How about this one: Airey, Haley, Larsson, Kitchen, Wyer, Wilson, Valentine.

    Increase In Costs

Way back when, I purchased a magazine titled Speedway '70. This quoted the then pay rates for the British League as £1/6/6 (£1.325p) per start and £2 per point. Using the Bank of England inflation calculator, their approximate current values are £17.35 per start and £26.19 per point.

Re Brian Craven - date of birth 21/03/1932, Liverpool; death recorded as Registration District: Birkenhead, 1993, April. Source: Find My Past. Hope this is of some help.

    Len Williams

Always understood that Len lived in the Leicester area, but don't know if that was so at the time of his passing. Possibly the obit in the Sheffield Star was because of his long association with the Tigers. During the 1960 season he always wore a green jersey over his leathers as well as a pair of brown leather gauntlets; the only rider that I can recall who did not wear conventional gloves.

    Len Williams

From the Sheffield Star newspaper Williams Len - Passed away on June 15, 2007, aged 86 years. Much loved dad, grandad and husband (to Winnie, now deceased). Private family funeral. Ex Sheffield, Leicester and England Speedway rider. We will all miss you. Love - Jeff, Jayne, Elliot and Oliver. One of the true Owlerton greats. I saw him only during his one season comeback in 1960 and, although no longer in his pomp, he still managed to beat most of the top PL men when they visited Sheffield. A very fine rider.

    Wal Morton

Further information on Wal. Late in the day (put it down to a senior moment - that's my excuse!) it occurred to me to check the entries for 1984 onwards on 1837on line, using Wal's date of death 21/04/1995. This provided the following details: Morton, Walter Neville; DoB: 17/01/1911; Reg Dist: Ipswich; Year; 1995; Month: April. This ties in with the birth entry for Walter N Morton at King's Norton, so I think that we have the answer.

    Wal Morton

I have done a check on 1837online.com and found the following: Walter N Morton, birth registered Jan-Feb-March quarter 1911, registration district King's Norton, Volume 6c Page 361. I checked all Walter Mortons whose births were registered between Jan-Feb-March quarter 1909 and Oct-Nov-Dec quarter 1911 and the above is the only one in the Birmingham area. Hope that this is of some help.

    Plymouth or Australia

Could there ever be any doubt about Tom Farndon?

    Plymouth or Australia

I am 90% certain that the rider second from the right is Frank Varey, while the one second from the left looks rather like Dick Case. Also, third from the right has for some reason the look of Lionel Van Praag about him, but this is more an impression rather than any certainty of identification. If any or all of these are correct then I think the location must be Australia rather than the UK, but well after 1926. I know that Frank Varey toured Australia in 1934/35, so it could be around that date.
