Change To The Grand Prix For Next Year
father jack posted a topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I dont expect this to be popular, but watching the meeting on Saturday night I noticed Scotty Nichols scrapped into the semi finals with 6 points. In theory he could have come second in the semi (2pts) and then won the final (3pts) making a total of 11 points from 7 rides. Now Trick went through the card 15pts won his semi (3pts) and could have lost in final to Scotty after scoring 20pts in 7 rides !!!! Wouldn't it be better for the points scored during the meeting to be carried forward, then add the semi final scores, with the top 4 scorers going through to the final, then the points scored the final added on so that whoever scores the most points wins the meeting. I dont expect many people to like this but I think its much fairer than the current system. -
Confirmed Wildcards Are.....
father jack replied to SCB's topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I hate this lark, lets just have qualifiers for gods sake, no politics involved . The top 8 qualify for the next season, the next seven qualify through the qualifiers + 1 wild card. Easy and above board. Maybe too easy !!!!! -

For the TV audiences not understanding the format, it should not be beyond the capabilities of Commontators to explain the format, with a suitable set of graphics. -
I'd like to see a track in Bristol, the potential support is mind boggling. But it should not be at the expense of another team, in this case it might be Somerset.
-
I think the lack of fans turning up was a case of a protest against the Promotion, not the team or the Standard of racing, I seen it as a case of Wally (a very apt name ) seeing the potential gold mine at Bristol with a ready made team ( Newport's ). Maybe he should have run Bristol at the lower level, leaving Newport alone, Bristol would have been a sucess regardless. Had another promoter taken over at Somerton Park the story might have been different, but a lot of fans were very bitter at what happened and stayed away. However justice was done when the Bulldogs were shut. I along with many Newport fans at the time never set foot in Eastville, those that did used to support the opposition , prefering to go to Swindon instead, and when he took over at Swindon I went to Reading, Oxford or Cradley, I made a point of staying away from tracks he was involved with. Sorry to sound bitter and twisted but it still annoys me to this very day.

Just looking at that photo of Broady, his style is very similar to Carl Wilkinson, ( now go on all disagree with me :

No Insult or slight intended to Broady, himself a former Newport rider. -
According to the local Newport rag Tim Stone made a contract offer to Short Track rider Marco Belli after he impressed in the Short Track meeting held at Newport on Saturday, I dont know anything about him, but apparently he is a former Italian Champion. Out of intrest does anyone know if he could do the business at Premier Leauge level ?

Not A Good Few Days For The Aussies...

None of the Aussies went well on Saturday night, and to make things worse for this fine sporting nation the humiliating defeat ( 79 all out ) in the Cricket last night, a few days they'll want to forget. -

With regard to Wednesdays match and the Ashes , I fully expect normal service to be resumed, (ie Bits Loose ) but it was nice while it lasted. -

Gp Tickets Problem Can Anyone Help ?
father jack posted a topic in Speedway Grand Prix and Speedway World Cup
I bought 1 adult and 1 child ticket for for myself and my eldest son for Saturdays meeting, unfortunately my other son has decided he wants to come as well. I tried the hot line, and they can't give me another child ticket in the same area. If someone could buy the Adult and Child ticket off me for £39.00 I'd be gratefull, then I can purchase 3 seats together on the night . If I disappoint any of the kids, my wife and my 5 year old son will not be very happy on Saturday night !!!!! -
Someone on the Newport site has done an obituary for Ray it makes intresting reading, http://www.aimoo.com/forum/postview.cfm?id...hreadID=2031679 I believe that Ray was forced to retire in 1965 beacause he'd been riding without a licence for a number of years, is this true ?

Sad news, one thing I remember about Ray, and my father is always telling me this, Ray was THE master of 'dropping' or 'laying down' his bike. In fact, I'm told he was the quickest ever at the skill.

Left Handed Rider... Does Anybody Know ?
father jack replied to father jack's topic in Years Gone By
Spoke to the 'Old Timer' on the phone today, he assures me this rider does exist, he rode from the about 1962 in the old provincal leauge untill the early 1970's He said the wierdest thing was seeing him winding on the throttle with the left hand ! -
Didn't they try this in the late 50's early 60's, wern't Briggo & Peter Craven handicaped, I remember readung Briggo being dead chuffed giving 15 yards to riders like Nigel Boocock .
-
Thanks , I remember about Eddie Glennon . Very popular manager & nice guy too .

My Dad has put some old Cine Film on to video, and it shows a couple meetings from the old Somerton Park track in 1968. One meeting is Wasps V Sheffield, I recognised all the Wasps riders, but the only Sheffield rider I could recognise was Charlie Monk. The other match is an England V USSR match. The only English riders I spotted were Jimmy Gooch and Martin Ashby. Does anyone have any details about these matches ?

Following the great success of Speedways tactical ride rule , Rugby Union has followed suit. The New rule states ' If a team is more than 15 points down at half time then any points scored by that team in the second half count double ' This now means yesterdays Wales v Scotland result should now read Scotland 41 Wales 46 .

I watch some of the vetrans races they put on at Newport, and I 'd love to see some of todays stars riding those old JAPS, I wonder if some of them could cope !
