This topic seems to have moved away from "we like (or don't like!) Poole, but I've been reading through it with interest.

My opinion is that although there is a certain amount of envy over Poole's lengthy success, one of the reasons why the club is unpopular is the way that some of their supporters (not all of them of course, but a vocal minority) instantly over-react to any form of criticism whether it be about their track, their management or their team manager etc.

In many ways, Poole are a great example to other clubs, and I certainly don't begrudge them their success which is obviously good for Poole fans, although I feel it isn't good for the sport overall, to have one team dominating all the competitions year after year.

Perhaps if some of the more touchy Poole fans would let the criticism ride over them, and not feel that they must reply to it, things would settle a bit?

I agree, Poole's success over many seasons & either league is largely down to Mr Ford & his ability to treat his riders like employees & not mates. I*f they are not returning the scores he would like & the team are suffering he's not slow in making a change & most of the time he makes a sound choice. Maybe if more clubs adopted a simular strategy they may find the success that Poole have had for so long

Any danger of it starting on time? So amateurish

sometimes I think the public must take the blame, It's not like the start time is different. if you were to go to Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge & arrive at 15:05 you would expect to miss the kick off. why do speedway clubs hold on for these late comers when the stadium is waiting for the start at the advertised time

  3. I have to agree to some degree, our National championship has lost a lot of it's prestige. Gone are the days when it was a stepping stone to the world finals via the overseas & inter-continental rounds, Todays champion only receives a wildcard entry for the British GP where like most wildcards they are only there to fly the federation banner & make the numbers up without troubling the score board to often.

  4. In my opinion; The home team receive a severe rollocking for failing to control their own fans. The fan will be banned by the club from home matches & by the PZM from all Polish speedway. Woffinden will also receive a rollocking & a suspended ban. Teams will only be allowed to make a parade win/loose or draw from the racing surface. There will be some settlement over the whole incident so it will not get to a hearing.

    Just my opinion

A number of suggestions for best team manager are for managers of yesteryear whereas the question posed at the introduction ask for “who are the best” not “were” or “have been” So current managers only?

If thats all we have to do then it's easy, The teams that are winning have the best managers because by doing nothing they can make no mistakes.

  6. This I assume happened at a domestic meeting in Poland.

This will be for in the first instance for the clubs involved to deal with then possibly the PZM. as it is not an FIM event then I don't believe they will be required as the national rules should be used. If the supporter is in an area he shouldn't be then possibly the club he supports may be in a tight spot. But whatever happens I can't see it affecting Tai representing team GB at the upcoming events in Poland

  7. The position of todays team manager is more for an enthusiast. There is very little that can be done to change the outcome of a meeting. as a kid I would stand with a group of pals & we would manage both sides making decisions as to what to do when in a position to use T/S or who to put in as R/R & when to use a reserve. of course if the manager differs to us then the debate continues. Todays speedway will not allow that & now all we talk about is how long the meeting is delayed or the dust & why is it so expensive.

But I think the best team manager was Allan Ham at Bradford, He had the ability to motivate an average reserve into beliving he could beat a world champion & humble enough to be able to work alongside World Champions. Each time I went to Odsal it was set up like a championship arena, It was a very intimadating on arrival but always an excellent show

Professional sportspeople should not be failing drug test given how much information they are given nowadays.

Whilst I agree that professional sportspeople need to be aware about what they are taking it is near impossible to know what goes into over the counter drugs & with different brands having slightly different make ups. In the past I have asked a pharmasist for drugs that conform with the IOF list & the reply I got was "I think these are OK"... Not exactly inspiring confidence when you get that answer from someone who should be regarded as an expert.

All that said when selected for a drug test the selected competitor will be asked to declare any & all medication they have used recently & that will include even the most innocent sounding such as birth control, paracetomol or even a covid jab

Yeah, no, for sure, so there's rain threatening, you've had 20 excellent heats of Speedway all building up to a big semi and final and then you stop for 15 minutes, bring a load of kids out to play on the centre green... that's exactly why the sport will never be anything again in this country. It should all have been about theatre but no somebody has got to put a stamp on a tyre, that if it isn't used could easily be used at the next meeting, I don't really care how it works at the moment, it needs to work better, get with it my friend, the writing is on the wall for the sport in this country, born out by the attendance today.

    I have to agree.

If this system is to be used for individual championship events where a new tyre can be used for semi-finals & finals then they should be ready mounted by the SCB/BSPL for the qualified riders to put on their bikes. either that or allow each rider two tyres at the start to use as they see fit.

The waiting time at any speedway event is whats killing British speedway

We all know there will be more to come, be it a prescription or otherwise, but at least for once there is continuity in how the situation with Plymouth (last year) & Birmingham were dealt with and that is an anomaly in itself in speedway.

As always it is the club and the fans that have been let down and I feel for both same as the situation last year. Many will forget the positive changes, new management etc and will focus on the negative. Birmingham did not deserve this when the survival of the team is in such a precarious situation. Just as the Glasgow fans have been let down having travelled down expecting to see a competitive meeting.

It's of no concern as to what has been or will be found in the sample taken. The rider refused to take a second test so is guilty by failing to comply with any/all of the process the result is he will be deemed to have provided a positive sample & should receive the maximum penalty (2 year ban) the same as Steve Boxall in the past

  11. It's worth remembering that Mr Boxall was never proved to be a drug user he simply failed to take a test & the only outcome is that is presumed to be a positive test & the maximum ban was applied.

I believe before he is allowed to hold a racing licence he should be required to take a test at his own expense with SCB/BSPL/ACU witnesses present, Should the test prove negative then he can return to racing

If you talked to riders from the 60's a lot of them struggled when the pudding basin helmets were replaced by open faced helmets that went right round the side and over the ears because they couldn't hear as well! - I still recall seeing a few riders with pudding basin helmets in the early 70;s, when did these get outlawed?

Dave Jessup rode one meeting for Mildenhall at Wimbledon in 1988 which was his final one and he was still wearing a monkey mask. I'm not sure if he ever did wear a full faced helmet, the only time may have been when he was sponsored by Briggo in the early 70's?

Ray Morton and Scott Swain are two of the last riders I remember who wore open faced helmets.

A question! - Are open faced helmets outlawed in present times or not?

If you can find an open faced helmet with the correct approval standards then yes you can use one. They are still used in trials events, but these helmets are designed for such events & not permitted in racing disciplines.

The ACU Gold sticker is no longer a recognised approval in SCB/FIM speedway events

Surprised no one is discussing his reason for not taking a drugs test ? just because he was allegedly owed money by his club ? Being angry is no excuse and a very, very poor one anyway.

Drugs tests are nothing to do with any club and every rider knows you get a ban for not taking them, even the much abused , and rightly so, Jason Garrity took all the drugs tests put infront of him and passed them , somewhat surprisingly, but he took them as have other well know drug takers within the sport, as they know the consequences.

Im not for a moment suggesting Boxhall is/was under any sort of drug/medication but not taking the test should be an automatic life time ban in my opinion as it’s the only way to stamp it out altogether and tests should be compulsory at all tracks for all riders.

The reason or reasons why he failed to take a random drug test may never be known to anyone except him. He was issued a two year ban from racing which is now time served so the same as any other he is free to return to racing. However The BSPL/SCB/ACU could insist he takes a drug test before they allow him a licence in respect of his missing test.

I quite like that though personally, knew he’d be starting in the main body of the team but believed in himself and knew he was good enough to be able to cope and beyond that so fair play imo.

I heard the story a little differently, He was led to believe that some of the meetings he guested at the end of last season in would not count towards his average which is why I suggest he made a mistake.

I was going to say the same but you beat me to it.  Possibly the most underrated rider in the class at the moment.  I wonder which Championship club will pick him up at the end of August?

I don't think he will venture into the Championship this season. He made a mistake last year & ended up on an average & had to start the season in the main team, Agreed it went well for him but he could have had a lot more rides from reserve. If he doe's the same this year & ends up saddled with a +5.00 average & unable to start at reserve, I for one will be shocked.
