

Ulf Lovaas Conny Samuelsson what is your opinion of those two Steve.?

  9. It was a great place to watch speedway, so fast, as you say. Yes, in '84 both Exeter & Newcastle stepped back up to the top flight & both struggled to put teams together so Peter Oakes sought special permission to use Ivan at home only. Amazing at 45 he still posted an average over 8, having not ridden regularly for a few years.

With the greatest of respect to Malc, many better riders than he struggled at the County Ground - or used to not turn up - as you say Simmo was one who never felt happy there, but there were many others. As I may have mentioned on other threads, the track just needed to be attacked, rather than ridden & many, many riders excelled there & loved the place, even some of those not quite so accomplished.

I think Scott Autrey rode the track as well as anyone I have seen, but watching Vaclav Verner, Richard Green & mark Loram there in full flow having missed the start was awesome.

The best visiting rider I think I saw there was Phil Crump. Even when Ivan & Scott were at their peak at Exeter, he would often romp to a full house in totally untroubled fashion.

I have so many memories of a great race track over the 25 years I watched there, I could probably fill a whole series of books.

    Happy days.

I do remember in 84 for Reading Malc popping out the start in heat 8 and winning and beating Frank Andersen and another??I never went to Exeter in the 69/70/71/72 seasons but first went in 73 to see Autrey. It was such a shock to see as a young lad with the track shape and all the streets behind remember it well.I would imagine Ashby/Kilby would be up there with the best around the county ground even though both said they were not totally in love with the track.Holden (bless him was decent there) also Farrell and Maxfield were two i enjoyed watching.

  10. I loved my visits to the County ground a great day out went quite alot the season Ivan did home meetings only 84? The track was so fast scary to be honest and my favourite rider who i watched a few times there Malcolm Holloway struggled there badly.Mauger,Autrey,Crump,Adams,Loram are up there as the best that i ever saw at the Country ground was looking back over the years SIMMO missed a few meetings there over the years.?

  11. I don't know what others think but i do think alot of these foreigners at the time had poor aquipment.I can remember seeing certain riders aquipment and thinking they had just bought there bikes from a scrapyard.Jancarz,Plech,Stancl,Kasper i know a different level to those mentioned would if organised ( no permit issues)would of been forces in England. Two riders i always felt could of been decent were Anders Ericksson and Bjorj Klingberg it never quite happened for them.

  12. So all that is uncertain is in which facility you'll be watching your Speedway, the old girl affectionately known as Abbey or the promised new one supposedly in the making. Or, a combination of the two as was always planned and stated. I'll take another full season with Abbey without any issue.

I hope it is the whole season at the Abbey if the new stadium happens great. You have to say even at the very least the Communication has been very poor.

  13. You wouldn't have coped too well as a Coventry/Leicester/Belle Vue fan this winter then. Thankfully all are coming to tapes......as are Swindon. I don't think the Promotion have ever been uncertain of that unless I've missed something?

All i have heard is that work has started yet nothing really has happened??knowing when the stadium is going to be ready is uncertain is it not.??

  14. It's simply too expensive and not value for money anymore it should be priced at £10-12 max

Speedway is a ten pound sport now, people like me keep paying because we love the sport. When i see families at the speedway when you add it all up getting in buying the kids there treats god it can really be an expensive night out.Needs to be looked at for families to get discounts how many families can afford two meeting's in a week? especially if you follow the football as well.

  15. Never have chance to watch Polish speedway, not live anyway, as generally tied up Sundays.

Swedish watch on Eurosport when it's on, again, if have time.

Are you for real😜 if so it shows why you are not that clued on to the major leagues. Not your fault of course ,but really do you really expect us to believe you ??? smells like Bull...e to me.✌️️

  16.

I too am a speedway snob, however NL is far from wobblers and the standard of racing is much better than I expected.

I agree with your last sentence wholeheartedly however times being 1/2 or a second series slower is way off the mark.

You may get some of the top standard NL riders getting within 2 or 3 seconds of a standard top flight race but the speeds are no way similar.

I saw the Swindon Sprockets v Coventry NL challenge meeting last year and along with the Skunny v Somerset meeting were the best two meeting's i saw all year. Was really surprised with the level in the NL it has improved no end.
