Poole Pirates 2021
scampispeedway replied to Pirates Of Poole's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
Shadders, it was Ellesmere Port who won the National League after just returning to league action and at the end of the season they closed never to reappear again. They had paid a lot of money for Joe Owen who signed after Newcastle closed at the end of 1984 but he unfortunately crashed at the Birmingham Track taking a TS Ride and never walked again due to damaging his spine. -
Bears v Diamond's KOCF

Just had a look at the weather forecast for Redcar tomorrow and from 09.00 until 13.00 it will be light rain but dry and sunny the rest of the day. The return meeting at Newcastle on Sunday there will be light rain from 06.00 until 16.00 with an hour of heavy rain at 12.00 so it will be interesting to see if the meeting goes ahead. -
Edinburgh vs Newcastle SGB Championship 27/09/19 7.30pm

Can I add the comment about the Edinburgh track as of the other Tracks I been to over the years, I liked the racing at Armadale as you needed track craft to get around and didn't need to make the gate like most of the others. I'm actually surprised that the meeting took place as the weather in Newcastle we had a lot of rain yesterday and this covered southern Scotland as well. -
To answer the question you can be relegated from the Scottish Lowland League and you end up in the East of Scotland League Premier Division and one former Club member of this latter league was Berwick Rangers.

Berwick v Newcastle , Saturday 31 August 7pm
scampispeedway replied to George Dodds's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
I've just gone through all Berwick Home Matches using the Updates Site and in the vast majority of races the result were decided from the gate, mostly it was the home heat leader who had gated so won the race but when the opposition heat leader gated he was never passed. When we reopened in 1975 I can remember plenty of passes by the Newcastle Riders on our deeper track, they knew gating was not as important as now and so when they missed the start they could ride round the opposition by attacking round the bends and won many races from the back. -
Scorpions v Newcastle 23/08/2019 League
scampispeedway replied to ScunnyDan's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
The first race 1-5 meant the match was at the beginning closer than it should've been but the home team won as the Newcastle Team ran out of steam and failed to win enough races, only 4 here meant that the overall result was never in doubt. I used to travel the length and breadth of the country following the Diamonds knowing that at least I would see a team trying to win and they acknowledged that we bothered to go and see them riding away from Brough Park.. -
I never mentioned the Premier League at all, my posting was a general one not about the Premier League and the New National League eventually became the P.L. whilst the British League was renamed to the Elite League. The reason for my comments compared what I remembered that the meetings still went ahead if at all possible but recent weather is so much worse now over a longer period and some clubs might have problems completing all their home league meetings

I've just checked the records of the various leagues that Newcastle have been in since I started watching in 1964 , in 1965 the First Year of the British League there were 18 teams taking part, increasing to 19 the following year, when we re-opened in 1975 in the New National League there were 20 teams taking part that year. So I don't think I exaggerated too much with my memory of 21 Teams at one time in the distant past.

I remember a time when Newcastle ran every week from at least the start of April until the end of September because there were 21 teams in the league, along with 4 team qualifying meetings and K.O. cup and other friendly meetings that were needed to be run. With the number of matches home and away now being cancelled due to rain, I can see even with only 11 clubs running that some league matches may not be able to take place.

Somerset v Newcastle 07/08/19
scampispeedway replied to idh's topic in SGB Championship League Speedway
In light of Sundays result I can see only one outcome and that is a win for the Rebels because from memory it is a fast open track with passing possible if somebody doesn't gate. -
The last time I heard the "Brough" War cry was in the mid 60's but gradually the need for one died out as the Team was winning most times at home.
