G the Bee -'Of course, Newport is the meeting's rightful place. However, when Poole took the meeting over for a year they raised the bar, both in terms of rider quality and the numbers of riders taking part. That level has never been maintained in my opinion.'
Poole are an Elite Leauge club, Newport a Premier Leauge club I would imagine that Poole would have a bigger budget available for rider quality.

Whilst I agree 100% that there should be a memorial meeting for Streety, this is not the one. Many Austalians would want to ride in the meeting and as the NYC falls in Australian season most will be unable to compete.
-
Matt Ford couldnt wait to grave rob a few years back, I'm sure he'll run the meeting if he has to. For the good of the sport.
Carefull SCB you will upset Schovlar
-
With the financal situation a lot of people including myself could only afford one meeting a week, two is just too expensive, I'm sorry I just couldn't afford it a lot of the time.

In 1964 Newport Wasps won the Provincal Leauge KO Cup. They were unable to defend the trophy because of the formation of the British Leauge in 1965. This begs the question where is that Throphy ?
-
Just a shame that Newport appear to have chosen to use a number of other riders ahead of their own Number 8
Newport put together a winning team within the rules despite having five riders unavailable, they are in with a chance of winning the National League trophy - do you expect them to throw it away ?
When the Late Tim Stone put out weak Newport Maverick sides he was slated by everybody for fielding a team full of training school kids, now when Newport want to win they are slated by the likes of you. Theres some just like having a pop no matter what Newport do.
-
I make it 5 of the team unavailable :-
Todd Kurtz - riding for the Wasps at Kings Lynn
Tony Atkin - injured
Tim Webster - injured
Tom Young - injured
James Whyte Williams - injured.
I'd hate to have to pay Mainman's phone bill this week.

No they post on there own website ,newports has been under constuction for the last 2 months. so there only access to the public is the BSF or tanya's Site , both ignored by the management
Bill this was an important meeting for Newport Speedway, clearly the management wanted to give it every chance of going ahead. Had the rain stopped they could have had a raceable track within an hour or so.
Call off a meeting early and it clears up then the management get slammed, as happened with the late Tim Stone a few times, call it off to late the management get slammed ! Its a no win situation.

It's a great idea and Steve Mallett mentioned this to us last year. Main problem is we cannot leave until 2nd October at the soonest as the US Nationals are on October 1st so we will be in the air on Rider Cup weekend.
Thanks for the reply Steve, it's a pity the dates didn't coincide.
Maybe Newport could stage a special meeting involving the Americans based here ? A four team event perhaps, GB v Australia V Sweden V USA at PL level
-
Steve, the Ryder Cup is on in Newport at the time of the dream team tour, maybe yourself and the Newport Management could get together and arrange a meeting during the cup weekend.
Newport will be full of Americans that weekend and with a bit of publicilty and maybe liase with the Celtic Manor - advertise the meeting as an International involving the USA and the place could well get a bumper crowd.
-
Maybe with hindsight the best thing to do would have been wait until half an hour before the start of the match against Buxton then protest against Adam Allot riding in the meeting.
The sort of thing Ian Thomas or Matt Ford would do.

According to the local rag today Hornets are at full strength - both Kyle and Tim Webster are riding.

my biggest gripe is all the people standing for the welsh anthem, im not welsh so i dont!
Ever heard of good manners?
-
Could someone explain the criteria for selection for this meeting ? I find it staggering that the Newport Hornets aren't taking part, The team of Atkin, Jones, Newman, and Kurtz would be a very attractive addition.

Leigh on a side note do you know what your uncle Tony Clarke is up to now a days?As a speedway mad teenager he was one of my idols when he rode for Wembley and Wimbledon in 1971 and 1972.
Tony in fact rode for Newport Wasps in 1972. Was top scorer that season.
-
Hi Leigh, did you ride cycle speedway in the early 80's for a side in the Bristol area? I think I may have ridden against you.
-
Steve, you never answered my earlier point, I asked that if Poole had come up with the idea of a January meeting that was a gamble and a success would you still be so keen to have it shared around ?
Somehow I dont think your views would be the same would they ?
-
Rubbish. It should be passed about to another clubs to have a go. Newport might make a tidy sum out of it but so would other clubs. Stick the names of clubs that would like to run this meeting into a hat and draw out the lucky one.So for the sake of argument Steve, say Poole took a gamble on a mid-winter meeting and it was a sucess, and their idea. I take it you'd be quite happy to loose it would you ?
